  1. NCQ setting makes negligible difference for me also. You have one of the worst cases I’ve seen, make sure the SAS2LP is on one of the top two slots, in my testing the problem is much worse on any slot that goes through the DMI, in your case the bottom slot. It's in the first slot (x8). Actually, opentoe is flashing an H310 to replace my SAS2LP.
  2. Force NCQ disabled=NO does not appear to have much effect. Looks like unraid-tunables "Best Bang" settings didn't help much either.
  3. I was under the impression that this was a problem with the 64 bit driver and LimeTech had little or no control over the problem. Wouldn't SuperMicro(?) have to write a new driver? I admit not knowing much about this sort of thing. Very possible I've misunderstood the whole issue but my fear is that SuperMicro may never get around to updating the driver.
  4. I'm thinking about doing the same with a M1015. Looks like the SAS2LP's are selling for about $80-90US on eBay. I'll probably sell mine there and make back most of the cost of the M1015.
  5. The H200 is also working (with vertical connectors). http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=342-2604 And these will work without needing to be flashed?
  6. I just flashed mine on the mb I use for unRAID. I used a freedos usb key to do the flash. Did not use Windows @ all. Are there any kind of instructions for this? I'm way out of my element. I know almost as much about DOS as I do about Windows.
  7. Thanks. Are you saying that this card should work without needing to be flashed?
  8. Buying anything used is a bit of a gamble, no doubt. You may want to look at a new Dell Perc H310. I think @Opentoe has posted about good results with them. You flash them to work as a m1015 when flashed. They are a bit cheaper. People recommend you use the fw from Dell. That said, I know a lot of people who have purchased m1015s from eBay and been perfectly happy (myself included). If you buy from someone selling a lot, they are usually pulled new or near new from servers where they are not needed. The one I got looked brand new and I have had zero issues. I'm sure there are quite a few options if I had some way to flash the cards, but I don't have any windows machines. Normally I don't miss them but without one I'm looking at getting out-of-the-box controllers or pre flashed. Unless there is some way to flash one of these cards on a Mac? I've been looking, but all the instructions I've found involve Windows. I can run Windows on a Mac but I just can't see buying the license just to do the flash.
  9. Sounds like the pre flashed M1015's might be a better option. Not really crazy about buying used controllers though. Is there a better out of the box option? PCIe v2 maybe?
  10. How much slower is the SASLP? I know they're only rated at 3Gb/s but I'm not sure that means parity checks would be at half speed. I've been looking for a good out-of-the-box controller. Don't have any Windows machines/licenses that I can use to flash a card.
  11. If anything, 6.1.3 increased my speed by a good margin on my SAS2LP controller. Shaved an hour off of the parity check times and brought me back to the times that I had before the pre-emptible kernel was introduced in 6.0b14d. I wish I could say the same. Average speed: 22.8 MB/s Looks like it'll take 50+ hours to complete on 17TB.
  12. I'm not very good at this, but it's my understanding that this could be used to run as a cron job with a directory specified. Not sure how to set it up though?
  13. thx. for your input. got a few questions here: do you use a physical disk per share for best performance? for how long do you already do time machine backups into these shares? how many files are stored into such a share already? could you have a look/check, how long it takes for the mac to mount it's time machine share? I've seen a few recommendations to use a single disk for each share, but it seemed like a bit of a waste to me and it was easier just to use the complete array (no cache). I just set a limit to the share size for each one. I've been using these shares for about a year or so. I can probably get a rough idea of the mount time later this weekend. Looks like about 30.5 seconds to mount.
  14. I use my unraid to backup all my macs (4) via time machine. Never tried it with a single share though. I use a separate share for each backup and haven't had any issues for the past year or so. Can't say I've ever actually measured the mount times but there never seemed to be much of a delay.
  15. I don't think you really need to clone one USB key to the other if you don't want too. All you really need is a clone backup on a desktop computer so that you can restore v5 onto that USB key. Might be a good idea to create a backup off your array regardless. Just to be safe.
  16. So you would recommend the Helium drives for parity? They run sooo expensive. Or maybe dual parity is the sum of both drives (2x4TB=8TB)? Doesn't seem like it would work that way, but I really know nothing about it.
  17. I use the E3 with Plex without any issues. I seldom have more than 2 clients connected at the same time but have never really loaded the CPU much. I think it's rated for 4 simultaneous Plex connections.
  18. Have you looked at the Server Layout Plugin. Not quite the same but I think it's better in some ways. More customization.
  19. Just deleting the data doesn't really destroy the data. It's all still there and can easily be resurrected by someone with a little skill. To actually destroy the data you need to overwrite it with something else, which preclear does. Depending on how many drives and the sizes this could take several weeks, but it's the only safe way if you want to protect yourself. If you really don't care who sees whatever is on the shares (very bad idea IMO) then here's some fairly good instructions- http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ#How_do_I_remove_a_User_Share.3F You basically delete all the folders/files including hidden and then delete the name of the user share in the webgui and select save.
  20. Yes, but the connected screen would be in another room 75' away and the main reason to use VNC would be so that everyone else could be watching their shows while I was doing whatever with Kodi. I suppose with the right GPU card I could disconnect the monitor from my computer and hook it to the GPU and maybe use IPMI(?) to connect a keyboard to Kodi. Or maybe I can pass thru a USB port? But then I'd also have to disconnect a keyboard and hook it to the unRaid. I don't really see that happening. I'd get tired of crawling underneath my desk pretty quickly. The primary reason I was looking at Openelec was so that I could take the MacMini that I currently use for Kodi and use it for a network server instead. The lack of VNC support would be a deal killer though I think. If I have to buy a GPU, HDMI over Ethernet adapters, ethernet cables, new monitor and a new keyboard the price tag gets so high that it would be cheaper to just get another Mini from eBay. Haven't really decided yet. I can see other advantages to connecting a monitor and keyboard to the unraid. IPMI is a real pain IMO. Just not really in my budget right now.
  21. I quit Kodi. Download the new dmg file and launch it. Drag the Kodi app to the "Applications" folder. Then I launch Kodi. This is all done via VNC usually, with a mouse. I also like to check "Recently Added" videos to be sure the artwork is decent. This is the main thing I use VNC for. I hate getting ready to watch a movie and finding out the scraper has mis-matched it. Just an OCD thing I guess. Obviously the same video file is going to play regardless, but all the info will be wrong and it'll drive me crazy throughout the movie. For me it would be very hard to operate Kodi without a monitor. I would always be wanting to know what it looked like. Ok, so you install Kodi on top of another OS (like Ubuntu or otherwise), then you use a VNC server inside that OS to access the OS. With OpenELEC I think you can do the same thing by downloading a VNC add-on for OpenELEC. I haven't done this myself yet, so I'd need to look into it more, but seems like it should be doable. Yes. It's a MacMini. It works great but it's kind of a waste since most of the features of MacOS are never used. That's the main reason I was looking at running Kodi from my unRaid. It would let me put the Mini to use as a network server. It could probably run Kodi and Yosemite Server both simultaneously, but with a core 2 duo processor I'm afraid there might occasionally be issues. Is there anyway I could test the openelec VM and VNC addon without buying a GPU?

  23. You cannot use VNC at all with the OE VM. It requires a GPU. There are, however, no updates that you would perform inside the VM. Updates are issued in the form of new VM template images, which you can download through the unRAID web interface. Once a new version is downloaded, you simply stop the VM, edit the VM, and change the template version, then start the VM. That said, even if the VM needed to be updated using GPU assignment, I don't think any HTPC solutions offer a workaround to this either. I'm not quite sure I follow what you're saying? I would have to create a new VM anytime I want to install a new addon or change my settings? When I was talking about using VNC I really meant that it would be for running updates and modifications on my video library. I usually like to check the artwork for new movies and sometimes the scrapers don't scrape the correct info. The remotes won't let me see the actual display. Might just stick with what I have now. The HDMI would be about 75'. Probably too long for a high speed cable which would mean a set of HDMI to cat6 converters. The cost adds up fast. Would probably end up with a price tag higher than the htpc's original cost.
