  1. Good points all, but a couple of observations..... Typical (traditional?) software release schedules consider betas to be functionally complete, and are provided for testing and big fixes only. Limetech don't seem to follow this, and the beta cycle becomes more of an extended alpha with new bits being added all the time. This is likely the root cause of the often unfeasibly long beta cycles, and why they don't talk about release schedules - you cant predict them with this methodology. I'd prefer to see scope-limited releases with fixed feature sets, tested efficiently and released on a more regular basis. I think this would also help grow adoption as new users see a healthy, vibrant platform with regular updates and new feature additions. The second point is, historically, unRaid tends to get new features in a rough & ready manner, something like this release. It works, but requires a degree of pfaffing about in config files and the like to get it set up. The UI tends to follow a release or 2 later when the feature & functionality settles down. I recall being about for the birth of VMs, when not only did we need to hand code all the VM XML files, but Limetech changed the VM engine very late in the day, and a lot of the knowledge and skill early adopters had built up had to be thrown out and re-learned. For such reasons, it makes sense that they don't focus on a smooth UI early on - if the underlying implementation needs to be re-factored, that would be a waste of work.
  2. Hi All A lot of us use screen sharing or remote access tools to get up and running with or to manage our VMs. I've been using SplashTop for a few years and never found a reason to move away from it. Since it's a tool I use myself and have no hesitation recommending, I became part of their referral programme a while back,. and today got notified of an offer on their referral program. Anyone signing up with a referral link will get 1 month free, so something of a bargain if you're looking for this kind of service. Here's the link: https://my.splashtop.com/splashtop_referral/AAHHjQreK2fNsQ I get an amazon gift card for any signups, so a small contribution to my never-ending unRaid hardware budget. Thanks for looking.
  3. I have a link to a blog article in my sig that has a few steps worth trying. You never know, something there might help in your case.
  4. i thought about it, but I need to run some new cables anyway.... I run a number of VMs on my UnRAID, several of which are routed around the house using HDBaseT Tx/Rx devices from Av Access. My main workstation will be re-routed to the garage in this way over 2x Cat6a cables. As the only link I have between the buildings is a 20 year old Cat5e, it won't cut the mustard for this AND networking use. While I'm pulling those, I may as well add some extras, one of which can be used for the 10G link. I'll retain the Cat5e as an independed link for security camera traffic. This setup works incredibly well for us - workstations comprise only screens and mouse/keyboard - no noise, no big box and reduced overall power draw as everything is consolidated. I thought about moving the unRaid server physically to my garage, but if I did that, I'd still need the HDBaseT cable runs to get the house based systems connected up.
  5. Thanks. The buildings are only about 2M apart, and are served by the same electrical meter. I already have cat5e runs between them - just need to add some Cat6A fo 10G.
  6. Hi unRaiders I'm resurrecting an office space in an outbuilding and am in the process adding 10G switches and some cable runs to link the building with my main house. A happy side effect of this upgrade is that I will be adding a 10G NIC to my unRaid server. In the system, I currently have a pair of 1Gb MB sockets that are aggregated to a Unifi US-8 switch. My question is, should I simply replace the current 1Gbs with the 10G connection, or is there any merit in maintaining the teamed 1Gbs as well? I use my server for data storage, Dockers and a slew of VMs. Would it be a good idea to dedicate the existing network to, say docker and / or VMs and have the 10G for data only, or will a single 10G connection be more than adequate for my needs. (I'm thinking the later, but want to ensure this is the right approach) Networking has always been a bit of a black box to me, so all hints and advice appreciated.
  7. Welcome to unRaid! Have a look at the steps and tips in the link in my sig. This covers a high proportion of issues and difficulties in setting up GPUs in VMs. If, having worked through everything there, you still have problems, do as testdasi says and post diagnostics. (if you cannot find a bios readily available, you may need to dump it from the card itself - SpacveInvaderOne has videos on this as well).
  8. While the GPU portions of the XMl look OK, there could be any number of other issues. For example, the system could be stuck at the windows login prompt and I beleive Spalshtop needs to access a desktop session. (Did you use netplwiz to auto-login? Did splashtop work BEFORE you added the GPU?). Or yiour system could be stuck in the boot process somewhere, like in recovery mode, and you cannot see it? Check out the steps in the link in my sig to help you get to a point where at least you can vide the boot process to see whats going on (virt-manager docker is your friend)
  9. Great to hear you got it working. For future reference, as requested here's a short blog post from a while ago that has details of the USb audio devicves I use; https://mediaserver8.blogspot.com/2019/08/vm-audio-solution.html
  10. Ah, that makes more sense. You don’t have audio in your streaming client, not the physical card. I’d imagine this is because there’s no physical external device attached to the decode the audio stream does this kind of configuration work with a bare-metal (non vm) set up? I’m not sure those dummy plugs are smart enough to fool the system on the audio as well as video side of things. i do sometimes use parsec, but also have cheap usb audio devices attached to VM and that seems to do the trick. (Usb device plugged in to USB adapter which is passed through to the vm).
  11. Not sure what’s going on without a little more detail, but why would you need a dummy Hdmi in the gpu if you have the card attached to an actual display? Does the display support audio over Hdmi, or what’s the physical set up like? What’s shown in your windows audio control panel?
  12. @Gobananas @Unraid Newbie In both the above cases, the xml for the video devices have not been edited correctly. This may not be the root cause, but there are a number of steps you can follow for best results. Check out the link in my sig and come back with the suggested deayils once you’ve exhausted those steps.
  13. It’s unlikely to be the same issue as the symptom is different, unless you have an identical error? i suggest you review the link in my sig and then come back and start your own thread with your own specific details.
  14. Where is the audio device? 06:00.01? Is it possible you’ve passed through the video portion of a card but not the audio? please have a look at all the steps in the link in my sig and come back with detailed iommu groupings, vm xml etc if the problem persists.
  15. Also for troubleshooting, try to not have vnc and gpu assigned at the same time. Use splashtop or some other remote access software (not rdp).
  16. If you check the properties in device manager for the basic display adapter, you’ll likely find a -43 error. nvidia drivers do not play nice when they detect the host is a vm. please check the steps outlined in the link in my sig to get started resolving this.
  17. There's a degree of trial and error with all these things. If you reserve 2x cor3es for unRaid, at the expense of your VM, but VM is smoother, I'd take that as a win. Have a look at this thread if you haven't seen it - some good info and tweaks here; You also haven't mentioned if you have any dockers or plugins running? If so, these will need some resources as well. Also, be aware that copy operations to the array require unRaid to calculate parity. This is an intensive process that likely explains some of the CPU max you observe (but not all). You can alleviate this by correctly configuring the cache disk and offloading to the array at a more convenient time (middle of the night, or whenever you're not gaming). You might know all this, of course, but just in case.
  18. Hi. Came here from a post on reddit. I had a look at your diagnostics there, and there are a few oddities - mainly the 'Pod' and 'Tumbler' VM XML files appear to be truncated, so I cannot see how the GPUs are assigned. Also, from analysing this, I think you might be looking in the wrong place, or at the wrong thing. Your logs are filled with BTRFS and disk errors. Rather than thinking the second GPU/VM is causing the crash / disk errors, have you considered that the disk errors might be causing the VM crash? It looks like your 'domains' share (where the VM images are stored) is set to cache prefer and your cache is BTRFS . If there's a disk error, your VM files could corrupted and cause the VM to crash. In my experience, BTRFS has been a very poor option for cache file system (two catastrophic crashes resulting in data loss). My next step here would be to reconfigure my cache to be a single drive with XFS (preferably a different physical drive on a different controller to eliminate possible issues with a bad disk, controller or cable)). hen I'd re-create my VMs ensuring the data is on this safer single drive and see where it goes from there. Also, check out the blog link in my footer for some tips on GPU config. It looks like you've done a lot of them already, but you might find a nugget!.
  19. Do this. be sure to include if you are booting unRaid in UEFI or Legacy mode, and if switching this makes any difference to you.
  20. Check out the link in my sig. you might find some tips there. was the bios updated for mining optimization? If yes, you might need to roll it back, or pass through a bios rom file.
  21. Check out the link in my sig - I've written up a cheatsheet of sorts to help with this kind of thing.
  22. For future reference, @Masterbob221's problem was he was adding the multifunction tag to the source element GPU video dev node in the XML, when it needed to be added to the virtual address line.
  23. Great news on the iommu groups! You don’t have an os install image defined. as you are setting up the vm afresh, you need to point to an install iso to get the os installed
  24. I had a quick look and don’t see anything obvious. Plus it’s my turn to get some sleep! try some of the steps above. Also, try switching off ALL the usb passthrough s, and see if you can then edit xml. If yes, switch on usb one at a time and use a process of elimination to figure out if one of these is the case of the problem if you don’t figure it out, and no one else can help, we can do another discord session tomorrow.
  25. You cannot change the bios for an existing vm. You need to create a new vm with the changed settings. Since you have the same boot issue in vnc, that rules out the gpu as the source of the problem. It’s very difficult to read the specific windows error your encountering,, but if this runs on different hardware, it’s likely something to do with part of your vm config that’s specific to your old system. starting fresh with a new vm on this new hardware should point you in the right direction. for iommu, have you checked your system bios to be sure there’s no configuration there that you need to turn on to enable iommu?
