I guess I would also like an opinion on the Asrock EP2C602. It lacks the "-4L" so only 2 lan ports and only 8 memory slots. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157352&cm_re=EP2C602-_-13-157-352-_-Product

I've got the Asrock EP2C602.

I don't see myself using more then 256GB of ram that this board is capable of, and the extra 2 LAN ports are not hat useful unless you actually have a use for 4 LAN ports. Even then, a dual NIC PCIe card is quite cheap if I find that I need one later.

That was my reasoning for picking up this board over the others.

I think there will be plenty more cheap e5's being dumped on ebay.  It's the sandy bridge motherboards that I would worry about getting.  Afaik they aren't making any more so whatever left out there is it.  Get one while you can... As more people find out about this deal it will only drive prices on the boards up.  Same thing happened with x58, only that was probably worse because the Westmere xeons are overclockable.

I understand all these CPUs are coming from Facebook.  What happened to the motherboards they use to be in at Facebook?

I don't know.  They might not be running in traditional motherboards. But in open compute motherboards like this.

I've been wondering the same thing => seems like an awful lot of CPU's and memory are being dumped ... so you'd think there'd be a correlating supply of motherboards.

@TUMS

Do you know what CPUs Facebook bought to replace these E5s?

I suspect we'll know in 4-5 years when there's a bunch of high-end E5 v3's on the market cheap  :)

@garycase

I'm thinking the same thing. Only this time, I might buy the motherboard while they are still in production and relatively cheap. But that would only make sense if I was sure about what CPU Facebook is using now.

Hehe yeah probably E5 haswell chips if I had to guess.  Hopefully it won't take 5 years for them to show up either.  I WANT THEM NOW! For $70.  lol.

@TUMS,

That makes sense.  That would explain why the ddr3 memory is being dumped since the motherboards for the v3 xeons use ddr4.  When the Westmere xeons were dumped, was there a corresponding dump of memory DIMMs?

I don't think so with the ram but 4 year old used motherboards were going for like $300+.  I could have easily sold my 4 year old used board for as much as I paid for it new.  Instead I chose to replace my I7 950 with a 6 core x5660 xeon.

Got everything put together on the weekend and no post  :-[. Took out CPU2 and left only two sticks and I get video but it’s stuck with 2F on the bottom right.  Bought some additional ram that is confirmed to work with my mobo and am hoping for the best.

Sounds crazy, but confirm your board's CPU/RAM location. Since this is server grade hardware it may be a lot less flexible than consumer hardware.

well since they ran out of the ASrock boards, i decided to go with the intel board from nanex.  I have an older dell perc 5 or 6 pci-e card and some other pci-e sata cards I can use so the lack of ports won't kill me.  I may or may not add the ikvm later, I don't have it today, so can't say if i miss it yet or not.

Ended up savng $150 ish by buying the intel, so let's hope it works out!  dual 2670's and 128GB ram here I come!

If anyone has purchased the Intel S2600CP dual processor motherboard (from www.natex.us), and are in the need of a case with power supply, there are the  *new* 4U Intel Server Chassis's (P4000M family which are designed for the S2600CP mobo) avail on ebay for under $200...  For example, I made an offer of $150 +shipping (which they accepted) for Intel P4308XXMHEN Server Chassis 4U Rack, 550W New Bulk Packaging http://www.ebay.com/itm/182026363400 (8x3.5" hotswap drive bays, single 550 watt PS).

The same seller also has other PS configurations, dual 720watt PS's, dual 460watt PS's, redundant 720watt PS config with only a single PS provided, etc.

They also have the ioshields ($4 accepted offer +shipping) http://www.ebay.com/itm/381121191984 and air duct kits ($10 accepted offer +shipping) http://www.ebay.com/itm/381083917540

Heck, they even accepted my $10 offer (+shipping) for the Intel AXXRMM4 Remote Management Module New Bulk Packaging http://www.ebay.com/itm/201465530335

Picked up one from natex. Even got an email asking if it being a dual nic board was OK. Already shipped. Seems legit enough to me.

:(, looks like they are all sold out of the ASrock D16/L4's. I paid for one on ebay last night just to be sent an email stating they didnt have any in stock to sell me and there was no ETA (obviously) for another shippment. Any recommendations on a similar board that isnt the intel afformentioned? already have the procs on the way and am watching quite a few lots of ram.

The ASRock motherboards are back in stock at Newegg. I just placed my order.

Well now it shows out of stock.. Hopefully my order doesn't get canceled.

Yeah I think its just a finnicky Ram issue.  I bought the exact ram on Supermicros compatibility list now, just need to wait for it to arrive.

Anybody have any thoughts on the two heatsinks below. I'll be using the ASRock EP2C602-4L/D16 SSI EEB Server Motherboard.

I'm not sure that the dual fan heatsink isn't overkill. Any reason why I should need it?

I'm using the Define XL R2 case. I'll be running at most 2 Vm's.

The Scythe Katana 4 is a far cheaper solution.

I ordered the U12DXi4 x 2 and two additional f12 fans. Everything i have read says that it will clear the ram without any issues. Im sure the dual fan option is overkill since these e5 2670s are not overclockable (i may be wrong), but id rather have good flow and you can always use the fans for a case fans in a later build.

another option is the coolermaster hyper 212 evo, but im not sure about the fitment, much cheaper though if you are on a budget.

I have three of the Xi4 (dual fan) running on a single socket SM board and one of the dual socket ASRock boards. They clear the ram and are very quiet, installation was a breeze and they come with everything you need to install on Square or Narrow ILM. I have another Noctua setup on an AMD rig and it's been running for 5 years solid with zero issues.

Thanks for all the info.

I think I'll go with 2 of the NH-U12DXi4 and add more fans if needed.
