Tybio
http://www.anandtech.com/show/9946/seagate-introduces-8-tb-hard-disk-drive-for-nas Seems like a good choice, the Archive drive always worried me for some reason Quote Link to comment
John_M
Me too, at least for use as parity. That new PMR Seagate would make a nice parity disk and then I'd be happy to use the SMR Archive drives as data disks. And I can't believe WD will let it lie: an 8 TB Red must be coming soon. c3
"MSRP of the new 8TB PMR NAS HDD from Seagate will be $385 when it ships later this quarter". Quote Link to comment
ashman70
I assume that is USD? Which means it will be well over $450 for us poor Canadians...... Quote Link to comment
John_M
And not far short of £385 for us even poorer Brits. Quote Link to comment
Chris Pollard
And not far short of £385 for us even poorer Brits. Too true. Robbing bastards. Quote Link to comment
Squid
Still a Seagate! I've got 4 WD drives still left in the servers, and when they're gone I'll be throwing a party. Quote Link to comment
TUMS
When unraid 6.2 (release version) shows up I plan on swapping in 2 6TB Reds as parity. If these are available at the time I might consider it (depending on price) i'm sure these will probably be pretty expensive when they first release it though. Quote Link to comment
danioj
I wonder if the release of these will drive down the cost of the SMR 8TB drives even more! I certainly hope so as I have been more than happy with them and have not seen any difference in speed between them and my 3TB PMR WD Red's! Quote Link to comment
Dephcon
This is amazing! Will make a great parity disk and allow for SMR data disks. Quote Link to comment
John_M
I see that Span.com is claiming pre-availability, though there seems to be some disagreement with the AnandTech article about the spin speed (5900 vs 7200 RPM) and warranty period (2 vs 3 years), though I wasn't far out regarding the price - they're asking for £334.80, including VAT. I think Span is right about the speed (5900 RPM) and AnandTech is right about the warranty (3 years). It looks as though there's a desktop model available too, the ST8000DM002 for £309.60. For comparison, their price for the already established shingled ST8000AS0002 is £211.20. Quote Link to comment
