  1. Have an weird one here. ASRock MB (890FX Deluxe 4) that has IOMMU and the AMD 1090T processor that I previously ran ESXi on. I am making the switch to unRaid w/ native Xen. If I boot unRaid, everything works fine. (Syslog attached "unRaid-Boot.txt). If I boot Xen, I get a whole bunch of failures related to the hard drives and when it finally makes it to the unraid webgui most of my drives are missing. (Syslog attached "Xen-Boot.txt). Any ideas? Thanks in advanced! unRaid-Boot.txt Xen-Boot.txt

  3. I threw a new 3TB red drive in for a new parity drive. Been running for over 24 hours (will take a while I know) but the Web site is unresponsive. I can still ssh in. Is there a way to check the parity sync status from the command line? Thanks! Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2
  4. Good Morning! I was attempting a little experiment to have my unRaid shares show in my WHS 2011 Shared Folders. I don't care if they're simply another directory in the WHS Share, or if they replace the share itself (probably a directory is better), but I can't seem to make it happen. - Creating a network drive doesn't work - Can't put a shortcut in the folder I saw some info on iSCSI, but not sure how that applies. Has anyone ever attempted this? Thanks in advance! - Cha
  5. I have four in my array... no problems. Just make sure you preclear and set the MBR properly. All good!
  6. Thanks for this! I just loaded it, and you're correct, the boot is super fast! So my question is this, do I continue to install things to my BOOT Flash Drive, or the VMDK? For instance, do I put unMenu on the VMDK or BOOT drive? The VMDK is at 5b12. I'm using 5b13 on my old BOOT USB. If I want to upgrade to 5b14, where do I update it on the VMDK or the BOOT USB? Thanks!
  7. It does. I use it, works great Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
  8. A few red flags with your motherboard: - no onboard video - Realtek 8111E NIC (known to be incompatible with all but the newest unRAID betas) The upside is that you have so many PCI and PCIe ports on that thing that you can easily add a cheap video card (PCI would be better, but PCIe would be OK too) and an Intel PCI NIC and overcome both of those limitations. A PCI video card should run about $10 on ebay, and an Intel PCI NIC can be had for $25 - $30 on Newegg. Your CPU is massively overpowered for unRAID, but it will certainly work. If you plan to run any CPU-intensive add-ons such as video encoding (handbrake) or transcoding (airvideo), then the CPU would be at least partially used. If not, then you might want to consider getting a cheap single or dual core AM3 CPU such as the Sempron 145 and putting your hexcore CPU to better use (or selling it). A smaller CPU will save a bit of power as well. You have 8 onboard SATA ports, meaning that you could add two Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 cards for a nice even total of 24 ports. Sounds like a great plan to me! Raj, thanks for the reply. Forgot to mention I'd be using a Zotac GeForce 8400GS 256MB DDR2 Low Profile 667MHz/1400MHz PCI-Express Graphics Card ZT-84MEG5M-HSL for the video card and an Intel PWLA8391GTBLK PRO/1000 GT Desktop Network Adapter for the LAN. I have slowly been consolidating a lot of functions into unRaid, SAB, Sickbeard, Handbrake (could even through some VM type action on there), etc. I realize the processors is probably overkill, but if it's just sitting there... right?
  9. Good morning! I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on the 24 Drive Beast Build, but I have an excellent MB & Processor I'd like to repurpose. I have the: - ASRock 890FX Deluxe4 AM3 AMD 890FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157208 - AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz 6 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor HDT90ZFBGRBOX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103849 Will this combo work with the 24 Drive Beast Build instead of the MB & Processor ID'd there? 24 Drive Beast (rackmount) unRAID currently supports a maximum of 22 drives, but you can add more drives outside the parity protected array via SNAP Mobo: SUPERMICRO MBD-X8SIL-F-O CPU: Intel i3 540 Clarkdale (the i3 530 and i3 550 are fine too, choose based on price and availability) RAM: Kingston 4GB DDR3 1333 PSU: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W Case: Norco 4224 SATA Expansion Cards: Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 8-Port SAS/SATA Add-on Card x 2 SATA2 Serial ATA II PCI-Express RAID Controller Card (Silicon Image SIL3132) x 1 Cables: House Brand Molex 79576-3007 Mini SAS / SATA Cable x 2 1m 30AWG Internal Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male to Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male Cable x 4 No SATA Cables needed Fanplate: Norco 120mm fanplate *optional Fans: (replacing the stock fans is optional, but recommended if quiet performance is desired) Nexus PWM Series D12SL-12PWM 120mm Case Fan x 3 *optional ARCTIC COOLING ACF8 Pro PWM 80mm Case Fan *optional Hard Drives: Green drives (5400 rpm or 5900 rpm), such as WD Green, Hitachi CoolSpin, Samsung EcoGreen, and Seagate LP Cost: $1090 (without the optional fans/fanplate) + shipping + cost of hard drives Capacity: 40 TB + optional 2 TB cache + optional 4 TB extra space via SNAP Expandability: None. 10. Good comments, thank you! I'm inclined to leave it as well at this point, just wanted to float the idea out there and see if I was way off base. Appreciate it!
  11. Good Morning, Long story short: I jumped through hoops to get unRaid working with ESXi. I have it running, but it's not perfect. My reason for going with ESXi was to allow Sage Server to run on a Windows VM. Now that I built a new HTPC, I could move Sage Server to that and I really don't have a need for the Windows VM as unRaid can do all the rest "natively" (SABNZB, SickBeard, etc.) My questions is, should I remove the added layer of ESXi and just go native with unRaid? Thanks! - Cha
  12. I have 16 gigs of RAM, that should be fine for unRaid and one VM, correct? I am really betwixt and between on this one. ESXi still seems like a hack. VirtualBox may be a hack as well, but which is better: - long term stability - ability to recover after failure - flexibility in configuration Appreciate any inputs you have! 13. Sorry for the seemly basic question, but would VirtualBox in unRaid be a better(?) solution that what I'm currently doing, which is run ESXi, then have a VM for unRAID, one for Win7 & one for MythBuntu? Reason I ask is, ESXi is kind of a hack w/ unRaid. There is no real easy way to backup the VMs, so I used to run a WHS VM for local backups, and something got corrupted and the whole VM was lost. If I spun my setup around and put unRaid down as the base (instead of ESXi), then put a W7 VM & WHS or MythBuntu VM on top, I could back up my VMs and hopefully the whole thing would be more stable. What do you think? Thanks in advance! - Cha
  14. Good evening! I just added a cache drive that's a RDM through the Motherboard. As such, temps & spin down don't work, and I'm okay with that. The question is, can I disable hdparm for that drive? My log is filling up fast with errors like: Jul 26 22:37:21 REBEL-DATA emhttp: shcmd (1460): /usr/sbin/hdparm -y /dev/sdf >/dev/null (Drive related) Jul 26 22:37:37 REBEL-DATA emhttp: _shcmd: shcmd (1460): exit status: 52 (Other emhttp) hdparm works for the external array I'm passing through via IOMMMU, so I'd like to not kill all of hdparm, but just for /dev/sdf Any ideas? Thanks!
  15. Great work, thank you!!! Anyone else getting the "Your UNRAR version is not recommended, get it from http://www.rarlab.com/rar_add.htm" comment in SABnzbd? Should I just ignore it? EDIT: Disregard, went away after a reboot. Thanks!
  16. Sorry for the question, but how do I install this through ESXi? I don't want to mess up my unRaid. Thank you!
  17. Stradle, looks like that backplane isn't supported by ESXi. When you're in vSphere, under Configuration -> Storage -> Devices, do you see your hard drives? I'm going to assume no, based of of your fdisk -l report. Does your motherboard support VT-d? Can you pass through the backplanes direct to the unRaid VM? I'm actually in the process of writing up my guide for getting unRaid to work in ESXi, which varies slightly from this guide as mine will focus more on passed through hardware. I should have it published in a day or two, maybe it will help.
  18. Does this work with 4.6 by chance? Thanks!
  19. Anyone test this? I just bought one to try, but I wanted to know if anyone else has before me. Thanks!
  20. I am using that same Rosewill enclosure and Sil3132 card. Works fine in unRaid. Can't speak to the speeds yet, I'm going to start transferring data over next weekend. PreClear was fine, and the array gets setup and initialized properly, so I know unRaid is good.
  21. Good Morning! I've been following this thread for some time now and thought I'd post my current status and way ahead. Intent: Get unRaid, WHS & Win 7 running well on ESXi. Current Equipment: AMD Anthlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz, Asus M4A78-E, 4GB RAM, WHS, (2) 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black Drives, (3) 1TB HITACHI Deskstar 7200 RPM Drives, Sil3132 eSATA Card connected to Rosewill RSV-S4-X External Enclosure with (4) 2TB Western Digital EARS Drives (properly pre-cleared & aligned). Current Status: unRaid setup, and working fine when running directly on the server -- NOTE: this is without going through ESXi. The Sil3132 Bios only sees the first 2TB Drive, but once unRaid is boot up, it sees all 4 drives connected. I've loaded ESXi onto an unused HD and I can boot in ESXi fine and load up vSphere on my desktop, properly configure VMs, etc. Using the instructions in this post, I have created a vmdk of my unRaid install, as well as using the boot from CD Rom Image to load the USB directly connected, both work. HOWEVER, once in unRaid, I can get not get it to see the Sil3132 or attached drives. I created a new ESXi install image using a custom OEM.tgz that has support for Sil3132 and now ESXi sees the Sil3132 card, but only the first 2TB hard drive is recognized, just like in the Sil3132 bios. So at this point, I could only setup the first drive with RDM, which does not jive with unRaid as its configured without ESXi. Solution: If I were to get one of the new AMD MBs that supports IOMMU (some mentioned here already), a good list of confirmed working IOMMU motherboards can be found here: http://forums.amd.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=383&threadid=134410 (6th Post Down). I have also confirmed separately with the VM-Help.com forums (http://www.vm-help.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=2758) that a MB that support IOMMU will just pass through the Sil3132 card, and if it's passed through to the unRaid VM, if unRaid natively recognizing it and the drives attached, I should be good to go. Here & Now: So before I pull the trigger on purchasing a new motherboard, I wanted to bounce this approach off the community. Am I missing anything? Is the MB purchase necessary? If I can get ESXi to see the Sil3132 & the first HD, am I overlooking something that will allow it to see the other connected drives in the enclosure? Thank you in advance for any comments/suggestions and I have to echo the previous comment, this is a great thread in a great forum! - Cha
  22. Good evening! I have unRaid Pro setup, ran preclear_drives.sh on my drives, have the array ready (without parity until I copy over all my WHS files), and my question is this. On WHS I have the following directories: BluRay --> Individual Movie Folders DVD --> Individual Movie Folders Games --> NES ----> Individual Game Files --> SNES ----> Individual Game Files Music -->iTunes ----->Music Library --------->Artists -------------->Albums RecordedTV (no directories, just files) Software ---Various Directories Videos --TV ---->Individual Show Folders --Movies ---->Individual Movie Folders --Workout ---->Individual Workout Folders I know WHS is putting those folders that I have duplication turned on, on multiple disks. It's also spreading the files out over multiple drives, of which I have no control over, nor do I care. They're all the same size, make, model, etc. In other words, the BluRay share can have files on all four of my drives, but with unRaid, I want to make sure that BluRay --> Movie Name --> Movie Files, all the movie files are on one drive so there is no stuttering. But beyond that, I don't care. Should I create the shares and set my split level to 1? Would that accomplish what I want, letting unRaid worry about where to put the files, just group whole movie files together? Thanks in advance for your help!
  23. What do you get with fdisk -l -u /dev/sdX The "-u" option will let you see the starting sector number. If sector 64, you are 4k aligned. What version of the preclear script are you using? type: preclear_disk.sh -v to see the version number. Newest version as of this post is .9.9d Joe L Joe, thank you! They are on sector 64. Version was .9.9a... I've updated to the latest. thanks again!
