pandionx
Hi, UnRAID newb here. I finally got my system set up, and finished the pre-clears of my 160gig cache drive, and 2 of my 1TB drives. But the results of my 1TB drives worry me a little - see below: Disk 1: SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 10 Vendor Specific SMART Attributes with Thresholds: ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x000f 111 099 006 Pre-fail Always - 30504968 3 Spin_Up_Time 0x0003 096 095 000 Pre-fail Always - 0 4 Start_Stop_Count 0x0032 100 100 020 Old_age Always - 148 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 036 Pre-fail Always - 1 7 Seek_Error_Rate 0x000f 076 060 030 Pre-fail Always - 45597486 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 076 076 000 Old_age Always - 21305 10 Spin_Retry_Count 0x0013 100 100 097 Pre-fail Always - 0 12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 020 Old_age Always - 148 183 Runtime_Bad_Block 0x0000 001 001 000 Old_age Offline - 511 184 End-to-End_Error 0x0032 001 001 099 Old_age Always FAILING_NOW 1087 187 Reported_Uncorrect 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 188 Command_Timeout 0x0032 100 090 000 Old_age Always - 485338710131 189 High_Fly_Writes 0x003a 096 096 000 Old_age Always - 4 190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022 045 043 045 Old_age Always FAILING_NOW 55 (7 102 57 53) 194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 055 057 000 Old_age Always - 55 (0 10 0 0) 195 Hardware_ECC_Recovered 0x001a 045 016 000 Old_age Always - 30504968 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0010 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 0 199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x003e 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0 240 Head_Flying_Hours 0x0000 100 253 000 Old_age Offline - 154687542154407 241 Total_LBAs_Written 0x0000 100 253 000 Old_age Offline - 3729696396 242 Total_LBAs_Read 0x0000 100 253 000 Old_age Offline - 1220836389 SMART Error Log Version: 1 ATA Error Count: 771 (device log contains only the most recent five errors) CR = Command Register [HEX] FR = Features Register [HEX] SC = Sector Count Register [HEX] SN = Sector Number Register [HEX] CL = Cylinder Low Register [HEX] CH = Cylinder High Register [HEX] DH = Device/Head Register [HEX] DC = Device Command Register [HEX] ER = Error register [HEX] ST = Status register [HEX] Powered_Up_Time is measured from power on, and printed as DDd+hh:mm:SS.sss where DD=days, hh=hours, mm=minutes, SS=sec, and sss=millisec. But drive one also reported an end to end error. I'm not sure what this means. I should add that previously, drive 1 was in another PC with what I believe to be a faulty SATA controller. Could these errors be a left-over from that? Any comments or advice? Thanks! smart_finish_sda.txt smart_finish_sdb.txt Quote Link to comment
Joe L.
I do not think either drive is completely safe to use, but, on the other hand, there has only been one re-allocated sector and they did pre-clear. SMART values do not usually recover from FAILING_NOW. I have no idea what an "end-to-end" error is. Both drives have been in an environment of very high heat. (55C = 131 F). I would not trust the pre-clear under such high heat. (things expand under high heat, and track alignment is just too critical) Get the temperature under control, then perhaps preclear again. Joe L. thegreatgumbino
Finished running my first 4 drives and need some guidance interpreting the results. My apologies if I've posted the wrong info or too much info. I wasn't really sure what should be included or the easiest way to present it, so I attached the full TXT file as well. The only thing that I glean from the reports is the End-To-End Error on /dev/sda ST31500541 AS_5XW0270P. Not sure if it is a deal breaker or not though. Ultimately, I have two additional WD750GB and two newer Seagate 2TB drives with all my data on them (~4.5TB). I need to have enough space available on the unRAID server to be able to transfer the info over and free up the Seagate 2TB drives for preclear and addition to the array, recognizing I can do one drive at a time, etc. I was planning on using the Seagate 80GB as my cache drive. /dev/sda ST31500541 AS_5XW0270P /dev/sdb scsi-SATA_WDC_WD7500AAKS-_WD-WCAPT0121327 /dev/sdd ST3808110AS_4LR2FTYS /dev/sde SAMSUNG_HD204UI_S2H7JD2B410043 Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: == invoked as: ./preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sda Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: == ST31500541AS 5XW0270P Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: == Disk /dev/sda has been successfully precleared Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: == with a starting sector of 64 Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: == Ran 1 cycle Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: == Total Elapsed Time 22:20:27 ============================================================================ Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: ** Changed attributes in files: /tmp/smart_start_sda /tmp/smart_finish_sda Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: ATTRIBUTE NEW_VAL OLD_VAL FAILURE_THRESHOLD STATUS RAW_VALUE Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: Raw_Read_Error_Rate = 119 112 6 ok 228623732 Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: Spin_Retry_Count = 100 100 97 near_thresh 0 Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: End-to-End_Error = 84 84 99 FAILING_NOW 16 Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: High_Fly_Writes = 91 94 0 ok 9 Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: Airflow_Temperature_Cel = 67 68 45 near_thresh 33 Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: Temperature_Celsius = 33 32 0 ok 33 Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: Hardware_ECC_Recovered = 70 58 0 ok 228623732 Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: *** Failing SMART Attributes in /tmp/smart_finish_sda *** Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: 184 End-to-End_Error 0x0032 084 084 099 Old_age Always FAILING_NOW 16 Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: Feb 19 13:43:24 Tower preclear_disk-diff[30342]: 0 sectors were pending re-allocation before the start of the preclear. dave
Apparently, on this drive, the sectors were able to be re-written to their original locations and then read successfully. There was no need to re-allocate them. Joe L. Does that mean the drive corrected itself? Or is this a leading indicator of future failure? Should I RMA the disk? Also, for the first disk I posted above about, 2 sectors had been re-allocated before the preclear and then there were still 2 re-allocated. The number did not increase, so the disk is fine? Or should I RMA that one? Thanks for your help!!! Quote Link to comment

Also, for the first disk I posted above about, 2 sectors had been re-allocated before the preclear and then there were still 2 re-allocated. The number did not increase, so the disk is fine? Or should I RMA that one? Thanks for your help!!! I would use both of them in the array. All disks will experience un-readable blocks over their lifetime. That the number of un-readable blocks did not increase is good. (if it increased each time you ran a preclear cycle it would be an indication of a disk starting to fail) Yes, that first drive corrected itself. Perhaps when the sectors that were marked as un-readable were written the drive experienced some vibration, or a power fluctuation, or something else to make the write perform poorly. The "write" in the preclear did work. There was no need to re-allocate the sector. Quote Link to comment

If you've already added it to the array, no. It is no longer pre-cleared as unRAID has written to it. If you had not yet assigned it to the array, then it is simple to change the partitioning using the -C option in preclear_disk.sh However, it is perfectly fine as you have it. The ONLY drives with the performance issue are Western Digital EARS drives. They have firmware that works less efficiently if not aligned on a 4K boundry. No other drives have this issue. Please post the preclear report for that drive. you'll find it in /boot/preclear_reports I'll be curious to what it says. Quote Link to comment

Helmonder
I had some kind of serious issues using the preclear script, I am linking to the thread describing them: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=18896.0 Quote Link to comment
Joe L.
I had some kind of serious issues using the preclear script, I am linking to the thread describing them: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=18896.0 Interesting, but the preclear script does nothing that the unRAID array will do itself when calculating parity or re-constructing a failed drive. It reads and write to the failed disk. (exactly like a parity check/calc or disk re-construction, it reads/writes the entire disk) The preclear script does invoke the smartctl program on the drive hundreds/thousands of times on the drive. unRAID uses native system calls to do the same. That is the only significant difference. The hardware will likely cause you the same errors once you put the disk into service. I wish you luck but I have nothing to suspect anything other than a bad drive. I've seen drives stop responding before... It seems like this is a case of this. We'll soon see. As you said, unRAID is clearing your drive. I would, if I were you, once assigned, see if you can get through a manual parity check. Joe L. Quote Link to comment
Dephcon
Hello, I'm running a pre-clear right now. Its a new 2TB EARX, connected to a Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 (also has 2 array drives connected to it), and I haven't seen the read speed pass 95MB/s. Is this a limit of the card? Should I be pre-clearing on mobo sata? Would I get better performance with a 3ware 9650SE-8LPML? Thanks, Quote Link to comment

Also SMART results are ok, with small and large test, no significant errors. The fact that you mention that the script does the same action but thru different calls sounds like the reason to me.. Also note that some other users had the exact same issue.. Disk is performing without an issue, I'll check back in a couple of weeks to confirm ! UPDATE: Disk got thrown out of the array, totally failed.. Checking it on a windows box with the correct western digital analysis tool also told me to contact tech support.. So drive was indeed kaput.. Preclearing the new drive resulted in a load of red errors again but only for a few minutes, after that it went on, drive has now been in for several days and is working beautifully (store gave me a new one right away). jbuszkie
So I was getting some ATA errors on this drive when doing a parity check. It even red-balled. So I took the files off the drive and I took it out of the array. I ran SeaTools on it and it failed (but didn't give me an error code) So the I decided to run it through 2 cycles of preclear. The first pre-read gave me those ATA errors again. After that, I don't think I got any more in the post read or the next pre/post read cycle. There were, at one point, 37 sectors pending re-allocation. Now there are 0 with none of then being relocated. so it must have fixed its self There are some SMART errors: SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 16 Vendor Specific SMART Attributes with Thresholds: ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x000f 100 093 051 Pre-fail Always - 11 3 Spin_Up_Time 0x0007 061 061 011 Pre-fail Always - 12530 4 Start_Stop_Count 0x0032 093 093 000 Old_age Always - 7245 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 010 Pre-fail Always - 0 7 Seek_Error_Rate 0x000f 100 100 051 Pre-fail Always - 0 8 Seek_Time_Performance 0x0025 100 100 015 Pre-fail Offline - 12720 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 096 096 000 Old_age Always - 21526 10 Spin_Retry_Count 0x0033 100 100 051 Pre-fail Always - 0 11 Calibration_Retry_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1 12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 111 13 Read_Soft_Error_Rate 0x000e 100 093 000 Old_age Always - 11 183 Unknown_Attribute 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 184 Unknown_Attribute 0x0033 100 100 000 Pre-fail Always - 0 187 Reported_Uncorrect 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 790 188 Unknown_Attribute 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022 080 061 000 Old_age Always - 20 (Lifetime Min/Max 17/22) 194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 080 060 000 Old_age Always - 20 (Lifetime Min/Max 17/24) 195 Hardware_ECC_Recovered 0x001a 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 940515921 196 Reallocated_Event_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 099 000 Old_age Always - 0 198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0030 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 1 199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x003e 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x000a 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 201 Soft_Read_Error_Rate 0x000a 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 SMART Error Log Version: 1 No Errors Logged SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1 Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error # 1 Short offline Completed: read failure 20% 21456 2151583487 # 2 Short offline Completed: read failure 20% 21456 2151583475 # 3 Short offline Completed: read failure 20% 20556 2044423822 Right now I'm currently running another preclear cycle on the same machine that it lived in. jbuszkie
Oh.. and now it is throwing errors on the post read! I may have to kill the pre-clear script and it is bringing the system to a halt! Well.. at least Unmenu isn't responding... and the preclear screen session doesn't seem to be updating. Now it make me wonder again about my PSU being an issue... I still don't think so as more than 1/2 my drives were spun down before the errors started showing up. and it failed the seaTools test on a completely different machine and threw ATA errors on an even different machine that I ran the first preclear on the preread?? RMA?? Quote Link to comment

This thing used to click like it had tourettes until I updated the firmware to CC35. ========================================================================1.13 == invoked as: ./preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sdc == ST32000542AS == Disk /dev/sdc has been successfully precleared == with a starting sector of 64 == Ran 1 cycle == == Using :Read block size = 8225280 Bytes == Last Cycle's Pre Read Time : 6:33:11 (84 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Zeroing time : 7:22:40 (75 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Post Read Time : 15:59:56 (34 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Total Time : 29:56:48 == == Total Elapsed Time 29:56:48 == == Disk Start Temperature: 28C == == Current Disk Temperature: 35C, == ============================================================================ ** Changed attributes in files: /tmp/smart_start_sdc /tmp/smart_finish_sdc ATTRIBUTE NEW_VAL OLD_VAL FAILURE_THRESHOLD STATUS RAW_VALUE Raw_Read_Error_Rate = 117 114 6 ok 147307819 Seek_Error_Rate = 38 37 30 near_thresh 10462553746222 Spin_Retry_Count = 100 100 97 near_thresh 0 End-to-End_Error = 100 100 99 near_thresh 0 High_Fly_Writes = 93 95 0 ok 7 Airflow_Temperature_Cel = 65 72 45 In_the_past 35 Temperature_Celsius = 35 28 0 ok 35 Hardware_ECC_Recovered = 53 48 0 ok 147307819 No SMART attributes are FAILING_NOW 0 sectors were pending re-allocation before the start of the preclear. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after pre-read in cycle 1 of 1. 0 sectors were pending re-allocation after zero of disk in cycle 1 of 1. 0 sectors are pending re-allocation at the end of the preclear, the number of sectors pending re-allocation did not change. 0 sectors had been re-allocated before the start of the preclear. 0 sectors are re-allocated at the end of the preclear, the number of sectors re-allocated did not change. ============================================================================ Disk: /dev/sdc smartctl 5.40 2010-10-16 r3189 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-10 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Model Family: Seagate Barracuda LP Device Model: ST32000542AS Serial Number: Firmware Version: CC35 User Capacity: 2,000,398,934,016 bytes Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show] ATA Version is: 8 ATA Standard is: ATA-8-ACS revision 4 Local Time is: Sat Mar 17 01:12:41 2012 Local time zone must be set--see zic m SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. Joe L.
I don't love the seek-error-rate. The normalized value of 38 is uncomfortably getting close to the SMART failure threshold of 30. (typically parameters start at 100, or 200 when factory new. Your other parameters are mostly 100, so I'm guessing that is the initial value.) It is an indication of drive wear, so if it gets worse over the next few months consider a replacement. That seek-error-rate might also explain the clicking...or vice versa... Of course, it could be an effect of the old firmware, but keep an eye on it. Quote Link to comment
grither
hi, a bit of a newb here... i ran preclear on 3 drives, and got email notifications that each drive passed, but where can i find the actual detailed reports like the ones posted in this thread? Quote Link to comment
