  1. ...then maybe he'll add torrent client on unRAID
  2. I can seed indefinitely too. (erm... I mean a torrent) I'd give you space in an owned server too, but things have changed quite a bit the last year (off topic - won't go into it). I am not sure I'd follow the advice of the guys and host Lime-Technology in an "in house" server though. Mostly because it needs involvement you cannot give right now (and in fact because we need your involvement to be purely on updating/evolving unRAID - until you hire some nice co-devs).

    Why ReiserFS?

That would be an interesting rename. BTW Weebo, all my (I mean ALL) my LS120 floppies died sooner or later (usually "sooner"). I was a fan ("forced" in fact as the company I was working back then had quite a few such drives - standard on some Compaq at the time), but the fact is a fact. I also hate Zip technology and never got why it survived and evolved. ALSO I hate tape drives. Normal DAT and (ultra expensive for some unknown reason) DLT were never a trusted backup media (and for a reason as I have quite a few terror stories). So what this makes me?

    Why ReiserFS?

In defense of you people that vote for change, I can say that if RFS was better than ext2/3, then RFS would be the standard FS of many distros - which is not the case.

    Why ReiserFS?

Different people. Even in real life, I wouldn't have a problem using something that is GOOD, because the person who created is bad. (in fact society also does the exact opposite that is much worse: uses something bad, even though the person who created it is good) In any case, if its going to Ethics, I still don't get it. I create the Elixir of Youth and then go and rape 20 women. I'd sure deserve do die, but this makes the Elixir any worse? Nope. Don't I deserve the money I'd get (or my family) for selling it? Hell, yeah! Would you not buy it? (and let's not expand this in a discussion concerning if you'd buy an Elixir of Youth anyway) Sorry just don't get it. Different people I guess. Von Porsche AFAIK was a close friend of Hitler. Maybe we shouldn't ever buy anything Volkswagen, Porsche (even key rings) etc.? Back to the (main) topic, an evaluation of switching to a new filesystem (or allowing one or more extra than RFS) would also include the question "is it worth the troube?" for the developer. Let's not forget this.

"It's just that the windows too I want to use is insufficient for my needs." Sorry didn't get this phrase.

    Why ReiserFS?

I get the spirit of what your saying but those examples are truly horrible and have no place here. Why I heard HitlerFS has nice recovery tools and manages to reuse space quite effectively. Note that since I am Greek and my country suffered both Italian and ON TOP of that, 3rd Reich occupation and whole villages got wiped in WWII, I should be sensitive too. But I wouldn't worry with such examples. Humanity has (hopefully) matured quite a bit to be able to make fun with its own mistakes of the past. (interestingly enough - my job's closest business partners are German and Jewish!) I would use a HitlesFS or a KKKFS if it was any good, but I would probably call it "that filesystem" to forget about the name and creators and be more politically correct. Ah... and would try to find a pirated version without any guilt. --- Indeed the question remains. What would Tom choose today? I wouldn't bother with a switch unless we loose something really vital some other more modern FS gives and would really make unRAID better. A good place to note here (again) that before finding out about unRAID, I too had a quite relative idea with Tom, only it would be "low level" FS agnostic (and even mix and hide under the cover of the top layer FS). As long as an FS driver is there... ...Sure would make things more difficult with far more variables to take care... but things could slowly move towards that target and maybe unRAID 2010 should be that way.
  8. Go for the better already-less-clocked CPU - which is also more "customizable" and greener than your current. After all, like the guy above said, tomorrow the second core could be exploited, you never know. Are you sure your mobo supports it though? Ah, btw "D" generation (and even more, Celerons) REALLY suck (and they sacked from the first day they were introduced). If Intel didn't come up with Core2, we would probably all be using AMD now.

It would help much if Tom added it somewhere in the page, and/or people started mentioning it in their sigs and of course wiki.

    unRAID needs a logo

way too "80ies" I think the logo should be that: a logo - and something easy for someone to draw (maybe not exactly but close) on a piece of paper. Smth catchy. Maybe something like bibendum. (tyres... disks)

    unRAID needs a logo

NASUser you must be in my mind. This is what came in my mind (your first pic) when I saw Equilibrium's graphic. Like the disk blocks forming the letters, or something.
  12. you probably get the title until further update my father (about your age) doesn't know what RAID or NAS is
  13. Thanks Tom! Thought I should reply because I am probably the most rookie father here (in fact since March 31, one day after my own birthday).
  14. upgrade done without a hitch - whole thing probably took 30" thank you Tom and thanks for ntpd too
  15. I am all in, BUT, I'd like a way to mount (and decrypt) single disks on a Windows machine too. (in case of emergency) (btw from the subject I thought the thread was related to Tom's whereabouts :P )
  16. agreed, ftp is much more secure and of course minimum requirement for ANY remote access is that you set up passwords (esp. for root) the problem with the casual user is that ftp is installed alright, but not really configured (in any useful way)
  17. Where is the roadmap? I didn't realize how this was interesting, until I understood that you in fact "hide" behind your on board SATA. Definitely interesting. I think they sell it very expensively though.
  18. I am not sure how Rob explained anything (no insult Rob). To access unRAID remotely depends on what you mean by access. If you need terminal access, you probably need to forward (from your router) port 23 to your unRAID IP. If you need the web interface, you will need to forward port 80 to your unRAID IP. If you need to access the shares, it is more compicated maybe, but you can start by trying to forward port 139. For the first two, is very easy to also hide them behind different ports (a "high" port). For example you "hide" telnet behind port 12345, by telling your router to port forward port 12345 to port 23 on you unRAID IP. Then you access by telnet realIP:12345 (format depending on telnet client - I suggest PuTTY too). For the web even simpler. You do the same trick and then just type in your (remote) explorer: http://realIP:12346 For the third, someone else might help and tell us if it is possible to access a share using a different port. If you keep the standard port, then open a window in your remote PC and just type \\realIP and your shares should show up (not instantly). If your IP is dynamic, you might need to setup a dyndns account (google it). Now if you have a VPN connection (you probably don't) you don't need to do anything and you just access everything remotely (from the remote VPN location - not from anywhere) by using your normal internal unRAID IP (or even netbios name if your router is smart enough).
  19. My first was a CBM64. But I have a connection with Spectrum, in many ways, the most "nostalgic" being, that before my parents got me a CBM64 (with the excuse that we would do business on it), I had a leaflet with a full size picture of a spectrum (the old rubber key one), under the glass of my desk, practicing typing :D (because we all know the weird key combinations on the Spectrum)... I still have my CBM64 and two of my Amigas. To bring this a bit on topic (erm... "on forum" at least), one of the reasons I needed unRAID was that my emulation needs grew very large.

    unRAID vs FlexRAID

in fact currently flexRAID is more of a smart backup (flexBACKUP?) - someone could make a nice mix of flexRAID and unRAID and get something interesting
  21. by all means, good luck to you man BTW, I first touched linux when it was kernel going to 0.9-something (16 years ago?), but I am waaaaaaaaaay back from some of the real experts here. (to be honest it looked really unattractive back then... I already had a GUI enabled computer - read: Amiga - so... ...well don't blame me, I was young and didn't know of the snowball effect linux would have in the future... the story of my life)
  22. NLS

    unRAID vs FlexRAID

well it certainly is interesting maybe it's even what delays 4.3 * or made Tom disappear (ok bad joke ) * in fact 4.3 is delayed trying to find out a better name for the infamous "badly named button" (a slightly better joke)
  23. Wow, I remember the time this was the answer to everything. (it was about the same era where I could use that same phrase) Things have gone a long way since then and became much more complex and "specialized". I hope by "I am programmer" you really mean, "I can handle linux really well and even build whatever is missing". Good luck to you.
