September 19, 201114 yr I'm confused on this sticky post. Why have this topic if the current stable release doesn't even support 3TB drives? This really throws people a curve ball who don't know that. I'm a nice person and I'm venting of course and have to just get all this off my mind. I'm a little upset of the speed at which unraid is updated/released. I know I've written this information here previously and I guess every few weeks I get upset because I need to update/upgrade my server and since I'm stuck using unraid right now I can't do that. If I had the money I would buy a Synology box but they are very expensive. Sorry for sounding like a bad guy but I just want to see some movement on the progress.
September 19, 201114 yr live a little on the dark side move to 5b12 upgrading beta's keeps ya busy and you will not have to vent

Sorry for sounding like a bad guy but I just want to see some movement on the progress. your constant whining and hijacking of threads claiming that 5b is not safe to use is getting somewhat annoying. we would all like to see a final release of 5. If you would like to help then install 5b and then post full syslogs if you experience problems. Your current approach is not helping the situation any.

I'm not sure you grasp just how difficult it is to test and release and app/OS. There are multiple things on teh board for 5.0 and they are being implemented. It may work perfectly well for some, but not at all for others. There is only so much testing a person can do on there test systems to find bugs and bring outlying cases to attention. I don't need 3TB support on my production or test servers for right now. I am still running with some 500GB drives!! I understand your want for 3TB drive support but it WILL NOT be coming to 4.7, sorry. 5.0 is the way forward and short of the 4.7.1 release that is coming to address a bug that will probably be the end of the line for 4.7.X series. As someone who has released a number of unMenu packages (a god awful lot now that I sit and look at it) I know what it can be like to try and support it all. That is the most tiresome part of it all, honestly. I enjoy creating the packages and releasing them to the community. The hardest part is finding the time to a) support and fix current packages and b) create new ones. Finding the free time to work on them when you have a full time job, and house under reno, among other things gets to be an interesting balancing act. unMenu packages for me always come last... just a fact. I have to cut and split wood for my fireplace this winter before I even contemplate working on/fixing/refining an unMenu package I am working on. So the above probably turned into a rant of my own a little bit... The point is that you need to understand just how much work has to go into creating unRAID and how much work it takes to get everything working in a coherent manner.
September 19, 201114 yr This thread has no purpose but to initiate a complaint about something that has already been developed and is in the pipe for a finalized version. I vote for deleting this thread to prevent confusion amongst less informed users.
September 19, 201114 yr i second that vote. on a side note, i have been running the 5.xx betas since day one, and other than a permission problem i have not had or seen anything i would consider "dangerous to my data" i currently have (3) 3TB drives in my system (2) Hitachi (1) Western Digital all have passed preclear and are currently in the system

Basically, that is what happens in the 5.0 series... Yes, 5.X also changes the GUI, but almost all the issues in 5.X are with the new kernel (and its affiliated disk and network drivers), not the GUI. So... you'll probably never see 3TB drive support in the 4.X series.
September 19, 201114 yr Also for a point of reference take a look at the media player device market- few have 3TB support. The oem nas providers were closer from the start. Also remember that they have tech specialists that number in the hundreds. Upgrading the kernel can mean rewriting much of the base code.
September 19, 201114 yr Already discussed ad-nauseum in other threads. Lets stop flogging this dead horse.

Agreed - Tom has a his work cut out for him with all the changes in V5. I do not envy him. I do wish he posted in the beta forum a bit more though - just to give his current plans. He doesn't owe it to us, but it might calm some people down. At work one of the things I am always doing, is coaching others to keep their project managers or other stakeholders informed, after questions are asked of them. Even if you're working on the answer for days or weeks, the absence of information makes the stakeholder think you're ignoring them. I think most of us know Tom is working on this - but damn I'm curious

I took a peek at your prior posts and there has been allot of posts regarding the 3tb support. As Joe mentions, I doubt 4.7 will have 3tb support. 5.x will. If you have slots available you can buy a 3tb and use hdparm to set the LBA size to 2TB for now. Then later on move it to a new 3TB drive. of course it could be a bit of leapfrogging as you move 2TB of data to a 3TB drive later. then reconfigure the older diminished 2TB back to 3TB, but at least you could grow and not concern yourself with buying older technology.
