PS3mediaserver

Featured Replies

Would it be possible for some of you, to make a section in Wiki with a how-to.

pretty please :-)

I've made a PS3 Media Server wiki page, based on this thread and gswarriorfan's most useful blog post.

was a useful exercise going through wiki text while I installed ps3ms on my unRAID. Am about 75% through, in that I appear to have it running, but not working. Am trying to use it for a Samsung BluRay player, and their systems appear notoriously finicky. It is alleged, on another forum, that it works, but I suspect that I may need to do a lot of experimentation.

As I'm not in a position to confirm that all the steps work, have put a 'this is draft' disclaimer at the top until its had some checking.

things I'd be interested to see added/expanded

- how this could use unMENU's autoupdating JRE rather than a standalone instance

- what the settings in the conf file do

- systems other than the PS3 that unraid users have got this working with

- any other ways of testing that the system is working, for users without PS3s, before system-specific experiments begin

Hi

I was wondering if PS3mediaserver could be installed on the raid and just path the Go to the Raid instead of the Memory stick. Not that I have problems with the memorystick I am just conserned that if the memory stick could be used to much and couse it to die?

Would this go for all apps that I want to install? or some work only from the memory stick....

What about using a part of the Cashe drive?

I'd like to preface my post by saying my programming knowledge is very sad.  But I've managed to get my unRAID server up and working and am happy about that.  But I've been trying to get this PS3 Mediaserver to work and I'm having some problems.  I had the same issues as other people I've noticed where I couldn't get the PS3MS up on the PS3 but I noticed the pms.jar file needed to be in the /custom/ps3ms directory, so I've gotten that fixed.  I can watch wmv videos so far with no problems, but mp4 videos have a a/v sync issue.  I'm working on that.

My biggest problem is I can't get my DVDs to play correctly.  I backed up one of DVDs as an ISO file and it isn't showing up on the list under videos.  When I save it as a file, I can play the vob files independently from the /mnt/user/Movies directory but that is just pieces of the movie and the audio track is just randomly picked and I can't change it.  Here is my PMS.CONF file:

thumbnails = true
alternativeffmpegpath =
/boot/custom/usr/share/packages/ps3mediaserver/linux
mencoder_ass = true
folders = /mnt/user/Movies/DVD/SUNSHINE,/mnt/user/Movies,/mnt/user/Music,/mnt/user/Pictures,/mnt/user/Movies/DVD
audiobitrate = 640
notranscode = avi,mp3,m2ts,ts,mp4
mencoder_usepcm = false
mencoder_mt = false
tsmuxer_preremux_pcm = true
mencoder_remux_ac3 = true
mencoder_encode = keyint=3:vqscale=2:vqmin=3
engines = mencoder,tsmuxer,avsffmpeg,avsmencoder,mplayeraudio,ffmpegaudio,tsmuxeraudio,vlcvideo,mencoderwebvideo,mplayervideodump,mplayerwebaudio,vlcaudio,ffmpegdvrmsremux,rawthumbs

Anybody have any ideas where I'm going wrong?  Thanks.

Just a question... is PS3MediaServer in fact a "generic" MediaServer?

In other words, they made it for PS3, but can really be used as a media server in general?

To be honest the limitations I read it has, are not few and some are in fact important limitations.

Is it really the best we can have?

(from the open source community)

To my knowledge the author has only created the necessary DLNA profile for the PS3, but also claims XB360 'experimental' support is present.  The limitations are almost all due to the PS3.  For example, the PS3 can certainly play Blu-ray with VC-1 encoding, but refuses to play the same VC-1 encoded stream from a server - this is purely a PS3 limitation.  What ps3mediaserver does in this case is transcode VC-1 on-the-fly, which unfortunately requires a very powerful processor.

A late update from my side on this...

I haven't installed PS3M on unRAID yet, but I can confirm, that it will work with other renderers as well.

I got a new Panasonic P42GW20 TV on the weekend and gave PS3MS a try.

All you have to do is to create the appropriate .conf (pro)file for your renderer...I found one in the

PS3MS forum for my TV and gave the latest BETA a try under WinXP (inside a KVM).

Of course I was able to stream videos "native" but I had some divx files which the TV-set did'nt like.

Transcoding with PS3MS did the job, although it is more hungry on ressources than mediatomb.

My Phillips NP2500 (Radio/Audio) would also recognise it and play MP3 files just fine.

...i am going to retire my mediatomb VM and will use PS3MS on unRAID in the future I think.

Let us know how you get on with the install on unRAID.

I've got most of the way through the initial install. An error with ffmpeg to resolve, then need to update to the latest beta and find a conf file that samsung blu-ray /tv are happy with.

And please check and update the wiki page. In particular if you work out what's going on with the conf files

My unRaid will be starting off of a full slackware install, based on a SSD drive.

So it won't be a standard build I am afraid...but I'll keep you posted in any case.

Ford,

I'm going to try getting ps3mediaserver up and running on a full slackware install as well.  I'm just waiting on some computer parts which should be in by next weekend.  Can you keep us updated on your progress?  Thanks!

Finished to setup my unRAID 4.5.4 Plus box on a full slack13.0 yesterday.

I will try to proceed with enabling Virtualbox first...

Then I will carry on with PS3MS, based on this package as

apparently someone baked a slackbuild for it.

OK, here's the first, brief update...I've been trying this inside a VM, focusing on PS3MS, not unRAID.

..once you have unRAID on a full slackware up&running, reproducing the steps for PS3MS

should take approx 20mins or so...

What you need:

- a full slackware install of slack 13.0 (this should work fine for unRAID 4.5.4 as well)

 Install the X11 system and apps as well...you'll need to make use of the UI of PS3MS,

 at least this is why/where running a full slack is of advantage, isn't it.

 I opted to NOT install the KDE stuff with my slack 13.0 setup, just X

- enable X11 (configure it...test it, i.e. run 'startx')

- enable slackpkg (enable a mirror under /etc/slackpkg/mirrors)

 run slackpkg update

 run slackpkg upgrade-all

How to proceed building PS3MS (run as root):

- we will use this slackbuild for PS3MS

 It will build PS3MS from the latest SVN tree (from trunk; the beta)

- as stated in the article from the forum you will need java sdk and ant working

 my slack13.0 didn't come with either of the two, so we need to fetch them

 for jdk: issue a 'slackpkg install jdk-6' and java sdk should install fine

 for ant:

    fetch it from slackbuilds.org, here

    fetch both, Slackbuild script and source,

    untar the Slackbuild and put/move the source file into the Slackbuild-folder

    run the Slackbuild script; the resulting target for ant should end up in your /tmp dir.

    issue 'installpkg apache-ant-1.8.1-noarch-1_SBo.tgz' from there

- fetch the PS3MS Slackbuild package from the link in the forum

 You will need ALL the files and subdirs from the pms tree

  I'd suggest you create a folder 'ps3ms' and store/fetch everything in there...don't forget the patch subdir and it's contents.

  'cd' into the ps3ms folder; do a 'chmod a+x pms-linux.SlackBuild' and run the script.

  It should fetch the PS3MS beta sources and then build the package.

 The package will be created in /tmp again

  install it with 'installpkg <your-pms-release_paissad.tgz>', i.e mine was just produced as

  'pms-linux-1.20.409r410-i686-1_paissad.tgz'

- PS3MS application will appear as 'pms-linux' in the Multimedia App section of your Window-Manager

 This shows pms-linux running under xfce...first start..unconfigured..it detected my Panasonic TV as a non-PS3 renderer...so far, so good...

...will continue to reproduce the steps with my unRAID tomorrow....

        Ford

wow thanks Ford!  do you plan on running your box headless?

wow thanks Ford!  do you plan on running your box headless?

Yes, definitely. I am running a supermicro X7SPA-HF in a rack-case

and will use the remote KVMoverIP feature embedded with IPMI on the board.

...no keyboard or monitor needs to be attached.

OK, the tarball I created on my test-VM installs fine on my unRaid 4.5.4, based on full slack 13.0.

Starting PS3MS via the provided rc.pms-linux script in the background works OK.

Streaming to my TV set works OK...SD material, transcoding with mplayer is fine as well..haven't  tried HD material though.

However, starting it from X, would have the PS3MS instance loaded/started without fetching the renderer profiles.

Looks like an issue with the directory PS3MS gets started from....this is not related to The unraid install, because

I can reproduce it on my non-unRAID VM.

Are you streaming directly to your tv set, or PS3?

Are you streaming directly to your tv set, or PS3?

I am streaming directly to the TV set; I am avoiding the little gizmos

sitting on the shelves, coming with their own remotes ("where the H/§%* is my DVD remote and

why would switching tracks on the DVD cycle on/off the TV?  :o)

...with PS3MS it is just a matter of the right profile for your renderer...piece o' cake, isn't it  :D

are you able to stream 1080p to your tv?  sorry, i have nothing to do right now but ask questions... :)

Well, for streaming the answer is yes.

For streaming w. transcoding the answer is...maybe  ;D

I did some tests with the bigbuckbunny FullHD animation, that is freely available.

My TV won't eat it as is...transcoding on my Atom Dual Core with mplayer is

almost possible...but just almost...i'll tweak along...SD transcoding however is doing fine.

Edit: found this thread in another forum, that would support my position

If you are on the system console, press

Alt-F2

to get to the second virtual console and log in there.

You can switch back to the first with

Alt-F1

There are 6 virtual consoles, Alt-F1 through Alt-F6 available for logging in.

THANKS,

I didn't know that.

But is the "Sending Alive" repetition normal?

is it possible to build mplayer using just unraid or would I have to do a VM slackware to build it and transfer the package to unraid?

If you only use unRAID, you'll have to install the compiler tools at a minimum and likely need to add a swap file.

When I have my go script run ps3mediaplayer, it'll show everything from / to my ps3 so I have to manually go to /mnt/user/movies to get to my movies and the such.

BUT when I type the "./PMS.sh" from telnet into my unraid server to start ps3mediaserver, the folders work fine.  I see movies as the top directory without having to go through /mnt/user/...

Anyone else have this problem?

Edit:

Fixed this problem, I had "/boot/custom/pmsbeta/PMS.sh" in my go script, and typing that in telnet yielded the same result.  After doing cd /boot/custom/pmsbeta and then ./PMS.sh everything worked.

I changed my go script accordingly, turns out you NEED to cd into the pms folder and ./PMS.sh

Hope this helps.

  • 2 weeks later...

Have been following this thread with interest, and the question I have has been asked a few times but no real answer can I find,

What is/would be a good unRaid build to allow good to excellent results for using PS3MS to stream DVD and Bluray files to my PS3?

Just the Budget box will do?

Or something with a more powerful Dual Core CPU and 4Gb Ram?

Thanks In Advance

Is there a way to initiate a library scan from the command line?
