  1. What is the point of sharing an encrypted file system? Would it not be better to simply mount the truecrypt file when needed? Can you not do multiple mount (2 workstations ) at the same time, on the same file? I thought you could. I can maybe test that. I use truecrypt, but I mount it everytime I need it. More secure.
  2. How did you get the tightvnc server to launch from bootup without having to have a user logged in to be able to vnc?
  3. No luck yet on it. I have a free system I can test on now though, but I will have to do a full install of slackware first! Issh. If only I could run unraid on ubuntu 64(Linux Mint) BTW, I finally dropped XP/windows completely this week in my house! Linux Mint rules for the Non linux windows to linux converts like me! Now if it were unix (AIX) I would be running circles around it. Plays all movies and formats right out of the box. I only had to install Picasa, google earth, VLC, F-Prot Antivirus (free for home use), a few games for fun (Emulators), openssh server. The rest comes all loaded. AWESOME, Fast, and responsive.
  4. OK, I know they received the powersupply, they tried to pawn off a model which is cheaper, half price! I told them I would wait for the proper replacement! Still waiting, not impressed. Good thing I wnet out and bought a corsair in the meantime!
  5. Well it could be many things. I just recently had a problem with share not showing up. Unraid was not the problem. Now when you browse from another computer (linux or windows) can you see the shares? Do you have local browser master set to yes in unraid settings? Now, my quick fix was putting in the names and addresses of all servers and shares that all my devices could possibly see in the host file. Is your device configured to be on the same windows network as unraid and other computers? ie workgroup (normally the default)
  6. I think they did a good job on the benchmarks here: http://www.linux-mag.com/cache/7525/1.html Have a look, and tell me if this is what your seeing on unraid cache as well. I think 60-67MB/s is about as fast as I have seen my box go, writing to cache drive.
  7. Folks, stay away from the OCZ 800W eliteXtreme power supply. I am now on my second RMA!@! Still waiting to get my RMA back. I did not wait, and went out and bought a Corsair instead. The replacement will be a backup. Curious if anyone knows of good cheap Dual hotswapable power supply that would do the trick?
  8. There motherboards have to already be certified, at least level 1.
  9. Ouch you guys! Give Tom a break. Summer is not over yet!
  10. Do you know of any utilities that does "Data Integrity Monitoring" Ie create a hash list (md5/sha128 or 256). Stores it, and compares the files on a weekly basis, against the original hash? There are many tools out there to create a hash, but what about comparing the hashes from previous weeks? Anyone create any scripts or have a solution?
  11. Of course one option is to dump the Norco case and use someone else's case that has been proven in a production business environment: Clean power and sata cable lines. No drive cages to trap heat. Just drop your hard drive on the sata backplane and go. Large fans to cool the drives. They have been running with this setup for a while, so it is well proven. Now they use software raid, instead of unraid. http://blog.backblaze.com/2009/09/01/petabytes-on-a-budget-how-to-build-cheap-cloud-storage/ 45 Drives of 1.5 TB for 8-9K. Now you can run unraid on this if the Port multipliers are supported in unraid. What is the maximum number of drives support in unraid now? Is there a link to all the stats which get updated? Now the case above needs to have a better power supply. Why they did not chose a redundant power supply setup, is not clear. I also think they could have done better than use a pci card in the mix.
  12. What are the block sizes used by default with dd? 512K? What is the Reiser FS default block size? Just wondering if it is a valid test.

    Fusion IO Card

Guys I might have access to do some testing on a Fusion IO 80GB card. What software/test would you like to see if I can get access to it? Be specific.. ie USE iometer with this xxx script. What is a good test? Test unraid (probably not an option) other than testing the cache drive. Besides the card costs more than my entire setup! it is like 5000$ for an 80GB card that is supposed to do 1.1GB/s Writes and 1.5GB/s Read with 32K packets, 200000 IOPS with 4K packets read and 132000 IOPS with 4K write packets, . 24 year life span with 5TB write/erase per day. the 320GB model has a 48 year lifespan (Wear leveling)
  14. I havenot had any luck with the Antec power supplies nor the OCZ power supplies made by power and cooling! I recommend Corsair or Seasonic.
  15. Even though some cards say they support port multipliers and have the right chipsets, it does not mean it will work or work 100% of the time. In the backblaze article they mention it: http://blog.backblaze.com/2009/09/01/petabytes-on-a-budget-how-to-build-cheap-cloud-storage/ "A note about SATA chipsets: Each of the port multiplier backplanes has a Silicon Image SiI3726 chip so that five drives can be attached to one SATA port. Each of the SYBA two-port PCIe SATA cards has a Silicon Image SiI3132, and the four-port PCI Addonics card has a Silicon Image SiI3124 chip. We use only three of the four available ports on the Addonics card because we have only nine backplanes. We don’t use the SATA ports on the motherboard because, despite Intel’s claims of port multiplier support in their ICH10 south bridge, we noticed strange results in our performance tests. Silicon Image pioneered port multiplier technology, and their chips work best together." So are there any adaptec or other cards that would do the trick, and be supported in unraid? We should start a compatiblity matrix/spreadsheet with which cards work, which version of unraid, which cards work with port multipliers, and what settings had to be set to make them work. Does the spin down and spin up work? Does the parity check work, and does hdparam work ? So we need a test check list and then some people to test. With the summer being almost over, I should have more time to play with unRaid now. I would love to drop my tx4 pci 4 port cards.
  16. How could we make this rig better? redundant power supply custom made for Hard Drives (since we do not need the sli power cables)? Which make and model? I think I would swap the cards he uses for two or three pci-x cards from addonics adg3gx4r5 at 70$ a pop. 40 Drives is enough, and boot off of the sataII drive instead of pata. Then for work, I would throw in a dual Nic or Fibre Card depending on what I needed. How makes custom cases?
  17. That was so awesome, I had to read it twice, and thrice! I wish they would have posted more information like performance metrics, drive temperatures, noise levels (I would expect loud), and any maid options. This could totally be adapted for unRaid! Ah the future looks bright. I will need some solar cells on the roof just to power my storage! grin. Now did they use the most energy efficient setup? Power supplies, Drives, Maid support on the cards? A little research is needed. I am also very interested in deduplication and encryption on the fly. This would be a great archive solution, if I could hook this up to my TSM server, or heck, install TSM on this server running linux. Hmm Unraid with Tivoli TSM for archiving with this setup? With Gige being a huge bottleneck, unless you throw in a quad nic for TSM (not unraid shares). I wonder.... Thoguhts? Any TSM admins out there? TSM has deduplication built in, and they just bought protectier VTL. TSM check: it only supports RED 5 and Suse 10. I do not suppose Unraid would run on either of those?
  18. What is the latest version of sabnzb people are running and are the dependencies still working for it?
  20. I put everything on my cache drive, and all the other drives spin down. Now I did make one mistake in my config that allows some downloads to go straight to shared drives instead of the cache drive, which causes a freeze in playback when the drives spin up to save an 8 -16GB file. I might put my sabnzbd on a different drive, and then place on downloads onced unzip to the cache drive, under the proper folders so that they get copied over later at night. SABNZBD question. With RSS feeds, is there a way to specify a directory with the accept a title? ie so that cbc market place downloads (legal) can automatically go to cache/tv/CBC_MARKETPLACE no matter what episodes?
  21. Anyone use the deploy tools or the bare metal restores on a different box?
  22. Has anyone noticed if sabnzbd can cause playback of movies to pause while it unzips or pars a file? Just curious. Anyone running the latest version? I know I am behind at least one version...
  23. Yes, my new 1.5TB Drive (Parity) is acting up. Seeing errors. I will have to run a smart on it and then see what the deal is. If smart fails on unraid, I will also run a smart on the same drive on a different cpu. It explains the clicking I have been hearing. I also set the drive to not spin down in case that is causing the errors. We will see tonight (24 hours later).
  24. Thanks. I will be patient. I am in no rush to add more drives, as I have 16 or so drives right now. The only thing this would do for me is better performance over pci promise cards.
  25. Has anyone tested the card with Beta 6? I just got back from holidays. I might try and test it if I get a chance. Now that summer is here though, it is all about the boat, and wakeboarding/skating.
