  1. That CPU does not support hardware passthrough for virtualization. Real virtualization can't really be done on a 'budget' unless you're looking at second hand hardware, which is an option. There are vendors on eBay that sell reconditioned server hardware that will work for what you want to do. However, to get new RAM, CPU, motherboard, controller card for your disks and a PSU if your PSU isn't supported by the motherboard you're basically looking at a whole new server. You're looking at probably $650 to $700 to get the hardware you need. If you want to do virtualization you're better off saving your money until you have some saved to afford the hardware you need.
  2. It's really about $7 more because Microcenter charges for shipping unless you live near one where you can pick it up. Shipping on the Newegg drive is free. If I hadn't already ordered the Newegg one though I'd get it. It's worth the extra $7 bucks for the warranty.
  3. Nice price on a good drive. I've had one in my server now for about a year. I'll pick one up.
  4. Another vote to either get rid of the tabbed setup or make it optional at the least. There can only be one cache disk or boot drive. Having a separate tabs for each of these makes no sense. And if you remove those two tabs you might as well remove the array operations tab along with it.
  5. MY 2 cents. Dropping AFP would kill my use of unRaid. Some Apps I and others use everyday just won't work or work correctly with SMB... And not everyone is willing to upgrade to the latest OSX since doing so could cost thousands in software upgrades and it takes Apple and Developers too long to get Apps working the way they should. What software are you using that won't run under 10.9?
  6. Is recommend Chrome Battery batteries. They can be had for a great price with free shipping on Amazon. I've been using them for years to replace my UPS batteries.
  7. Yes, quite a few people on here have hardware with that SATA chipset.
  8. Yeah, I think the Xfce desktop environment is really nice looking. Try it out. What problem did you have with Lubuntu?
  9. Why do you need to use Mint? Can't you use another Debian based distro that doesn't require 3D acceleration like Lubuntu or Xubuntu?
  10. This may have been addressed elsewhere in the thread but is a mobile version in the works? I'm considering switching back to the new lime-tech webgui for that feature alone.
  11. You're not understanding what this plugin is. This is not a plugin that allows you to run VMWare inside of unraid and create VMs. This is for installing the VMWare companion tools for people that are running unraid inside a VM in a VMWare ESXi environment. i.e. We're all running unraid inside a VM on a server.
  12. Intel is going to use a lot less power at idle as well. Noctua fans are pricey but totally worth it. Nothing else on the market can move as much air that quietly. I replaced all the fans in my case with them and it was absolutely worth it.
  13. If $43 bucks is going to break the bank then go for it. But AMD is really a waste of money these days. They are totally uncompetitive in terms of performance per dollar and power consumption.
  14. Not sure why you'd want something like this over just using controller cards and a motherboard with a normal number of ports. It would definitely be cheaper than a board like this.
  15. Agree that keeping AFP is necessary until Apple makes Time Machine work with SMB. Time Machine support is pretty much a must have feature of any modern NAS.
  16. Hello friend I know thread is bit old but were you able to build such an 24 drive system? It seems very exciting to me so can you provide some information? Waiting for reply thanks in advance:) Would it even matter? The hardware would be three years out of date. You're better off just creating a new thread and asking for advice on low power hardware.
  17. I'd go for either the Supermicro X9 or X10 series boards and a Xeon E3 v2 or v3 depending on which board you go with.
  18. +1 for dropping v3. If people's equipment doesn't support v4 they'll just have to use samba. I'm also in favor of making this change in unraid version 5 as well as version 6.
  19. Any reason you're going with that tower case and the drive cages when you could get something like the Norco 4224? With that the you get 24 bays for drives and it'll cost you about $75 less. Since you're planning to virtualize those extra bays could come in handy for other VMs you may run. For instance, I run an OpenIndiana VM that runs a 4 disk ZFS pool that I use as the datastore, via NFS, for all my VMs.
  20. If you can afford it, it's worth going with the hardware that will support virtualization if you decide to go that way down the road, even if you don't want to do it now. For you fans, how important is noise level? I'd go with these fans if you want something quiet. I use these in my 4224 and they are extremely quiet but still move a ton of air. A bit pricey but absolutely worth it. 80mm: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006GD30UC/ 120mm: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006GDDV2E/
  21. Go with an Intel based system. They may cost slightly more but AMD is just so far behind in terms of performance it's worth the small cost. Intel systems are going to be more power efficient as well. Plus that AMD has a powerful GPU built in that will just be completely wasted and sucking down electricity.
  22. Kingston Value RAM will work, however, 1333 is slower than the chip is capable of. Get 1600. Price should be very close or the same.
  23. I'm going to replace my last 2TB WD Green with this. Believe it or not, used working 2TB WD Green drives still go for $60-70 on eBay so it actually should only cost me $125 after selling the green and PayPal/eBay fees.
  24. There is it... "Other" was minimized for me too and I over looked it. Thanks!
  25. Why was the lounge section of the forum removed in the forum reorganization? There were lots of good discussions that took place in that section of the forum.
