hi there, i am on 5.0 beta 12a

ok ran the permissions script today.  here is an example of the new permissions (stupidly i didn't check the way they were, but here's what they are now)

-rw-rwS--- 1 nobody users  4693907165 Sep 2 13:37 the.colony.2013.720p.mkv

was surprised to see the Capital S in there (not sure what it means) as well surprised the users with an s, thought it was supposed to be user?

i definitely can't run a deep scan, can't do regular or deep.  either way just instantly says library scan complete... even though i now have literally no files showing in plex!

also now noticing that after the fresh install, i can only access plex for an hour or two... the unraid settings page says plex is running but i don't think it is because i can't access the plex web interface

aargh!

i presume you've rebooted unraid at some point in all this.... When you reinstalled, did you install to a new directory? In .../Plex/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/ delete all the .bundle files. Have you run a parity check recently? Do you use any other plugins?

If it was me and as you've already done a lot of irepariable damage, i would start again....download latest plex, reboot your server, set a new installation path and add a new section....then is that works, re-add your old sections.

EDIT** Also worth checking...is it on your network correctly? cable plugged in, run command: ifconfig eth0

Sorry for not going through 84 pages of info... but what i don't understand is if i install this, will plex have it's own webpage for it's settings somewhere? If so, where? The only screenshots i find so far are the unraid plugin pages/settings. If i install this plugin, how is plex configured? How can i set things like scanfolders, transcoding settings, subtitles, etc? Please don't tell me this is all command line?

You will see something like this:

Status: RUNNING with version: v0.9.8.5.165-c301c50  on the (your server_name)/Settings/plexmediaserver

click on RUNNING and it will launch Plexmediaserver on you web browser.

Ah, ok... found screenshots from the plex interface on the plex website. Nice :)

Now transcoding is a cpu intensive application, what are the recommended specs for an unraid system running plex regarding cpu and memory? I have an Intel i3 @ 2.6Ghz, with 4GB of memory, but i also run some other plugins (see signature). 99% of my media consists of high quality, high bitrate HD material. Is my i3 up for it?

The best alternative is to avoid transcoding altogether. Easiest is to use client which support local/direct streaming with all media formats. To my understanding Plex Media Center and Plex Home Theater are the only ones like this, all the other client have limited list of supported media formats. Other way to avoid transcoding is to use only those media formats which are directly supported by the clients. Some have created two versions of the media files; one for big screen home theater and one for mobile use. Unfortunately the popular MKV-container is not well supported for local/direct streaming.

See here for more info:

http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/FAQ:_Plex_Media_Server_and_NAS

Here is a list of direct play formats for Windows 8 client (as an example, couldn't find similar list for other clients):

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/62229-direct-play-formats/

You'll probably manage to run 1-1,5 1080p and 2-3 720p transcoding sessions with your current CPU.

hate to hijack, but i'm making no progress on getting this working!

since i last posted, have tried several reinstalls, several different versions (including some reported to work by people with similar problems), server reboots etc.  there are warnings and errors in my plex logs but i'm not sure what they mean and if they are related to my problem...here are my latest logs, any one see anything obvious?

Just to recap, i am totally unable to add any media to plex... when i hit regular (or deep) scan it just instantly says 'library scan complete' but no media is added.  i am able to add media folders, however the scan instantly completes and plex shows no media files.  these are all files named correctly and had been added and working previously before this problem.  i've had a working setup for over a year, but 3 weeks ago new files stopped being added, and after trying a few settings, i deleted the library and fully reinstalled.  since then i have not been able to add a single media file!  have tried probably 6 different PMS versions including very latest, the last one working for me, versions reported working for others, but now can't add a thing!

Can you also post a screenshot of your library section configuration (with advanced settings visible).

hi henris thanks for helping me out!

there is no scanner log!  in the past i've had one, but i think because of the fresh install, and the fact that i haven't been able to successfully scan, no scan log has been created!  attached is EVERYTHING in the log folder.  note also that i had installed earlier today and just reinstalled the most current version just a few minutes so these are the brand new logs.  problem persists!

also here's the library screenshot

Ah my bad, I meant the settings of the movie library section. Here is an example, however this is from my windows PMS accessing unRAID shares so the path names are not valid for unRAID internal use:

Plex_-_Movie_Section_settings.png?6132

no prob!  so here is what my library looks like (normally have 5 or 6 sources however since nothings working i just add one to test)

here's another example

Is "/mnt/user/Media/Media/TV" the correct path (case sensitive)? So that you have on data disk a root folder called Media and then subfolder Media and then subfolder TV?

I'm asking this because I saw similar behaviour (scanner not doing anything) when I had a typo in one of my folder names and also it would seem odd to have such Media/Media structure.  If that is a valid path then it should also work from windows with "\\tower\Media\Media\TV" or from unRAID shell with above path (eg. "ls /mnt/user/Media/Media/TV").

You can also try using disk share eg. "/mnt/disk1/Media/Media/TV". This is just for testing, eventually you want to use user shares.

If these don't help, then we need to take a look on how you installed Plex.

yes i think path is correct... i have a share called Media, then a folder inside called Media, then two folders in that called Movies, and TV.  i acknowledge its a bit odd to have a folder with the same name inside of a share with that name, but i had to set it up that way to work with my popcorn hour (which i rarely use anymore).  i copied and pasted the path right into a browser and all my shows showed up listed

but there is something interesting here... my very current plex lets me add folders and there's a drop down menu for choosing boot, cache, user, or disk 1-18... the only way i can see my actual movie and tv folders is if i choose user first... if i choose 'disk' then i can see a folder called media on each, but they don't show with anything in it... maybe that's related?

so tried to do your disk share test but can't?  hope i'm explaining this right!

So if you paste "\\tower\Media\Media\TV" into a Windows explorer address bar, it shows all your TV-show top level folders? If you write just "\\tower" it should show you a list of: disk1, disk2,..., diskN, flash, Media (and any other user shares you might have). Do you have your TV-shows spread among all disks or are they located only on some of them? When you double-click such a disk in explorer does it show a Media folder? When you browse further, do you see Media, TV and the actual TV-show folders?

For the actual install, I think these are the currently best and simplest instructions: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/66930-helpful-unraid-links/

I just recently installed one server and Plex into it following this guide (seconds post in the thread) and I performed the following steps:

1. Enabled user shares in unRAID web gui (Settings / Share settings)

2. Created a cache-only share called apps (Shares / Add share)

3. Copied  PlexMediaServer-*-unRAID.txz into extra-folder on flash (downloaded from http://www.plexapp.com/getplex/)

4. Telnetted into unRAID using Putty and ran "installpkg /boot/extra/PlexMediaServer-*-unRAID.txz" (OR you could reboot unRAID through web gui)

5. Copied plexupdater to config/plugins folder on flash (downloaded from http://www.plexapp.com/getplex/)

6. Ran " installplg /boot/config/plugins/plexUpdater.plg" in the existing telnet session (OR you could reboot unRAID through web gui)

7. Created "/mnt/cache/apps/plex" and "mnt/cache/apps/plex/temp" folders using mkdir in telnet session (OR you can do this using Windows explorer). I think this step is not necessary and Plex will auto create the folders but better safe than sorry.

8. Changed the Plex library directory in unRAID web gui to "/mnt/cache/apps/plex"

9. Changed the Plex temp directory in unRAID web gui to "mnt/cache/apps/plex/temp"

And that should do it. How did you install Plex?

thanks for sticking with me on this, i really appreciate it!

hmmm well cutting and pasting the path for tv works exactly as you said... when i paste in a browser or windows explorer (copied exactly from your post) it shows a list of all my tv shows, or in windows explorer, folders of my tv shows

entering \\tower  in windows explorer also shows all my shares (but not my disks).  Not sure if it matters but entering \\tower in a browser doesn't work, doesn't show anything, just hangs.

i had all my disks set to 'Yes hidden' in disk settings in unraid... however for testing i just unhid one, and then i can defintiely see it through \\tower, can click through see my media, etc.  tried adding just the disk to plex, but still got the same old error 'library refresh completed' instantly.  note that these shares have been hidden for a year but working fine with plex (although i had plex set to use the shares and subfolders, not the disks)

all my media is basically spread across 18 disks, so there's a bit of everything everywhere!

as for install, i have done it pretty much exactly the way you said, but i've also just dropped the pms package into the extra folder and rebooted the server, then changed the paths through the unraid interface

however, i've never created the folders first, and then changed the paths as you suggest... maybe i should try that?  delete everything and try exactly what you said?  maybe i'll try tonight however i'm really thinking that the only difference would be creating the plex and temp folders from my windows machine...

i am pretty sure my paths are right... i'm wondering if either plex, or my files, are in conflict with respect to permissions?  i don't want to jump to conclusions because i think you're being thorough!  so i'll do whatever you suggest!

Hi grither, sorry for the belated reply.....it's day 3 of my new baby :) , BUT i am determined to get this working for you!

Your network output looks fine, and as you've already said SB etc are working fine it doesn't look to be this problem. You do not need to create the plex folders manually as they are created as part of the install process.

The file permission of "-rw-rwS---", is that all the files? Can you "chmod 777 filename" (without quotes) and see if the scanner picks it up. If so it's a permissions thing.

Also, there is a known issue with plex if you are installing it to a mnt/user/... location. Ideally it needs to be a cache drive, OR define the disk...so either /mnt/cache/apps/plex or mnt/disk1/apps/plex. Do you have a screenshot of your plex install page in unraid webgui?

Probably worth deleting all the scanner bundles found in plex/application support/plex media server/plug-ins

The last thing that i can think of is to create a new share just for testing and put one file in it. Say a movie, then make sure it has 777 permissions and add that as a movie selection within plex. With  screenshot of you plex install locations webpage, hopefully we can go from there.

If i recall correctly you're still on unRAID RC...Another suggestion would be to install 5 final.

good luck!

Just did an installation on a new build following the steps except for creating the plex directories in advance and it worked nicely. So that should not be the problem. I did use /mnt/cache/apps/plex/library as the library path since it's just more logical to me.

I did take a closer look on the logs and compared to mine. I have only a single movie placed on disk1/movies. Below is the comparison of the logs which both contain a single library section update (saving of changed settings) and one or multiple library refreshes. Your settings indicate TV-shows but the folder indicate 3d-movies. Might be just a test naming issue but I would definitely recommend always to use Movies for initial testing, they have a much simpler scanner logic. Put a single mkv movie file into to the test folder and then point the library to use that.

Also below is a scanner log for an empty scan (no media files in target dir) which you should also have. It is very odd that it is not generated. It seems like a permissions issue. Have you completely removed and re-created the /mnt/cache/apps directory structure when you re-installed? I just finished this build and all I did was just create apps share through unRAID web gui.

Hi ockingshay, and congratulations!  I can’t believe that you’re willing to help me out while dealing with a newborn at home… having gone through that a couple of times, I know that sleep and other things tend to take priority over helping out complete strangers!  It doesn’t seem to long ago that I had my first, and she just recently turned seven… (I gave her an ipad for her seventh birthday, with plex installed of course… so she’s a bit bummed about my plex problems, but still thrilled to have an ipad)

The file permission of -rw-rwS--- seemed to only apply to files created after a certain date… the vast majority of my files don’t have the ‘S’…  I’ll find a file and try to change it as you said (will have to do tonight!) but I guess even my ‘normal’ files can’t be added

In terms of installation directory, my install looks very close to yours.. .  I have a separate share called ‘appdata’ which is cache only and both my plex folder and tmp folder are on it…again I’ll post a screen shot tonight.

When you say delete all scanner bundles, will those be recreated by plex, or do I need to reinstall plex?

I’ll try to create a brand new share, check its permissions, put one movie in it, and try to add it (will have to do that tonight, can’t get fired AND have a non-working plex, that would be too much to bear!)

I have considered upgrading unraid to 5.0 final but given the probs I’m having now, I’m nervous about putting my whole setup at risk!

Thanks so much for your continued help, I’ll post back tonight after trying some fo the suggestions

Thanks buddy, it's all a bit of a blur at the moment.

The upgrade to 5 final fixes the known endpoint issue that hindered plex users under certain circumstances, but as you are using a cache disk it shouldn't affect it.

The bundles are reinstalled automatically when plex runs.

See how you get on tonight, I'm still leaning towards permissions, so hopefully chmod on the test file will prove it.

yeah i felt a bit dumb posting that pic showing 3d movies, with tv folder... that was definitely just for testing. i normally test with movies and movies folder, tv and tv folder etc.  in fact i thought i edited the pic to be correct but maybe not!

on the couple of the fresh installs i've done, i've first gone to the plex folder and deleted all files.  i did get errors trying that as it was saying that i didn't have permission to delete certain files... but i did logon through putty and change permissions on the plex folder and all subfolders and files, so that i could delete all the files within.  seemed to work okay.

as for the scanner.log, i agree its strange, i just assumed it was due to the library not being successfully scanned, but i guess you've proved that wrong!  although i guess you were able to successfully scan your empty library, but maybe mine doesn't even get that far ie a problem is encountered before plex can even tell the library is empty?

i'm now wondering if there is something wrong with my cache only share... called 'appdata'.  maybe i should delete that share and create a brand new one, and try a fresh install?

maybe before i do that i should just delete my appdata cache share? (although it wouldn't be hard as the share for 'appdata' is used only for plex, i have all my other apps running on a share called 'apps')

maybe i'll delete my appdata share, make a new share with different name, reinstall plex using new share.  from there, i can add folder and try.  also will try to add a new folder, with only one movie file, and will check or change its permissions to 777 prior to trying to add.

i think that will address what both you and ockingshay might be thinking!

Will post back!

ok sorry for the above rambling post.  here is what i think i will attempt tonight:  probably can't do this for a few hours so if anyone has any modifications i'll check back before i execute the following plan:

tonight's plex plan

create new folder on disk1 called singlemovie, add one movie

run chmod 777 permissions on folder singlemovie and movie file

check to ensure permissions are at 777

try adding new singlemovie folder to plex

    see if scan works

if that works post back to forum (maybe need to run chmod on entire library?)

if that doesn't work

check that there's nothing but plex on appdata share

remove plex folder and files, and delete appdata share

create new share, call share something else like plexapp

ensure latest plex version is in extra folder

    reboot

go to plex settings, make sure paths are to new share 'plexapp'

reboot (not sure if this second reboot is necessary, but from testing my system seems to want this)

if plex successfully launches, try to add a single movie folder (I have one called SD movies which is small, see if i still get notice 'library scan complete' or see if it works)

Looks good to me

Another thing worth checking of you haven't already is the owner of the Plex application data folder.

Telnet into your machine and run the following (you might need to update the path for your specific install location):

ls -al /mnt/cache/appdata

It will return something like (only interested in the Plex folder):

Root account as owner:
drwxr-xr-x 4 root      root 112 2013-09-04 16:58 Plex/

Or, Plex account as owner:
drwxr-xr-x 4 unraid-plex      users 112 2013-09-04 16:58 Plex/

If root account is the owner you should change it to the Plex account.

Stop Plex running from the WebGui settings/plugin page.

Then run the following command (again, updating the path for your specific install location):

chown -R unraid-plex:users /mnt/cache/appdata/Plex
