Vedenhenki
Just built a new server of brand new hardware. However, upon booting up unraid, both of my data drives show up as "Unmountable - unsupported partition layout". Formatting the disks does absolutely nothing. I've tried switching the disks around so that another one of them is the parity drive, but the parity drive always shows up working up as intended, and the other two as shown. I've tried manually setting the filesystem to XFS, and then xfs_repair shows the following (and endless amount of dots): Phase 1 - find and verify superblock... bad primary superblock - bad magic number !!! attempting to find secondary superblock...... And setting to btfrs: No valid Btrfs found on /dev/md1 ERROR: cannot open file system Opening filesystem to check... JorgeB
Still failing to create the partitions, not clear why, install the preclear plugin and run just the clear part to see if the disks are successfully cleared. Quote Link to comment
Vedenhenki
I plugged the drives to a windows machine, was able to format them all to NTFS and they seem to be operating normally. This did not change the behaviour of the unraid, still showing same behaviour. Installed the plugin, and at first the tool showed no drives available for preclear, so went to try mounting them. Showed all of them with NTFS partitions of the correct size. At first, I was unable to mount the drives via UD. However, after changing the colume names and mountpoints, I was able to mount two of the disks and browse the filesystem. Third, however, at this point showed as available to preclear, and unable to be mounted, and with no filesystem. Now running preclear on the one drive that was available for preclear, will take a long while. All this behaviour strikes me as very strange and inconsistent Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
It is very strange, don't remember seeing this exact same issue ever, could be some partition or signature that exists in the disks that is causing issues, but if that is the problem it should go away if the disk is successfully cleared. CedricB
Hi, I seem to have the exact same problem as Vedenhenki: Yesterday, I've also built a new server with 4 brand new drives. After starting an array, only the parity drive seems to mount correctly. Formatting the other disks doesn't work and they keep throwing the error message: "Unmountable - unsupported partition layout". Removing the config and starting the array with a different disk as parity drive gives the same result (parity disk mounts, the other don't). I ran UD preclear up untill step 5/5 (pre-read, zeroed disk, writing and veryfing preclear signature all completed successfully). I paused during the post-read and tried to clear and format, but the drives still wouldn't mount. Now I resumed the post-read to see if that would help (will take 7-8h). The system log shows the same pattern as in the logs of Vedenhenki: GPT is written to a disk, then followed by a command to remove the GPT structure (sgdisk -Z)? Could be the other way round depending on how the log is produced. After that the disk can't be mounted because of an unsupported partition layout. The error thrown by root also mentions 'S#0004' instead of e.g. /dev/sdc Nov 6 11:41:09 TheLostArk emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sdd Nov 6 11:41:09 TheLostArk emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sde Nov 6 11:41:09 TheLostArk emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sdb Nov 6 11:41:09 TheLostArk emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sdc Nov 6 11:41:09 TheLostArk emhttpd: read SMART /dev/sda Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk kernel: mdcmd (31): set md_num_stripes 1280 Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk kernel: mdcmd (32): set md_queue_limit 80 Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk kernel: mdcmd (33): set md_sync_limit 5 Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk kernel: mdcmd (34): set md_write_method Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk kernel: mdcmd (35): start NEW_ARRAY Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk kernel: unraid: allocating 25990K for 1280 stripes (5 disks) Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk kernel: md1: running, size: 3907018532 blocks Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk kernel: md2: running, size: 3907018532 blocks Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk kernel: md3: running, size: 3907018532 blocks Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk emhttpd: shcmd (45723): udevadm settle Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk emhttpd: writing GPT on disk (sdb), with partition 1 byte offset 32KiB, erased: 0 Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk emhttpd: shcmd (45724): sgdisk -Z /dev/sdb Nov 6 11:41:23 TheLostArk root: Problem opening S#004 for reading! JorgeB
It's a bug with the latest release, for now suggest downgrading to v6.11.1 to format the disks, you can then upgrade back if you want. 2 Quote Link to comment
CedricB
Thanks for the quick reply! Just wanted to confirm that downgrading helped and the disks are all mounted now. 1 Quote Link to comment

Or is there a quick way of transferring my key to a new USB drive with an older version? And which version is sufficiently old? Quote Link to comment
trurl
Download 6.11.1,unzip, copy all bz* files to flash 1 Quote Link to comment
nakobo
Thank you for the quick response. I simply overwrote all bz* on the USB drive using the files from the 6.11.1 release. Everything worked instantly on the older version. Thank you very much for the help! Steps I did to get it working: Download and extract 6.11.1 release on different machine Mount USB drive on the same machine Overwrite files: cp -v bz* /path/to/UNRAID/ Invoked fFrom within extracted dir using mount path of USB drive Thanks again! minuzle
After days of fighting this issue as I'm trying to upgrade 8 different drives I came across this thread and noticed 6.11.3 was released today. I can now stop banging my head on my desk! Version 6.11.3 2022-11-08 This release is focused on bug fixes and minor improvements. In particular, we need to revert a base library due to a bug which prevents formatting devices >2TB in size. Management Reverted 'libpopt.so.0.0.1' to workaround 'sgdisk' bug used to format devices larger than 2TB. Quote Link to comment

It appears I still have to preclear all these disks as they come up unmountable even on 6.11.3 Quote Link to comment

This suggest there must be something else going on. Quote Link to comment

I'm now on 6.11.3 and they all still say that when trying to rebuild. Even after I've put my original drive in, created a new config, validated parity etc. The original drives mount just fine as soon as I put one of these other drives in I get the issue. I may just go down to 6.11.1 and see what happens. Quote Link to comment
minuzle
If I use unassigned devices to format it anything but XFS I can mount it, if I select XFS it fails to mount. Kilrah
Not clear what you're trying to do. If you're doing a rebuild then no partitioning/formatting should take place. Edited November 9, 2022 by Kilrah Quote Link to comment

I rebooted before I saw your msg, I do have a diagnostics from last night I can post. Looking through dmesg I found this so now I'm leaning that maybe I have some bad ram, fix common problems is logging machine check errors. minuzle
I have also since downgraded to 6.11.1 and the issue persisted. Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
You do appear to have RAM problems but those should be unrelated since you have ECC RAM and they are logged as corrected, still need to replace the faulty DIMM(s) ASAP. Since you did many rebuild attempts and new configs I would suggest first rebooting to clear the logs, then doing a new config with all the old disks, check parity is already valid but run a correcting parity check since a few since errors are expected, only after that's done without any issues try replacing the disks again, using v6.11.1 or v6.11.3, if any unmountable disk comes up at any point during that post new diags. 1 Quote Link to comment

Ok I'll do that, I did just reboot about 45 minutes ago but I'll do it again and post new diagnostics. One other thing to note is my last few monthly parity checks have resulted in corrected errors. I assume that is because I have disk11 and disk19 starting to produce errors which was the reason I purchased all these drives originally.
