How to upgrade an LSI HBA firmware using Unraid

Featured Replies

just a reminder/heads up to people trying to upgrade the FW on the 9300-16i, it has 2 separate SAS3008 controllers on board so you need to flash both of them!

if that is the only card in the system you can use

sas3flash -o -fwall SAS9300-16i_IT.bin

to flash each controller, there is also a command to update certain controllers but this is easier if its the only card you have.

Best to use the DOS or UEFI tools to do any crossflashing and/or other more advanced options, e.g., for some reason erasing the BIOS doesn't work with the Linux version, but if you just need to update firmware it can be easily done with Unraid.

Hello @JorgeB,

If I can add something to this, I didn't find any relevant information with the search I did to avoid double posting.

As I installed this card to IT mode a few days ago, from my searching I found this among other info: Flashing firmware and BIOS on LSI SAS HBAs.

sas2flash and sas3flash executables are used to upgrade the firmware to a newer version.

sas2flsh and sas3flsh executables are used to downgrade firmware and change modes between IR and IT.

I could only find the sas3flsh file needed for 9308 as a DOS .exe file. All other files are available for DOS / Linux / UEFI shell. I did find a ZIP file at Broadcom stating that it had the sas3flsh file for Linux, but when I opened it it had a sas3flash file in it and I didn't try it on unraid to see if they mixed up the filename.

TIP: If anyone tries to make a bootable USB in DOS, you may want to prepare it as an MS-DOS bootable and not as a FreeDOS one; The FreeDOS one kept cutting the VGA signal to my monitor after 30" to 1' and putting it on power-saving without any means to get picture back expect from hard resetting, where as the MS-DOS one didn't. The timing of flashing a card and getting a black screen 3" after you run a command can be confusing.

The UEFI sas3flash file is available in the knowledge base article here. The table is broken, but P14 can be downloaded. There is also a P16 version, if you change the link to P16 instead of P14 like I did here, you can download it directly.

So following the thread and seem that i am not seeing th correct files for the 9300-16i. I can only see the 9300_16i_Package_P16_IT_FW_BIOS_for_MSDOS_Windows. So as per a previous post here people said it was the incorrect one.

Any ideas whare i find the linux version or is there another that is compatible?

You can use the Windows firmware, just need the Linux utility, see the first post.

that worked thanks.. All flashed etc.

By the way, for the 9300-16i, if that's the only device installed, you can simplify flashing a lot by using the -fwall option instead of -f so:

./sas3flash -o -fwall 9300-16i_IT.bin -b mpt3sas.rom -b mpt3x64.rom

Hello. Can anyone help please? Trying to prep an LSI 9211-8i

Im using the saas2flash installer from the sas2flash_linux_ppc64_rel folder

I've got all the files i need mounted in /lsi

I can chmod but then when i try and confirm the adapter , i get this error:
root@Tower:~/lsi# ls

2118it.bin* mptsas2.rom* sas2flash*

root@Tower:~/lsi# chmod +x sas2flash

root@Tower:~/lsi# ./sas2flash -listall

bash: ./sas2flash: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error

root@Tower:~/lsi#

Just worked it out, i needed to use the i686 version. However, it doesn't see my HBA

root@Tower:~/lsi# chmod +x sas2flash

root@Tower:~/lsi# ./sas2flash -listall

Have x2 9207-8i flashed latest firmware in it mode + bios + efi bsd.

Also x12 HDDs (hba sas2sata) + 3ssd (sata MB)

Some time after boot, unraid not starting Becouse in log I found one hdd was empty, second hdd was missed.

(Was thinking psu sata connectors issue 650w, updated to 1000w psu. )

But after boot all disk presents and can start manually.

Can be issue Becouse both lsi cards have bios flashed and it couse some low init on boot?

Sounds unlikely to me; recommend starting a new thread in the general support forum and posting the diagnostics.
