6.10.1 & 6.10.2 - problems downloading/updating plugins/OS from a cdn URL location

Running Version: 6.10.2 & 6.10.1 on two separate servers, both with the CDN issue:

I've been running unRaid for a couple of years now and only over the last few months the My Servers plugin just stopped working. Then when I try and update my OS on either version, it just stalls out when hitting a CDN-based URL. I've tried copy/pasting the links to update the OS into the plugins as well, but same problems. So, I can't update the plugin or update the OS at this point, but I'm having zero issues getting anywhere or doing anything else withe unRaid. I can still update dockers, most plugins, apps, etc..

Main issues:
1. Cannot install My Servers plugin. Gets stuck on the .cdn.

2. OS Update: Cannot install Plugin file as listed below when the URL contains a .cdn. (My Servers -or- copy/pasting in the OS update link)

3. Tools | Update OS just hangs when "checking" for a Status

Then I receive this error messages at the top of my unRaid session. I have to reboot to get that to go away after trying to install the My Servers plugin:

Testing out the DNS rebinding:
ping rebindtest.unraid.net

I've tried all kinds of things, but can't figure out why the .cdn. in that URL keeps blocking things. I haven't changed anything on my router in a long time, either.

I also attached my diagnostics from the v6.10.2 box.

EDIT:
Adding in that I have previously checked and tested out the Date & time / NTP to be sure that it's 100% synced and working properly as well on both of my servers.

 

EDIT 2:
Just for troubleshooting I changed out my DNS so that it was no longer Cloudflare (1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1) and moved it to Google (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) and it is still doing the same exact thing. Still just stalls at the cdn plugin/installs.

EDIT 3:
Again for troubleshooting purposes I disabled all packet filtering and my pfSense firewall so that all traffic was able to come and go freely. Still running into the same problem.

Are you able to download the cdn urls from your computer? That might indicate that there is a firewall blocking Unraid

 

I'd recommend going to Settings -> Network and deleting all DNS servers and replacing with 8.8.8.8

 

This isn't going to solve your problem, but please use this url if you are going to manually install My Servers (looks like we need to update the wiki):
  https://unraid-dl.sfo2.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/unraid-api/dynamix.unraid.net.plg

I can download the non-cdn URLs from anywhere on my network just fine, and that's also including non-unRaid computers/servers. No matter which computer/server, browsers, etc.. that I try the non-cdn URL works fine, but the cdn URL just hangs/stalls.

The only thing my firewall/router has rules for are to change the port 80 and port 443 to different ports. There's nothing else really in there to block anything at all, and nothing else that I do on my entire network/servers/etc.. has any other issues other than this.

My DNS servers are 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 -- which are Cloudflare's DNS servers. 

Yeah, that URL you gave me hangs as well when trying to manually install since it's a cdn URL and I just see this:

Nevermind, the plugin installed just fine after a reboot
Must have been because I was way behind in updates... 
Now my issue is with the local SSL cert... but that is for another forum thread!
 


I'm glad that you've been able to fix stuff via a reboot. That's awesome.

Just as a note, I took every single link that had cdn in it and just removed the cdn to make it work. 
However, the script on the back-end (or in the plugin itself, etc..) adds in the cdn later on in the process, so kinda' stuck after that.

Could you edit the script (.plg file) and remove the cdn inside?

Well, they are usually linked to a specific URL, so they aren't housed on the server (as far as I'm aware) in any way. This is an example:

  

Normal CDN URL:

https://unraid-dl.sfo2.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/stable/unRAIDServer.plg

Edited non-CDN URL where I just remove the cdn.:
https://unraid-dl.sfo2.digitaloceanspaces.com/stable/unRAIDServer.plg

The file linked here: https://unraid-dl.sfo2.digitaloceanspaces.com/unraid-api/dynamix.unraid.net.plg
is editable, it has 2 links inside that have the cdn.
You could copy the text, remove the cdns, save the file in a directory on the server, like appdata and install the plugin manually in unraid.

Yeah, something that I was going to add to my original post was that I checked the date & time / NTP on both servers and they are exactly on time/date. Definitely one of the first things that I checked after reading through a bunch of posts in here. Thanks for the thought and idea, though!

Yeah, I see what you're saying there. I haven't done that before, but I imagine it would be possible.
However, that's just a quick workaround that won't help with future updates/patches/installs of plugins or OS.
I am definitely looking for a more permanent fix.

Something on your network or at your ISP is blocking the CDN url, I'm not sure what it is. Can you think of any changes you have made since you last did an update?

 

In the future it may be possible to have Unraid detect this situation and fallback to the non-CDN url automatically, but in the short term, @Normand_Nadon's suggestion is good for updating the My Servers plugin. Here are more detailed steps:

* Download this file and place it somewhere on your server: https://unraid-dl.sfo2.digitaloceanspaces.com/unraid-api/dynamix.unraid.net.plg
* Edit the file, and modify the downloadserver url on line 16 to remove "cdn."
* Navigate to Plugins -> Install Plugin -> select local plugin file -> Install
* Keep an eye on this thread for My Servers updates: https://forums.unraid.net/topic/112073-my-servers-releases-and-announcements/

 


To update the OS:
* Download the desired OS from here: https://unraid.net/download 
* Open the zip and copy bz* and changes.txt to the root of your flash drive, overwriting the files that are there
* Reboot

 

Let me know if you have trouble with these steps, or if you find other areas that do not work with the CDN urls.

On the 6.10.2 box I was able to do this just fine and the My Servers plugin was able to install.
It also worked on the 6.10.1 box as well.

I'll wait a while to update the OS to see if there's a fix prior to that to make it easier.

Would you please open a web terminal and run these two commands? 

time wget --debug https://unraid-dl.sfo2.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/stable/unRAIDServer.plg
echo $?

This puts wget into debug mode and should let us know at which point in the download process it is failing.  Please let that first command run until it dies on its own, then run the echo command.

 

Then let's try this, which forces wget to use ipv4 only: 

time wget -4 --debug https://unraid-dl.sfo2.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/stable/unRAIDServer.plg
echo $?

I ran the echo command after running both of those commands (which definitely took some time), and I received a "4" for both of those.

I'm working on solving this issue.  The plan is to retry the download without the cdn if the cdn download fails, but waiting 89 Minutes for it to fail before retrying won't work.  I cannot reproduce your situation and would like to get a more reasonable fail time so the wget doesn't get stuck for an extended time.

 

Can you run the following wget command and post the time it takes to fail out? 

time wget --debug --retry-connrefused --prefer-family=IPv4 --timeout=5 --tries=3 --waitretry=3 https://unraid-dl.sfo2.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/stable/unRAIDServer.plg

and post the same debug log as before.
