Disk Not in smartctl database

Featured Replies

Been having some issues lately with my unRaid Box. I thought all was resolved after opening my case checking connections than renaming my extra and packages directories. However, today I see that one of my hard drives is 'Not in smartctl database' any guidance on why that is and how it can be resolved would be greatly appreciated

Also, My unRaid server is making a rattling noise alot lately but there is no visible reason as to why. I took that box appart and attempted to shake the drives in their housing but they didn't budge. Hopefully this drive is not about to die.

It doesn't matter.

Also, My unRaid server is making a rattling noise alot lately but there is no visible reason as to why.

Unexplained rattling is more likely caused by a fan. Sometimes even a good fan is out of balance just enough to cause sheet metal to rattle. Blow all the dust out of the fans and make sure each one spins easily. Dying drives typically click or clatter on access, very occasionally squeal or make a beeping noise.

The smartctl program has an internal list of disks it knows about.  It is compiled in based on the version of smartctl (and when it was created)

According to your own message, the version of smartctl you are running was

smartctl 5.40 2010-10-16

and its version is as of almost 2 years ago  (October 2010 ).  Apparently, as of that date, the model number/disk family of your EARX disk was not in its database.

It does not matter, not really anyways, as most of the SMART parameters are the same across manufacturers.  (And those that are model specific we really don't care about, since the manufacturers don't tell us how to interpret them)

Joe L.

For any unidentified parameters the SMART system still works. I.e., the VALUE and TRESH parameters are shown and failure is indicated correctly.

If it really bothers you enter the following:

/usr/sbin/update-smart-drivedb

Put that line in the go file to make it persist across reboots.

I did not know that command existed...  (and I learned something new today)

Awesome, Thanks to everyone for the helpful information.

  • 3 years later...

This command does not seem to work anymore - it seems the database link in the update script is no longer the correct one. Is there any solution to this?

  • 2 years later...

Late answer (sorry for the topic unburying), just to inform some eventual readers that the Videodr0me's error came from the execution by normal user of the command.

Why ? the /usr/sbin/update-smart-drivedb script download the disks base in some /var/lib root resources, which normal user cannot. Yep the result error say something like "download from trunk failed (HTTP error)", as it was anticipated by the author that it was the most common case, which is not for normal not 'always logged as root' user.

So do "sudo /usr/sbin/update-smart-drivedb"

Thank you dgaschk as I discovered this script from this msg thread (as many I think).

Not sure your necropost is really relevant. In Unraid, only the root user has access to the command line so that's why sudo wasn't needed.

This is very very outdated...

Latest versions of Unraid get the most up-to-date smart database included. No need for any scripted updates.
