SMB Shares won´t show up in Windows Clients anymore after upgrade to UNRAID 7.0.0

managed to reproduce it a couple of days ago with one of my server, but yesterday no longer could.

OK, after reading your post, I opened up Windows Explorer.  Only one of my two servers showed up under 'Network'.  (This is the first time, I can ever recall this happening.  Before either both servers show up or neither.)  I decided to do some testing.  I could get to the GUI.  I could open both mapped drives (Y:\ and Z:\).

I waited about a half hour.  It does not appear on its own.  I try to force Windows File Manager to rescan for servers.  It did not seem to do so.  (Scanning the network takes several seconds with a spinner appearing.)

I now closed Windows File Manager.  I reopen it.  I click on 'Network'.  Instant appearance of that single server.  I now clicked on a shortcut to the server. The tab opens instantly showing the shares.  For the first time ever, the server does not show up under 'Network'!  I then opened a Share on the server.  Now it instantly appears.

Again, I close Windows File Manager.  I reopen it.  Only one server.  Same one missing.  I open 'Network' In file manager.  I do  a series of F5's and ctrl-F5's.  So I try the shortcut.  Server opens, showing shares.  No server name under 'Network'.  Click on a share, share opens and the server name appears instantly.  (I know this is the definition of insanity--- trying something over and over expecting different results...)

I also notice that I have a printer missing that is on my network-- it was there yesterday and is hard wired so no WIFI issues -- from the Network pane.

At this point, I think there are some issues with Windows Discovery service.  Quick Google search didn't show anything but I wonder how many people really use Windows Discovery Services on a regular basis.

I restart my computer.  Open Windows File Manager and click on 'Network'.  Again only the one Unraid server plus my own PC. (set up in a peer-to-peer arrangement and this is the first time it has ever appeared on its own).  Again the 'insanity' drill works to bring the second Unraid server online!  And I look over at my Wife's PC and see that my PC now appears under her 'Network'!  As a point of information, my Wife's peer-to-peer does not appear on My PC.

When this happens, does it show up if you stop the array? It usually does when it's this new issue.

I decided to try your suggestion.  But I had already forced the 'missing' server to appear in Windows File Manager.  So I powered down my PC, shut the power off at the power strip, and waited until the power supply capacitor has discharged to the point where the power locator light went out.  I turned the power back on.  I started up Windows File Manager and let it alone while I started up Firefox, logged into my password manager, loaded and signed into the missing server's GUI.  I then looked at Windows File Manager.  There were three servers there--- both Unraid servers and my Wife's PC.  Just what I would expect if everything was working according to script.

This entire issue has to be some sort of edge-case situation...  It is just too random to be anything else.  (Back, 15 years ago, I always said that getting SMB/Samba to behave was more witchcraft than science!)  This was why I opt for (and recommended)--- using shortcuts to servers.  It has never failed me!  Somehow, I found out about using the quick access feature add-in to Windows File Manager and that really integrates things nicely.  For anyone who has not seen this, I am attaching a screenshot:

image.png.785bd984a458d216c6586b5728d591f7.png

My two Unraid servers are pointed to and the circle is around that "Network Neighborhood" Quick Access points to a folder on my Desktop that contains shortcuts to both Unraid servers and all of the peer-to-peer Windows computers that have shared folders on them. So One click gets me to either of my two Unraid servers.  Two clicks will get me to any other server on my LAN and the Quick Access section is relatively uncluttered.

In my case, the only time that the UNRAID server and shares appear is stopping the array. It appear instantly, and it goes away when started, this if you do 5 times. 5 times the same result.

No matter wich windows terminal I use, the same result.

That's what happened to me, but only one server on one day, and even that not always, but on the next day was no longer able to reproduce.

I've been having the same problem since updating to 7.0. SMB worked fine on RC2. I have found the fix... Although I will say, it's a Windows security issue in 24H2.

Quote

a. On the Start Menu search, type powershell then under the Windows PowerShell app, click Run as administrator. Accept the elevation prompt.

b. To disable SMB signing requirement, type:

Set-SmbClientConfiguration -RequireSecuritySignature $false

d. Hit enter, then hit Y to accept.

c. To disable guest fallback, type:

Set-SmbClientConfiguration -EnableInsecureGuestLogons $true

e. Hit enter, then hit Y to accept.

I've just done that and now I can access my shares again. Funnily enough... This is outlined in the release notes for 7.0.

New Windows changes may result in loss of access to Public shares

Due to recent security changes in Windows 11 24H2, "guest" access of Unraid public shares may not work. The easiest way around this is to create a user in Unraid with the same name as the Windows account you are using to connect. If the Unraid user password is not the same as the Windows account password, Windows will prompt for credentials.

If you are using a Microsoft account, it may be better to create a user in Unraid with a simple username, set a password, then in Windows go to Control Panel → Credential Manager → Windows credentials → Add a Windows Credential and add the correct Unraid server name and credentials.

Alternately you can re-enable Windows guest fallback (not recommended).

I'm experiencing the same issue after updating to 7.0.0 a few days ago, I've had the problem before of my Unraid sever not showing in the windows file explorer before usually after a fresh windows install or on a new windows machine but this affected all windows clients at once.  I know of several work arounds that fix this issue but no such luck this time.

Scroll down to the March 15, 2024 Edit and download the PDF file that it referenced in that section.  It describes how to add a direct link to your server in the 'Quick access' pane of Windows File Explorer/Manager.  This solution will always work!

As far as I am concerned, The dependable appearance of servers under 'Network' in Windows File/ Explorer/Manager has been "broke" since MS removed SMBv1 from their  SMB install.  At least, this is the case for peer-to-peer networking which what most of us Unraid users employ.  I am not sure what happens when the servers are using Active Directory.

I'm sorry that I didn't mention that my mapped network drives still connect and are accessible in my original post, but yes this solution does work but sadly I don't have all shares mapped (nor do i want them to be) I appreciate the advice though :)

Yes the Sever does show when the array is stopped, For the time being I have downgraded back to 6.12.14 witch has solved all problems.  I was simply trying to add my voice to the chorus that there is some sort of issue with 7.0.0.

It's a known issue, but it only happens to a few users, so difficult to reproduce, but will hopefully be fixed soon.

If the shortcut points only to the server  (  \\{server_name}  ), opening the quick access link will show all the shares that are being shared via SMB.  See screenshot from Windows File Explorer/Manager below:

They do not have to be mapped.  In fact, none of these shares are mapped on this PC.

Today, I was looking for some other info on SMBv1 and came across this post on the Microsoft Community website:

      https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/filecab/stop-using-smb1/425858

Scroll down to the section entitled "Explorer Network Browsing"  and read that information.  I don't know if it will help in fixing this problem of not...

By the way, Unraid does have a switch under   SETTINGS   >>>  SMB    to enable WSD.  (I know that some folks in the larger MS networking world have turned off WSD because it seems to contribute to a 'disappearing' printer problem.)

Hi all. I am experiencing this as well. Is there a thread other than this to follow for updates if there is a fix? Thx

There's no fix at them moment since it only affects a few users and LT has been ubale to reproduce, but if it's the same issue, you can still access the shares mapping a drive or typing in the Windows explorer address bar \\tower or \\server_IP

I tried typing "MEDIA-SERVER" (and adding the share name after) and could not access. Perhaps mine is a different issue. Should I try restarting the array? I attributed this to upgrading to 7.0, as I haven;t experienced this issue prior. Thx

EDIT: I restarted the array and it resolved. Thanks (and sorry for unintentional hijacking)

FIXED

  • 3 weeks later...

Any more news on when this bug is going to get fixed ?? I still have this issue on version 7.0.1. Had to downgrade yet again back to 6.12.15 to see my server in windows networking. It's not very good releasing buggy updates for software that's been paid for.

Not AFAIK, the problem is that this is only happening to a very few users, LT is looking into it but cannot reproduce so far, you should still be able to access the shares using mapped drives or \\tower\share

It's happening to more than just a few users, look on the net. I have scoured the internet to try to resolve this issue, with no luck. Updates should not be released without thorough testing, instead of using paying customers as Guinea pigs. I'm not happy about this at all, as the issue should have been resolved by now. So I'm stuck on an older version until LT get their act together.

I do not want to have to manually type my server address every time I need to access shares on customers Computers.

Read these for a work around to your problem:

I have had to use this solution for more then three years as Windows 'Network' can not even reliably find other peer-to-peer Windows client-servers on my network.  (It basically happened when Windows removed the SMBv1 protocol from SMB.  Yes, I know you can reinstall SMBv1 but that is a real security hazard for folks using home type networks.  Even Unraid has removed SMBv1 from any new installations.)  If you create a shortcut to your server on your desktop and click on the 'Pin to Quick Access' on the right-click menu for that shortcut, you will never miss Not having your server(s) show up under 'Network'.

If you have a large number of servers, create Desktop shortcuts to each one.  Then create a folder on your desktop and move all the shortcuts into that folder.  Now use that right-click and 'Pin to Quick Access' procedure.  You now an equivalent of 'Network' in Windows File Manager/Explorer and that always works!

EDIT: This what it looks like on my Windows client computers.  I can even copy the Network Neighborhood folder to another computer's desktop and install it on that computer.  (Only Elsie1 and Rose are Unraid servers, the rest are Windows client-servers running Windows 10/11 PRO.)

It's not really a good workaround for me, as I would have to do this on every customer's computer.
