  1. My current drives are Seagate ironwolf 8TB and Seagate archive 8TB. Just to make my decision a little bit clear. Lets say that i have a tower case able to host 24 drives, and i also have a motherboard, cpu, ram and psu. What else do i need to connect the 24 drives? An HBA card and a SAS expander? Could you please give me a very rough estimate of cost for a 12Gb SAS Expander and 6Gb SAS Expander? thanks
  2. Hello I would like some help to understand what SAS expander speed should i need, for my specific needs for a cold storage server storing media files, without vm's. Unfortunatly the link here didn't help me http://www.sasexpanders.com/faq/ In the case of a cold storage server with 15-24 drives of 8ΤB-10TB, will we gain parity/rebuilding speed if we use a 12G SAS Expander instead of 6G or 3G? What are the most crucial factors, that makes parity check or rebuilding an array, faster? The ram and cpu is crucial or its only a matter of hard drives speeds? thanks
  3. thanks for clarifying this. Can i also share unassigned hard drives on my home network? but in that way, we loose all the benefits on an unraid pool... like parity and one big pool.
  4. Hello! I have change all my hard drives to 8TB (which has the sweet spot TB/€) on both servers (synology nas and unRAID cold storage) But i need to move my unRAID cold storage server in a case that support more drives. Right now, unRAID has 10 drives (2 parity 8 data) and my future plan is to add one or two drives, per year. I read that unRAID OS Pro license has Unlimited attached storage devices and supports up to 30 storage devices in the parity-protected array (28 data and 2 parity) and up to 24 storage devices in the cache pool. So the "unlimited" is 30 hard drives. Since that i live in a small place, i store my servers at living room/home cinema room. So i need to be as quiet as possible but unfortunately, i can't afford expensive silent solutions. Nanoxia Deep Silence 6 rev.B http://nanoxia-world.com/en/products/cases/deep-silence-series/deep-silence-6-rev.-b/209/deep-silence-6-rev.-b-dark-black?c=127 NORCO RPC-4224 https://www.newegg.com/global/gr-en/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219038 dont know if i can found it cheaper in Europe I read that its noisy as hell and i also this... How a Norco case killed 13TB of our data http://wsyntax.com/cs/killer-norco-case/ X-Case eXtra Value RM 424 https://www.xcase.co.uk/collections/4u-rackmount-cases/products/x-case-extra-value-rm-424-24-hotswap-bays from the video it seems very silent but i guess that it has only one drive and maybe the fans works with the slowest speeds. The silent Nanoxia tower has 2 negatives: its only capable for 16-20 drives and replacing drives, isn't as trouble free as the rack mount. Although that a rack mount solution should fit more drives and changing drives is easy, don't know if the noise isn't appropriate for a living room/home cinema room. room for at least 15 drives (3.5"), ideally 30 drives (the maximum that unraid supports) don't mind if its a standard pc case or rackmount don't need to be Hot-Swappable not to loud (it will be placed in a living room) not above 500€ (if its only for the server case) available to Europe Would love your recommendations, thoughts and suggestion for other cases or solution that a rack mount server can be silent, like a noise damping rack cabinet. Finally, could you please recommend me all the other hardware that i need to be able to have 15+ drives? Does the more ram and cpu power is needed for parity check and rebuilding an array? If not, any cpu/ram combination is perfect since that its only for storing media files and i don't use vm's.
  5. Is these the drives that you preclear? https://www.costco.com/Seagate-Backup-Plus-Hub-8TB-Desktop-Hard-Drive-with-Rescue-Data-Recovery-Services.product.100458004.html you use them as external or internal drives? if we open the case of those external SEAGATE to get the internal drive, the warranty is still valid? Which specific drives model those external backups use? At similar price, these is also a WD https://www.amazon.de/WD-Book-Desktop-AES-Hardwareverschlüsselung-WDBBGB0080HBK-EESN/dp/B01LWVT81X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1543505829&sr=8-2&keywords=8+tb https://www.amazon.de/Seagate-STEL8000200-Festplatte-eingebauten-Photography/dp/B01IAD5ZC6/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1543505829&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=8+tb&psc=1 and a much cheaper SEAGATE https://www.amazon.de/Seagate-STGY8000400-Portable-Festplatte-Exclusive/dp/B07DQBFQ2D/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1543505829&sr=8-3&keywords=8+tb thanks!
  6. thanks for the info! i would like to share more than one ip with a NFS SHARES? my settings are: Security: Private Rule:,rw) that works for one ip. but how can i put two or more? the below rule unfortunatly doesn't work. Rule:,rw),,rw) thanks in advance!
  7. thanks! i just did the above steps and i start parity sync.
  8. i have re-sync but the problem is still there. i grab the diagnostics if that helps. i also reboot it and start stop the array in the past i also had problems with HPA, if this helps a little bit. im starting to worry... Any help would be greatly appreciated! diagnostics-20180606-2235.zip
  9. thanks! I already have dual parity, but it takes 30+ hours for parity check.. so it would take almost 15 days (8 x 30+ hours) of constantly rebuilding. because of the high stress of the disks, isn't this method very risky?
  10. Hello I would like to replace all my seagate archives HDD on something more reliable model like ironwolf or red. i now have 8TB seagate archives and would like to replace all of them, with 8TB (or maybe 10TB depends on the price) seagate ironwolf or WD red. What is the simplest method? If i add a new HDD in the pool, is there a way to empty all the contents of an older HDD to the new HDD?
  11. Hello I have open the case and check the cable, also i have run the SMART short self-test: Last SMART test result: Completed without error I have a also upload the diagnostics. Could you please advise me what to check? thanks! diagnostics-20180604-2201.zip
  12. Hello I had a few months to login at my unRAID and i forget my user password. I search at safari/chrome/firefox password manager if they store it, without any luck. Is there a safe method to not lose any data, and reset the user password? is the following method safe? i use unRAID 6. Thanks in advance !
  13. Could anyone suggest me what settings should i choose? parity drives Spin down delay: use default data drives the Spin down delay: 15 minutes Should i use the 15 minutes spin down for all drives?
  14. i have 8 seagate archive 8TB disks, 2 of them are parity drives. for parity drives the Spin down delay: use default for data drives the Spin down delay: 15 minutes i use my server rarely.. once or twice a week for 2 hours. Should i put all disks (inducing parity drives) Spin down delay: 15 minutes or use default? what is the default? thanks
  15. Until you reach 16 HDD, you can also go with the DS1, saving some money for more HDDs, as well as it has smaller footprint. I may also go with that route, since i also have only 10 drives..
