While still containerized, this new approach acts as a "closed" system, removing user control over container networking (e.g., changing ports) to ensure stability, easier updates, and better integration with UniFi’s ecosystem.even the os installer is now a specilaed script for VM use.

Still, there is the github project which tries to adopt the unifi server os in docker/kubernetes. Why this should not be allowed? Edited May 6May 6 by fir3drag0n

Also, I'm curious, has anyone that spun up a VM of the UniFi OS care to share their experience with it?

But then again, I'm only using it for my access points and my switch, so I can't comment on other functionality. It was easy to install, just followed @PeteAsking directions earlier in the thread.

Not sure how I missed that discussion back in early March. I follow this thread pretty religiously. But alas, i did. Thank you for getting me there.

May 10May 10 I ended up putting it on another Ubuntu headless server that wasn't doing much of anything. All went well. You have to make sure to update the UniFi Network application before restoring from backup. Otherwise the backup file will be incompatible.

Unifi are sending cease and desist anyway now so its not tenable to continue in any way.

May 22May 22 I've been running 9.5.21 (thank you PeteAsking!), I spun up a new VM with debian and deployed the OS server, but I can't get the backup to take in the new Unifi OS. Network application is newest version (10. somethign) and the backups (multiple, some settings only, some with 30, 60 and 90 days retention) as well as site exports. Nothing seems to stick. Any advice?

May 22May 22 I wish! Nothing, spins around for a bit, then goes back to the 'drop your backup file here or browse' screen.

May 29May 29 Thanks PeteAsking and fat, I tried in edge as well as a different machine. I think the install was just bad (I must have screwed something up). I rebuilt the vm with ubuntu 26.04 server and ran the scripts, and the backup restored without any problems.
June 22Jun 22 I'm still on the older 11notes/unifi:9.5.21-unraid docker version. Will a backup from this version work with the new Unifi OS Server in a VM? I'm so nervous about messing with the Unifi Controller after nightmares of losing access to all my APs in the past.
