What's the best format to use on unRAID for DVDs.

Featured Replies

That subject made no sense...sorry.

What I mean is what are you guys doing to get your DVDs (dvd format) onto your unRAID box?

Do you just copy the video_ts files or do you make an ISO image or do you just rip to AVI or MKV or what?

Also...how do you handle multi-episode DVDs.  Like say you have a few TV episodes on a DVD...how do I get them off individually?

Thanks again!

Andy

If you want as close to original including extras as possible just make an iso. If you just want the movie or the episdoes rip to mkv (h.264). It has the best compression while keeping quality of the all video codecs at the moment. Use handbrake (www.handbrake.fr) to rip. For DVDs with TV episodes it will locate the episodes for you. If you don't need 5.1 sound use AAC for the audio and downmix to stereo. If you need 5.1 just do AC3 passthru.

The best format will depend on what you want to do with the ripped contents and what you intend to use to play the files with.  Not all player software can handle the ISO container format for example, others can't handle MKV (some can't handle either).  Some players may prefer the video recoded to h.264 rather than the native MPEG2 that DVD uses.  Do you want menu navigation, or just to be able to watch the main film?

Some more info would help folks to guide you better.

Any of the good players (VLC for example, xbmc, WD devices) play the ISO just fine. If you want to keep same quality and chapters it's what I use. I just rip the main movie.

Hi guys...thanks for the replies.

I guess in some cases it would be nice to rip the entire DVDs with menus, features, etc., and all that jazz.

In other cases, I have episode DVDs where it would be fine just to rip the individual episodes and store them separately.

Do most good DVD tools handle both...full rips and individual episode rips?

Also, what would be the best way to store them...ISO, TS files?

I am using PLEX on a ROKU streamer for playback.

Lot of questions, I know...thanks  alot!

Andy

For movies on DVD i rip to ISO and keep the entire disc, extras and all. - I use AnyDVD and CloneDVD

For BluRay I rip using makemkv and only the main title - As mentioned Makemkv

For TV Shows on DVD I rip only the individual episodes on the show - AnyDVD and Handbrake

Hmm has Plex finally fixed the memory use issue?

I had tried Plex + Unraid + Roku and just didn't like how flakey it was.

Jumperalex,

Only been using it a few days, but all's well.  What specific problem were you having?

Andy

Old issue where it would eat memory and then the process would get killed. I didn't research much just now, but it looks like it might have been resolved.

Hmmm...if that still exists I guess I'll find out soon enough...#fingerscrossed!

No plex issues here, been using it for a couple of weeks and I have been very pleased with it, I have the latest version by the way.

thanks

xbmc will.

XBMC and MKV for the win in my opinion. ;)

That means decision made then, right.  If you want menus then you have to go with folders.

If you decide to drop the use of menus then go MKV, but don't use MakeMKV.  I have had issues with A/V sync with files created that way.  ClownBD / MKV Merge and Handbrake work better.

Yep ISO's work fine in XBMC. I've made several of them.

I used to use AnyDVD and DVDShrink to make an ISO.

I stopped a long time ago and just use AnyDVD and rip to folders.

XBMC can play from the folder or the ISO file.

If I'm taking the movie portable I convert it with handbrake or autogk or magic DVD ripper.

I learned that if I just keep the folders as is. I can use XBMC or one of the other software packages to do what I need to without any extra work of pulling data from the ISO.

Well, I've got a Dune D1 and a PCH-A210.  I use to rip all of my BD movies as main movie only, HD sound track, AC3 sound track, and subs as single M2TS file with ClownBD.  Now, I rip all of my BD as folder structure with ClownBD.  I do this to keep the chapters like MKV does.  It has worked pretty good.  I also  use AnyDVD HD as removal of encryption.

I use MakeMKV for my DVD movies only.  All of my TV Shows are DVD, and I rip them as ISO's, but now I am considering ripping them as single episodes with MakeMKV just for better support for Zappiti and YAMJ /AEAN jukeboxes.

I've used MakeMKV (with AnyDVD) to put my entire DVD & Blu-Ray (movies & TV) collection on my NAS. Just the movie, no extra sound tracks or subtitles. Lossless. (Supports including those too, including force subtitles.)

Currently free during their beta stage.

I don't understand why one needs to use MkaeMKV and anyDVD.  MakeMKV by itself works fine and does the complete job. The mkv tools also work well for editing.  I just did the bluray version of Benhur and joined the two disks together into one MKV file with no pause  (intermission)  I just have to spend a little time to change the chapters file to be correct for the merged file.

It's a matter of what anyone prefers to use.

I think you missed my point.  The purpose of anydvd is to run in the background and remove encryption. Makemkv does not need that done.  It decrypts on the fly.  I have not seen any dvd or BR that makeMKV cannot decrypt.

I tend to rip many discs at once and then run MakeMKV. I've had discs that MakeMKV had issues with and discs that AnyDVD had issues with. In the end, I trust AnyDVD more.

There are a handful of discs that MakeMKV can't handle.  Have never had AnyDVD fail.  95%+ you don't need both.
