  1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Us80Dvu3EA Do you need 1GbE: CAT 5e Do you need 10GbE less than 55m: CAT6 Do you need 10GbE greater than 55m: CAT6A. CAT 7 really does not have a use case what so ever and CAT8 will be able to run the 40GbE standard when it does come out.
  2. https://unraid.net/blog/uncast-15 Stefano Partida of SPXlabs stops by the Uncast Show for a lively chat with SpaceinvaderOne about ZFS, homelabs and gear, a listener Q&A, and much more!
  3. https://louwrentius.com/should-i-use-zfs-for-my-home-nas.html "When building your own home NAS, you may be advised to use ZFS for the file system. I would only recommend using ZFS if you understand it well and you accept its limitation. It must make sense for your particular situation and your skill level. I would like to make the case that for a lot of people, ZFS offers little benefit given their circumstances and for those people, I think it is totally reasonable to select a different platform......In this article, I'm not arguing against ZFS itself, it's an amazing file system with interesting features, but it may not be the best option for your particular situation."
  4. https://www.phoronix.com/news/OpenZFS-2.1.8-Released While the much anticipated OpenZFS 3.0 hasn't yet materialized as it was originally hoped for in 2022, OpenZFS 2.x continues on maturing nicely with fixes and other updates to this open-source ZFS file-system implementation currently supported on FreeBSD and Linux systems.
  5. https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2023/01/ubuntu-zfs-support-status In 2019 Canonical was upbeat about their support for contentious file system, making waves with the release of Ubuntu 19.10 which featured an experimental option to install Ubuntu (kernel, system files, and user data) on a ZFS volume. Ubuntu was the first major Linux distro to embrace ZFS, despite the tangle of issues around its licensing. But since then the enthusiasm has waned.
  6. The SMB Security Export setting determines whether the share is visible and/or accessible. Setting Export to 'Yes (hidden)' will hide the share from browsing but is still accessible if you know the share name.
  7. I agree with this comment also and look forward to the next episode. I do appreciate all of Ed's great Unraid work, just not retro-gaming content.😏
  8. ✔️ Now that is something I did not know - thanks for the info, not that I need dual parity at the moment, but it's good to know when I do.

For those who are more technically inclined, Vaultwarden is an alternative implementation of Bitwarden that can provide a number of additional benefits. This video will introduce both Bitwarden and Vaultwarden, take a look at their security, and compare them for both personal and business use, giving recommendations for different use cases."

  17. https://forums.unraid.net/topic/131232-unraid-os-version-6115-available/ This release reverts a change which modified the wrong file. This resulted in not being able to select 'macvlan' custom docker network type. New installations only will now have 'ipvlan' selected by default.

  19. https://forums.unraid.net/topic/130726-unraid-os-version-6113-available/ This release is focused on bug fixes and minor improvements. In particular, we need to revert a base library due to a bug which prevents formatting devices >2TB in size.

  22. For users tempted to use USB connected drives within the array, on the Unraid forum JonathanM has said: USB is notorious for random disconnects, which kicks the drive out of the array. Also, the USB-SATA interface may introduce differences in absolute size, or other abnormalities like non-unique serial number returns or several other issues. Smart reports, and the ability to track drive health may be limited. Cooling can be a challenge. Some drives work better than others as USB, but on the whole it's a recipe for disaster when you depend on all drives to work perfectly 100% of the time. https://forums.unraid.net/topic/75930-why-not-to-use-usb-external-drives-in-an-array/

  24. https://www.45drives.com/community/customer-spotlights/bill-kleyman2.php "In my own experience working with a lot of different types of storage and storage virtualization (software-defined storage) solutions, both enterprise and SMB, Unraid is easily one of the best platforms out there for the SMB and even home user. Basically, Unraid is an OS (or software-defined storage system) that's specifically designed for personal and small business use. It incorporates enterprise-class features that let you configure your computer systems to maximize performance and capacity using any combination of applications, VMs, storage devices, and hardware. Words don't do it justice; you really should check them out."
