  1. I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. It's a typo. Not that it really matters, but for the record, every other chip of that generation states "5GT/s DMI2", while the 1230 states "5 GT/s DMI". Please refer to the screenshots below :).
  2. Then there's a typo on their site, as the 1230 says DMI, while the 1241 says DMI2.
  3. Ahhhhh! That makes sense (Though why it would affect the 1230 and not the 1241 is beyond me. They appear to be almost identical. Only difference I could see is the 1230 supports DMI and the 1241 DMI2). For those that, like me, who had no idea what DMI was: When does the new CPU arrive?
  4. I wouldn't believe the seller. They appear to have the same TDP (80w), so logically, the old fan should have been fine... Another question: if upgrading your cpu, why not go with something that would be more of an upgrade? You appear to be gaining less around 700 points on cpu mark, and no extra cores etc. Seems like a big expense for little return... [Edit] Just looked at your options for that socket, and there doesn't seem to be that much more out there... Looks like you'd have to go with new mobo and/or ram as well to see a significant performance jump... That makes it more difficult (and pricey) for sure...
  5. I used to be in the "doesn't affect every user" group. I was aware of the problem, but foolishly thought I was immune . Then my onboard Marvell controller had a hissy fit, and I ended up losing 3 drives connected to it. I recovered 2 with dual parity, but the third had some serious issues that xfs_repair could not fix. Managed to recover a bunch of files through recovery software, but not a fun task . Moral of the story: Get off Marvell controller asap! Especially if you're using vt-d. For the cost of a used Dell 310 controller, I could have avoided the hours I've spent recovering drives and content. Sigh. Live and learn
  6. Among other things, I believe it works kind of like a dynamic dns service, in that when you're outside your network, you don't need to connect via IP address. You login to a website (https://app.emby.media ? ), and then depending on your user name and password, you are presented with the server/servers that username is linked to. Very handy if you plan on accessing your media from outside your network (Or are sharing your media with others), but as I do not access my media from outside the network, I didn't bother.... Here's more info.
  7. I purchased a pci-e USB3.0 controller with a Renesas chipset, but I use it for my Windows VM. For the mac, I'm using a motherboard header cable to 2 port USB something like this. My motherboard has 2 separate USB controllers, so one I use for the UnRaid USB Key, and the other for OSX. I run a 50' active USB cable from one of the ports to a USB hub. I use a USB sharing switch and have the logitech dongle plugged into it for keyboard/mouse. The switch is then plugged into the Mac USB hub (as well as the Windows USB Hub coming off the USB 3.0 card). That way, at the touch of a button, I can switch the K/M between my Mac to the Windows VMs. Yes. I tried with literally 5 or 6 different dongles, but audio quality on the Mac was lacking. Not bad, but cracks and pops periodically. Drove me crazy . My monitor does not have speakers either. I ended up getting an HDMI matrix switch with 4 inputs (2 screens and 2 outputs from each VM), with an RCA output that splits the audio from whatever HDMI cable is currently active, and outputs it to my regular computer speakers. I can output any combination of video feeds to my 2 monitors that way (e.g: Main monitor PC, Secondary monitor PC. Main PC, Secondary Mac Main etc.. etc..). Audio will be output from whatever HDMI feed is on my Main monitor. This works most of the time. Every now and then the Mac forgets it has audio, and I need to reboot, but it is rare... Yup. See above! I'm thinking of maybe doing a writeup with pics one of these days because it took me awhile to get this setup like I want, and personally, I think it's a pretty slick setup and might benefit others who are also looking at replacing their Macs/PCs with passthrough VMs. HTH!
  8. Nice! If you end up building a Xeon powered SFF, be sure to post your build so we can see it! Caveat: I have no experience with that board and UnRaid, so you definitely want to do a bit of due diligence before buying !
  9. A little googling pulled this little gem up. ASRock EPC612D4I The Good Supports a wide range of e5 v3 and v4 Xeon chips, so you should be good on the power front. 64GB of ddr4 (Doesn't state a max, but it does mentions 16GB and 4 slots.) Dual gigabit ethernet. IPMI. The Bad Only 1 PCI-e slot. Only 4 onboard sata slots If your VM doesn't need passthrough video, you could put a controller in the PCI-e slot, and fix problem #2, but if you need video passthrough support, you're limited to 4 drives.
  10. There is no official recommended board. Your best bet is to find a decent mobo that fits your bill, then scour the boards looking for other people using it... Supermicro is generally fairly safe, though expensive. I don't recall seeing any complaints re: the Intel boards that Natex sells. Were I to build another one of these today, I would probably go for one of those (Mostly because of price). Finally, If ASRock could fix this bios bug, the board I'm using would also be a good solution. It has all the bells and whistles, IPMI, 4 ethernet ports, multiple USB controllers, lots of PCI-e slots, plenty of onboard sata (Though avoid using the Marvell controller (4 ports) - They are flaky in UnRaid - There's a thread in here with a list of all the Marvell controllers affected - it's not just the one on this board)
  11. Hurrah! Glad to hear you're set up! Post back and let us know how it goes over . I never made an Emby Connect account. I just made local users. I'm not entirely sure what extra functionality you get with Emby Connect... I did buy a lifetime Emby Premiere membership though. Especially because I'm sure the price will be going up to match Plex in the next year or two... It's nice that you can re-install Kodi now without the hassle of re-scraping your library though, isn't it? re: Music: I didn't like the music functionality that much either. I also removed it from the Emby library. I know other people use and love it for music, so I figure I just wasn't setting it up properly, but for my collection, I usually just navigate to a folder and click on an album. I don't really want any fancy music library functionality... Movie and TV Show management is really all I care about. Oh, I forgot to mention that Emby also does Parental controls quite well, if that is a concern. That feature is even available in the free version of the app.
  12. 16GB should be fine. More is always nicer though, and if the budget can swing it, I'd probably go 32GB.... The thing with UnRaid 6+ is that they keep adding fun new functionality to it, and the more you use it, the more things you might want to try . If you buy 16GB now, and realize a year from now that maybe you want a second VM, or dedicate more ram to a specific Docker, or they come out with some new functionality that needs more, buying later is always a bit of a hassle (Compatibility concerns etc)...
  13. If that card has HDMI, make sure to passthough the audio from the videocard as well. VMs often don't seem to like not having the HDMI audio passed through (even if you don't need it). If it doesn't have HDMI (It looks like that card came out almost 10 years ago), I'm not sure it would have audio to passthrough though... (Maybe some fancier DVI cards?).
  14. Most forums I use have a built-in 1 minute delay after you post a post, where if you edit it right after posting, it doesn't show that it has been edited. I'll often make a post, post it, then see a typo that I want to fix after it goes live. It would be nice if I could go back in and edit it right away and not have it say 'edited' This isn't a big deal by any means, but it would be nice to have .
  15. +1 for passthrough!! I have mine setup with passthrough GPU, as well as a passthrough USB controller. It is a completely seamless experience. Other than the fact that there is complete silence when using it (because server is in another room), you wouldn't know it was a VM. I especially like passing through the whole USB controller, because it gives a user the ability to hot plug USB keys/drives/other peripherals like you would in a regular Mac.
  16. As for the original question, I use the ASRock EP2C602-4L/D16. Other than one irritating bios bug, the board has been great. The problem is that my board (and most other people I have communicated with who have this board) will trigger false CPU overheating events (Temp goes to 101 degrees Celcius) periodically. If you don't have a plugin that sends you alerts, you may not even know it, but if you do, you can get peppered with emails telling you that your CPUs are melting down. I have reached out to ASRock and they tell me they are working on a bios update to fix this... in the meantime, I have used the ipmi plugin to modify the threshold temp to 102 Celcius so the alert is not triggered. Also, if the alert gets triggered, the case and CPU fans sometimes get stuck at full speed and will only return to smart fan settings on a reboot. Again, with my temporary threshold temp adjustment, that never happens, but it is a work around, and I would like to see a real solution from ASRock...
  17. Well, 32 threads. There are still only 8 cores per chip, so 16 physical cores, but when designating 'cores' in Unraid for VMs and Dockers, you have 32 to play with... That said, it's usually recommended to assign the pairs together, so in reality, there are still 16 'sets' you can assign (and this applies to all CPUs in UnRaid).
  18. Thanks for the extra feedback! . So you're still getting the incorrect temp reporting for the cpus, but the extra ram solved the machine check and irq16 problems? Hmmm... I think what I'm taking from this is that you are suggesting that I have to buy more ram to fill the empty slots on my board.... Sounds like my hands are tied... No choice in the matter... !
  19. Too bad :(. I'm honestly surprised there's not more talk about MoCA 2.0. It is far superior to powerline, but maybe, as in your case, it's not a fit for everyone (while everyone will have multiple power sockets in their home). Another thought: Do USB headers that are not in use (no USB header cable attached to the pins on the motherboard) show up using 'lspci'? Have you confirmed that you only have the one USB header on your motherboard? What model is your mobo? Just a shot in the dark, but thought I'd ask PS: The libvirt plugin works great! Until I passed through my entire controllers, I used it all the time.
  20. Check out the e5-2670 buy thread. There's some discussion in there. This is a bug in the board. I have contacted asRock several times regarding it. Last contact was a week or two ago. They told me they are going to try and work on a bios fix, but I haven't heard anything back yet. You are not alone with this bug. A short term fix that I have implemented is using this ipmi plugin to change the temperature trigger from 90 to 102 degrees for the cpus so they don't trigger the annoying alert... Obviously only a temporary fix, as I would like to have it actually working properly :).
  21. The software needs to be coded to support multiple threads. It used to be fairly rare to see support for it, but in this day and age, as multi-cored cpus have become the norm, it's become much more common...
  22. I'd be interested in that too! Also, don't forget, the Xeon 2650 chips may have a slower default speed, but they have turbo boost as well. Perhaps in a single-threaded processor intensive task, the turbo will make up the bulk of the difference? I'm not sure how the Passmark value takes that into account (especially when comparing a turbo vs a non-turbo chip)
