So I have two drives running badblocks, same seagate, connected to the same controller started at the same time.

 

One is running a lot faster than the other, is that indicative of a bad drive?

One job may be having more priority then the other. Although you would think the kernel would schedule them evenly, any form of buffering could impact that.  Look at the syslog to see if any of the drives are reporting issues, that would definitely slow it down.

There are other situations that could affect it, Current use of machine, how the controllers are mapped and where they are in regards to the bus. Some SATA ports on the motherboard have a high bandwidth. Some PCIe slots are behind other types of controllers. It's hard to estimate what it should be without knowing the server's configuration and how the motherboard maps the slots and controllers.

Hi, i have a question: if i put new disk into NAS, and connect to NAS through telnet (or SSH terminal) and start preclearing and then exit telnet...will the preclear process stop or no?

 

And if it won't, how can I connect again and see the progress status?

Joe -- Why is that a "No" ???

 

I'd have thought "all zeroes" was the sign of a successful pre-clear operation.    What else do we need to look for?

Because the section posted does not look at any of the other SMART parameters.    It is NOT the report output from the pre-clear, but only part of it.  It does not say that the disk was pre-cleared successfully, but only that there were zero re-allocated sectors and zero sectors pending re-allocation.  (granted, that is good, but not unless you look at and compare the pre-and-post SMART reports.)

So "no", it is not all that you need to look at.  It is only part of it.

unless you invoked the preclear process under "screen", it stopped.  There is no way to see its progress if you log in again, since it stopped.  All you can do is start it again from the beginning.

 

If you did use "screen" you can log back in and type

screen -r

to resume your screen session.

As you know, the "preclear_reports" folder on the UnRAID flash drive contain 3 files for each preclear that's been done:  (1)  preclear_start_<drive serial number>;  preclear_rpt_<drive serial number>; and preclear_finish_<drive serial number>

 

Am I missing anything if I simply look at the "preclear_rpt_<drive serial number>" file?    For example, this is the contents of a recent one for one of my 3TB drives -- which shows only the temperature attribute changing (obviously a normal change), and all zeroes for the other items discussed above:

Hey everyone. I just did my first ever preclear, and was wondering if someone might have a couple minutes to verify that this drive is good to go. It looks good to me, but I could easily be missing something. I've attached the preclear_results.txt file. I would be quite grateful for any help at all.

Other than you used a version of the preclear script that is 4 versions old, all looks fine.

 

Current version is 1.13, you used 1.9.

 

Your older version does not work properly on disks > 2TB.

Mmm... my telnetdaemon just died on me, preclear is running in SCREEN but I cannot get to it without telnet.. I started it up wit the parameter that prevents writing of info in the preclear results directory (also no email alerts), is there any way now for me to know if preclear is still running and what the results are when it is finished ?

 

If not I will hook up a monitor and keyboard and check on console, but it is kind of a hassle, so if there is another way ?  Maybe the end result will get written to the preclear results directory anyway ?

screen is not connected to the telnet session. (or rather, does not die when telnet disconnected)

 

Did you try running

screen -r

to see the existing "screen" sessions so you can re-connect to it?

 

About the only other thing you can do is type

top

and see if the screen and preclear process is still running. (you would see "dd" constantly being invoked)

or you can look in the /tmp directory.  The preclear process writes its status files there.

Was hoping you could help me with these. I just built an UNRAID a few weeks ago, I was able to get three HDD drives in there that all passed the preclear.

 

I finally upgraded to the Pro license so that I could use this 128GB SSD that a friend had lying around as my cache drive. This is the first time a preclear has failed. It says the failing SMART attribute is 4 Start_Stop_Count. Can someone help me interpret this?
