90TB - The russian way

Featured Replies

Damn, blocked by firewalls.  Can you give a brief explanation of what it is?

  ZOMG... thats a thing of beauty

raj its a crazy wooden built 90TB 45 WD20ears creation.

English version:

"I made this Gravicapa for home using. The Hards are collected in the raids, mostly raid5, from time to time I also make experiments with raid 50. The Hardware report you can get from file report.txt.

This is not the first experience of creating such big data arrays and using plywood for it.

This system has been working for 2.5 years, and nothing has caught fire, and could not ... The hard disks’ temperature doesn’t go higher than 35C. Why did I use plywood? There are several reasons for it. First of all, it’s the matter of price. One sheet of plywood at cost 17$, was enough for it. Secondly, plywood better than iron absorbs the vibration from the hard. Thirdly, it is easy to make at home. The door is made from Plexiglas (it’s almost invisible on photo), it means that the blow from bottom to top goes pretty strong through the hards. Top. The fans are made as doors, providing access to the interior in case of need. The box has not been fully completed yet, the bottom will have dust filters. Hhdd mostly Westerns Green to 2TB, is quiet, cold, and quite reliable. The Hards sometimes die, but raid 5 saves the situation. It’s been working for more than a year and only 3 of 48 hdds were passed under warranty.

Some people are worried about UPS, it still has up to 3.000Vt, its loading - 40-45%%.

Almost half of the volume is occupied by images of blur discs and DVD disks with movies of different years. “So much! What for?” – you can ask. And I’ll answer: “Why not? But then it is optional on my part what to watch”.

It doesn’t make much noise. Sitting next to it you can communicate almost in a whisper. Coolers on 1200 are spinning even more slowly as they plow on 9 volts.

Any professional solution of this volume will be much more expensive and many times more noisy.

Sorry for bad english."

I dont know how to put the pics up for you to see it but the bottom and top lid i guess you would say has 20 fans each....lol

like his story says it def looks hand made but its a beast

wow 6% drive failure rate in a year.... pretty crappy.

LOL - Did you catch the leaning tower of HDDs on the desk in the 5th picture?

Gotta run - I'm on my way to Home Depot ....

I chuckled at that, maybe why his failure rate seems high ;)

I like that the HDDs are all trayless and screwless.  Norco could learn something from this guy!

I'd give this guy an A+ for creativity.  I don't need a $250+ case, I'll make mine from a $17 sheet of plywood and it'll be sweet.  It's a good thing he dialed the fan voltage back to 9v.  A few more volts and he'd have to file a flight plan for that thing.

plywood + skill saw +liquid nails = Success :)

so what Russian Diplomats kids did he ransom to buy all those hard drives... :D

My thought too.  That's $4,500 worth of HDDs...

All it's missing is Duct Tape and Bailing Wire :o

That and the other stacks sitting directly on the carpet.

My server rack is made from plywood but I used standard rack rails front and rear so it looks like a normal rack painted black. Has a 1.5 kva UPS, a old 4U server, and old 1U server and a 3U unRaid system plus some other assorted rack mounted things. Cost a hell of a lot less than an equvalent steel rack and looks just as good. One sheet of MDO is what I used. Big casters on the bottom.

MDO is a 5 or 7 ply plywood with one or both sides coverd in a film of paper which takes paint perfectly.  Normally used to make signs.

If a guy has $4500 worth of hard drives and has to resort to building a case out of plywood to save money, I can't help but wonder where did he get the hard drives and what is he doing with 96TB of space?  And why is it so dang big?

...but I can't help but love the simplicity.  Removable motherboard tray?  Why would I need that?

Why don't you post some pics?

Impressive in a strange way :) I'd have been more impressed if he'd have used some old wooden pallets he found lying around.

Still the questions remains, what to do with 90TB of storage? What in god's name do you put on that setup for *home* usage?

Blu-ray rips. There's a fella on these forums with 2x 40TB unRAID servers.

re my Plywood rack:  If I can ever figure out how to post pics I will do that, (Post pics of the plywood rack)

I work only in MDO plywoof as the film covering is perfect for paint and takes wood veneers perfectly for making furniture.  It is dimensionally very stable and extremely strong. Probably should have covered the wood with teak veneer instead of black paint.  Then visitors could ask why if it is in a closet.
