  1. why would you not just add another ssd and keep the data drives as you have them? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Hey guys, Got a server grade mobo, CPU and ram available in the land down under The good: SuperMicro X8SIA-F (has IPMI) ATX Intel Xeon X3450 32GB Kingston ECC DDR3 The bad: Some onboard Sata port damage - only to the plastic, doesn't affect usage No HSF included. The Price Looking for $350AUD - Willing to negotiate with shipping etc Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. 1U Servers get very loud and are extremely limiting on options. Personally I wouldn't use anything smaller than a 2U. SuoerMicro do a 2U with up to 8 drives in the front, proper PSU redundancy etc, plus you can add a bigger amount of linecards X7 is quite old now too, and the CPU's are 10years old. DDR2 ECC is rare now, so replacing a failed component would be expensive. I doubt the X7 has SATA3, so limited to SATA2 which isn't an issue if only using spinners, but ssd would suffer. Honestly, for what you want, I'd look at a used Dell R710 LFF. Have you checked if the X7 board can handle 64bit LBA? Ie Drives > 2.2TB Just some thoughts to consider :-) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  7. Regarding the Optane, I would want LT to chime in as I personally haven't used that type of tech yet. Intel 750 SSD are supported to the best of my knowledge as they are fully compliant with NVMe, unlike the Micron P320h ones I got given which aren't Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Depends on the drive and version of UnRaid you plan on running them on. Could possibly elaborate on make/model you have or are planning on using? Cheers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. There's actually 2 editions of the 120mm fan wall now I found out The old standard one, and the new one with hot-swap 120mm fan cages which I was lucky to get with mine Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. So an 8i will have 2 internal SFF8087 ports, and the 8E will have 2 external SAS connectors on the PCI Bracket Can you try remove the new card physically from the server? It may be that the two cards are too far apart in firmware to be playing nice in the one setup. I run my LSI cards on P20 across the board, some people prefer P14 as well. If you can try removing the new card, and for curiosity, post a photo of the cards too Cheers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. If you can pickup a H220 that would be the best bet for software raid control Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. Your HP1810-24G does not support 10G connections via its SFP Slots. If you were to do a back-to-back link between your ESXi Host and the UnRaid server, you would need to put it on a separate subnet to ensure that the routing isn't affected. Using the Mellanox cards should be straight forward, especially from the VMWare end, you'll just need to setup a new VMKernel port on the new subnet When you do the subnet on the two servers, try to avoid putting in a default gateway as this can impact the routing table significantly Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. Without getting roasted, some people use SATA to Molex adaptors for this kinda thing Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. These are some of the quirks I was talking about, along with the other parts like the powerdown control and smart not working 100% Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Yeah, as I said, I never used the P410i in an UnRaid setup, I used it for 5 days in a ZFS FreeNAS before I started to hate the card, and just started using H310/M1015's Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. Yeah. Also, latest firmware for the P410i will support 64 logical volumes with the 256mb cache installed Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. Wrong. P410i can do single drive Raid-0's. This will work for Software NAS's such as UnRaid or ZFS based systems Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. P410i should work, only thing is you will need to put each disk into its own Raid0/JBOD to pass it to the OS, is it's a full blown RAID card as opposed to an IT Mode LSI card which is a pure HBA @jonnie.black and others may be able to comment more of the reliability of the card, but I don't see why it shouldn't work, just some SMART/ATA commands may not pass through to the disk depending how the controller feels about it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Just check the R710 layout first, some are low profile rear, some are full height Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Wow, I could mail one from Australia to you for less than that Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. but as Jonnie said, it will work, but if you can afford the better card, it will give you more flexibility for other drives if you install more (SSD's or case-transplant) Just my opinion
  22. Controller Card: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/IBM-ServeRaid-M1015-46M0861-SAS-SATA-PCI-e-RAID-Controller-9220-8i-/192161125988?hash=item2cbdb21664:g:Zg0AAOSw5UZY9Jmk Try to not buy them from China, but thats mainly due to a lot of them being copies/clones Breakout Cables: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mini-SAS-4i-SFF-8087-36P-36-Pin-Male-to-4-SATA-7-Pin-Splitter-Adapter-Cable-OK-/261775936632?epid=927974302&hash=item3cf30fcc78:g:pr4AAOSwAL9UcuX9 Search Terms in eBay: Controller: IBM M1015, IBM M1115 Dell H200i, Dell H310 LSI 9201-8i, LSI 9211-8i Cables: SFF-8087 to SATA breakout -- Do not get reverse breakout cables Should be sub 100USD for the lot, here in AUS you can get them a lot from server tear downs. Hope this helps
  23. You got a free i9? Umm ok Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. Don't do it. Just get a M1015/H200/H310 or other LSI 9201/9211 etc card Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
