Hi,

UnRAID newb here. I finally got my system set up, and finished the pre-clears of my 160gig cache drive, and 2 of my 1TB drives. But the results of my 1TB drives worry me a little - see below:

It seems both drives complained about heat, so I'll resolve that with better ventilation.

But drive one also reported an end to end error. I'm not sure what this means.

I should add that previously, drive 1 was in another PC with what I believe to be a faulty SATA controller. Could these errors be a left-over from that?

Any comments or advice?

Thanks!

I do not think either drive is completely safe to use, but, on the other hand, there has only been one re-allocated sector and they did pre-clear.

SMART values do not usually recover from FAILING_NOW.

I have no idea what an "end-to-end" error is.

Both drives have been in an environment of very high heat.  (55C = 131 F).

I would not trust the pre-clear under such high heat.  (things expand under high heat, and track alignment is just too critical)

Get the temperature under control, then perhaps preclear again.

Finished running my first 4 drives and need some guidance interpreting the results.  My apologies if I've posted the wrong info or too much info.  I wasn't really sure what should be included or the easiest way to present it, so I attached the full TXT file as well.

The only thing that I glean from the reports is the End-To-End Error on /dev/sda ST31500541 AS_5XW0270P.  Not sure if it is a deal breaker or not though.  Ultimately, I have two additional WD750GB and two newer Seagate 2TB drives with all my data on them (~4.5TB).  I need to have enough space available on the unRAID server to be able to transfer the info over and free up the Seagate 2TB drives for preclear and addition to the array, recognizing I can do one drive at a time, etc.  I was planning on using the Seagate 80GB as my cache drive.

Any input as to the offline uncorrectable and pending sector counts would be appreciated!!!

Apparently, on this drive, the sectors were able to be re-written to their original locations and then read successfully.  There was no need to re-allocate them.

Does that mean the drive corrected itself? Or is this a leading indicator of future failure? Should I RMA the disk?

Also, for the first disk I posted above about, 2 sectors had been re-allocated before the preclear and then there were still 2 re-allocated. The number did not increase, so the disk is fine? Or should I RMA that one?

Thanks for your help!!!

I would use both of them in the array.

All disks will experience un-readable blocks over their lifetime.  That the number of un-readable blocks did not increase is good.  (if it increased each time you ran a preclear cycle it would be an indication of a disk starting to fail)

Yes, that first drive corrected itself.  Perhaps when the sectors that were marked as un-readable were written the drive experienced some vibration, or a power fluctuation, or something else to make the write perform poorly.

The "write" in the preclear did work.  There was no need to re-allocate the sector.

Ran latest "preclear_disk.sh /dev/sdb" thinking the value in Settings > Disk Settings > "Default partition format" would be considered automatically. 26 hours later and added into the new array with no data yet added... Next time I will be using "-A" switch to ensure the MBR is set correctly but is there anyway to fix this without doing the whole 26 hour operation again?

Examined the the Seagate Barracuda "ST2000DL003":

If you've already added it to the array, no.  It is no longer pre-cleared as unRAID has written to it.

If you had not yet assigned it to the array, then it is simple to change the partitioning using the -C option in preclear_disk.sh

However, it is perfectly fine as you have it.  The ONLY drives with the performance issue are Western Digital EARS drives.  They have firmware that works less efficiently if not aligned on a 4K boundry.  No other drives have this issue.

Please post the preclear report for that drive.  you'll find it in /boot/preclear_reports  I'll be curious to what it says.

I had some kind of serious issues using the preclear script, I am linking to the thread describing them:

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=18896.0

Interesting, but the preclear script does nothing that the unRAID array will do itself when calculating parity or re-constructing a failed drive.  It reads and write to the failed disk.  (exactly like a parity check/calc or disk re-construction, it reads/writes the entire disk)

The preclear script does invoke the smartctl program on the drive hundreds/thousands of times on the drive.  unRAID uses native system calls to do the same.  That is the only significant difference.

The hardware will likely cause you the same errors once you put the disk into service.  I wish you luck but I have nothing to suspect anything other than a bad drive.  I've seen drives stop responding before... It seems like this is a case of this.

We'll soon see.  As you said, unRAID is clearing your drive.  I would, if I were you, once assigned, see if you can get through a manual parity check.

Hello,

I'm running a pre-clear right now.  Its a new 2TB EARX, connected to a Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 (also has 2 array drives connected to it), and I haven't seen the read speed pass 95MB/s.

Is this a limit of the card?  Should I be pre-clearing on mobo sata?  Would I get better performance with a 3ware 9650SE-8LPML?

Thanks,

Hi,

I did just that, all ok. Also SMART results are ok, with small and large test, no significant errors.  The fact that you mention that the script does the same action but thru different calls sounds like the reason to me.. Also note that some other users had the exact same issue.. Disk is performing without an issue, I'll check back in a couple of weeks to confirm !

UPDATE: Disk got thrown out of the array, totally failed.. Checking it on a windows box with the correct western digital analysis tool also told me to contact tech support.. So drive was indeed kaput.. Preclearing the new drive resulted in a load of red errors again but only for a few minutes, after that it went on, drive has now been in for several days and is working beautifully (store gave me a new one right away).

So I was getting some ATA errors on this drive when doing a parity check.  It even red-balled.  So I took the files off

the drive and I took it out of the array.  I ran SeaTools on it and it failed (but didn't give me an error code)

So the I decided to run it through 2 cycles of preclear.  The first pre-read gave me those ATA errors again.  After that, I don't think I got any more in the post read or the next pre/post read cycle.

There were, at one point, 37 sectors pending re-allocation.

Now there are 0 with none of then being relocated.  so it must have fixed its self

Right now I'm currently running another preclear cycle on the same machine that it lived in. (as opposed to running it on a separate machine where I normally do my pre-clears)  And it got past the preread and is in the post read phase with no ATA errors reported so far.

Now I don't know whether to trust this drive or not.  I have till December to RMA it.  I'm worried if I RMA it they will say the drive is good and not replace it!

what should I do?  Should I add it back to the array or not?

Here is the bits of the preclear rpt.

Oh..  and now it is throwing errors on the post read!  I may have to kill the pre-clear script and it is bringing the system to a halt!

Well..  at least Unmenu isn't responding...  and the preclear screen session doesn't seem to be updating.

Now it make me wonder again about my PSU being an issue...  I still don't think so as more than 1/2 my drives were spun down

before the errors started showing up.  and it failed the seaTools test on a completely different machine and threw ATA errors on an even different machine that I ran the first preclear on the preread??

RMA??

I don't love the seek-error-rate.  The normalized value of 38 is uncomfortably getting close to the SMART failure threshold of 30. (typically parameters start at 100, or 200 when factory new.  Your other parameters are mostly 100, so I'm guessing that is the initial value.) It is an indication of drive wear, so if it gets worse over the next few months consider a replacement.

That seek-error-rate might also explain the clicking...or vice versa...  Of course, it could be an effect of the old firmware, but keep an eye on it.

hi, a bit of a newb here...

i ran preclear on 3 drives, and got email notifications that each drive passed, but where can i find the actual detailed reports like the ones posted in this thread?

in a folder on the flash drive

/boot/preclear_reports (I think)
