  1. What kind of speeds do you get? pre-clearing? / partity checking? because these multipliers connect 5 sata on a single mainbord sata ports without using pci / pci-x or pci-express slots
  2. LyCom ST-126 SATA II 3Gbps 1-To-5 Port Multiplier PCI Low Profile Host Adapter. http://www.lycom.com.tw/st126.htm around 55 € over here maybe a bulk buy direct from Taiwan can make them a lot cheaper? a few questions? * Could This work with Unraid ? You dont even have to sacrifice a Pci-E slot. * Does anyone has something like this running with UnRaid? (particular this one , or similar card ) * Doesn't this slow everything down? now 5 HDD on 1 sata port? Update: Seems that Addonics also has some of these SATA Multipliers http://www.addonics.com/products/host_controller/ad5sapm.asp
  3. and 541 Power on Hours later i noticed that the total LCC counts (Load Cycle Count's) is a lot lower then the WD20EARS series : 410 counts = 0,75 per hour In comparising to the WD20EARS : 8089 counts for 3380 Power on Hours = 2,4 per hour Can not explain it directly because the firmware is the same version (51.0AB51)
  4. Not if you want to use it for those 8 Dollar a piece Ebay Sata pci-E cards- it wil give you 14 sata ports for a low budget
  5. For European users looking for a cheap case (can't see any US resellers of Ms-tech) a nice discrete black case (inside and outside) with 9 x 5.25 and mesh top for a budget price MS-Tech CA-210 around 33 to 37 € http://www.ms-tech.de/eng/index.php/product/detail/pdcid/65/pdid/226

    Time to upgrade

read this topic http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=9865.0 Just buy the WD20EARS! :-) The community has good experience with this WD20EARS drives You already have them, and the prices only dropped over time They are quiet, cheap, green, etc etc etc From the Netherlands i presume? Redcoon has the 20EARS for 60,5 € and if you are willing to try something else? then try the Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000
  7. Maybe a comment for that USB stick Make sure it has a Unique Flash GUID: so if you buy a plus or a Pro licence ,, Tom can generate also a unique register-key file for you. Otherwise you will be stuck to the free 3 drive version.

Take the Western Digital, - It looks so nice in your UnRaid overview!! :-) If you can spend 0,78 € cents more you have the WD20EARX from Azerty.nl :-) It's the SATA600 version of the WD20EARS. I have both types,, the EARX is giving me standard a lot less LCC counts (Load Cycle Count's) 408 counts for 521 Power on Hours = 0,78 per hour In comparising to the WD20EARS : 8085 counts for 3360 Power on Hours = 2,4 per hour Think WD changed that agressive timing for this newer series? I have them unjumpered in 4.7 plus
  9. @ Alecthar,, oke for me,, from what country are you? it's a big box!! i paid €30 for it,, if i can get that in return that would be fine by me! Yes, yes I am. It's been at least a few months since I roadtripped over to the Low Countries, I can pick it up in person.
  10. That case has 9 front 5.25 bays , so 3 of them will fit The Lancool is in the gallery on the frontpage of lime-tech with 3 Supermicro 5 in 3's http://www.lime-technology.com/products/md-1510-server/56 or the newegg's product photo's of the Lancool when you look at the photo of the inside : i don't see those metal tabs between the slots you have to usually grind away to make a 5 in 3 slide-in : making it really easy without modification.
  11. :-) Rajahal,, That were my first thought's also when i found the pictures of that xigmatek case on Newegg!! Can't judge taste !! but noway that case will come in my house! , it's just too much '' Pimp my Case'', for a young dude who want's a cheap-ass gaming rig and show off to his Lan-party Brother's that would be oke! I personally like the more discrete, business look for my UnRaid server, No clear side windows or too much fans with too flashy colored led's visible from the outside. More like Lian-Li PC50 Armorsuit kinda style, Or the also obsolete Lancool PC-K12B,, Wow i really like that one. Anyone over here want's to get rid of that uber-discrete Lancool case? Can't take the credit for that Xigmatek,, User dgaschk aka David found this one.
  12. How much did the CM590 cost? I mean, I assume the price in Euros is after VAT, which in Germany at least is 19%. So the price of the case, minus 19%, converted to USD is around 90 bucks, give or take a few bucks based on the current Euro rate. And that ignores that the cost of items (once again, at least in Germany) is usually priced fairly closely to what those items cost in USD. Just because it only takes .65 Euros to buy a Dollar doesn't mean you'll spend .65 Euros to buy something in a German store that would cost a buck in an American one, so I'd bet stateside pricing would probably be closer to $75 than $90. Don't know what the CM590 did cost in Dollar back in the days when it was available in USA , but i know that they sold it over here in Belgium/The Netherlands also around 70 to 75 € I bought 2 pieces second-hand, but i really like the looks of that Nexus one,, ( closed side panels and the design of the fan-panel on top) maybe it's time to change :-) Anyone interested in a CM590?
  13. if you can't find a Coolermaster CM590 for your 3 X 5 in 3's ? i think i found a direct clone from Nexus. Front is a little bit different but the inside looks the same. And standard comes with 2 x 4 in 3's and some accoustic material on the side panels. The inside from the Xigmatek Utgard Mesh CPC-T90DB-U03 also looks like that, (Good price for that case i think : 60 Dollar) Nexus Prominent 9 http://www.nexustek.nl/nexus_prominent9_premium_silent_pc_case.htm The Nexus is around 70 to 75 € over here.
  14. @Alecthar Very clean job,, In case you've already build your UnRaid server,, i am very curious what kind of drive-temps you get with these 92 fans,, (Also tell what type of drives you use,) I have the same 5 in 3 Cages and also considering this modification. (not having problems with the sata-ports)
  15. :-) a lot of DIY'ing with UnRaid, but i've never been happy'er with a NAS. About the screws: In each box with a 5 in 3 cage from X-Case i got 2 little plastic bags with at least 30 of perfectly fitting tiny screws to fit for those hard-drive bays. didn't you got those with your Norco's? For the standard fans of my X-CASE KIT-XX500 : (Can't speak for the Norco's) They are one the edge of beying LOUD: high RPM fans with really good airflow; they kept my WD20EARS steady on 28C Celsius , even with parity check or pre-clearing. (standard fans are from GAO NONG MOTORS CHINA - DC Brushless model GNF802512HS DC12V 0.26A ) But they are too loud for me , so i changed them with a 80mm NF-R8 Noctua (Easy to swap) Really Quiet but not so steady and low in temp. anymore. normal progress , between 32 and 34 with peaks to 38, and when parity checking for hours then they can rise up to 42c. I'm thinking of changing the backplate to make a 92mm fan possible with a Dremel. I have a couple of HP 92mm case fans with 4 pin PWN laying around. (HP P/N 392185-001 ) for connecting directly to the supermicro mainbord. (the C2SEE has 3 , 4 pins PWN fan connectors just at the right places for these hotswap cages) About the LED's: Each hard-drive bay has a (left) green and (right) blue LED: The green ones are permanent on, ( all 5 ) and the blue one's blink showing hard-drive activity. ( all 5 ) All the drive-bays in my top cage are filled with hard-drives.
  16. Yezz,, i did,, With the case still empty i first tried to bend them, but a NO GO for me and my limited set of tools. then i tried with a big metal file,,(is that the right word?) to get rid of all the metal tabs,, but 30 minutes later , a sore hand and only 5 tabs further :-( i gave up. Went to the garage with the case and took my smallest angle grinder and carefully got rid of all of them within minutes. In the picture you see that in some places the metal got a little hot and has a different color.
  17. Just wanted to let everyone know,,if you are searching just as me for a second Unraid server ( Small drive build/low budget/low power) i think i found something I found a business pc HP DC7700 convertable midi-tower pc to be ( sort of) compatible with UnRaid,, for the moment just a 3 drive build for further testing with build 5beta7 specs: Case: very robust,,and heavy,, high quality thick steel, just a discrete midi-tower, maybe a little boring for some. Micro-atx socket 775 , standard with core 2 duo 6300 , but i put in a low power Celeron 430 and after a bios-upgrade (V03.05) it's being recognized properly. and updated the V-pro ME firmware,, , but do it in the right order!! first the V-Pro Me firmware and secondly the normal Bios , than you should not get any problems using V-pro. Standard 92mm cpu cooler is 4 wire PWN and quiet Case Cooler is 92 mm and 4 wire PWN and quiet 385 watt Power-supply 80 plus power efficiency with active PFC ( not single rail, but still 14.5 A and 12A maximum load @ 12V Intel PRO 82566DM gigabit onboard NIC Intel Q965/Q963 express chipset ICH8 D0 , (isn't this the same as the Asus P5B-VM DO Lime-Tech Official recommended board) i also want a working S3 Onboard VGA 4 x SATA 4 x DDR 2 SLOTS 1 x PCI-E 16X 1 x PCI-E X1 2 x PCI Quick Boot from USB Built in V-PRO AMT/ME SOL chip for remote management in BIOS, remote on/off , got it working with free Radmin viewer 3 Case has 3 5.25 slots , so put in a cheap coolermaster 4 in 3 (STB-3T4-E3-GP) and a 8 dollar ebay 2 ports sata card together with the standard capacity of 2 x 3.5 HDD , you will have room for 6 drives with the standard case (4 data drives + cache + parity , 8TB or without cache drive 10TB Mainbord partnumber 404673-001 This seems the right picture of the mainbord http://www.comused.com/media/06/a20792b12fe548e987c7e3_m.JPG Anyone else running a DC7700 (RN122ET) with unraid? Any comments / remarks for this setup,, and to get S3 working are welcome
  18. True, best to keep it in English I'm from Oostkamp by the way. Back on-topic The motherboard that I choose has 2x (x8) PCI-E 2.0 slots and 2x (x4) PCI-E 2.0 in slots. Any advice on the PCI-E cards? I need a total of 10 extra sata. I prefer minimal sata II and if possible support for the new 3TB drives. I don't want it to be too expensive. Also I would like to use the Seasonic X-460 Fanless as psu. http://www.seasonicusa.com/NEW_X-series_Fanless.htm As I saw in the psu thread that the Seasonic X-400 Fanless can power 15 green drives I suppose the Seasonic X-460 Fanless can power 16 of them. But will it be enough to power the extra pci-e cards? I really like the Seasonic x-400 /x-460 Fanless models,, they have 33A and 38A power on a single rail , so just perfect ; quiet en very efficient 80 plus gold. I'm thinking to get one of these when my server build will exceed more than 10 drives. In that supermicro board you chose you have the luxery of having 4 pci-e slots ,, if you want a cheap way of filling those and get 8 sata ports extra , (including the 6 onboard gives you a cheap way of getting 14 sata ports) then maybe you give these a try. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=10165.0 Or you try a mix of the common used and tested with unraid Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 and 1 extra 8 dollar Ebay card So you have 6 + 8 + 2 = 16 sata ports http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SASLP-MV8.cfm Or this newer model AOC-SASLP-MV8 = SATA600 http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SAS2LP-MV8.cfm
  19. Belgie, Oudenaarde hier,, heheheh laten we het maar Engels houden he , kan de rest ook volgen! for the case and stacker modules,, a nice cheap build to get room for 16 drives but changing disks,, isn't so easy,, This case can hold 4 times 5 in 3 Hotwap bays for a total build of 20 drives , but you pay a lot more for those hotswap bays then the cheap CM 4 in 3's. advantage is the big fan for good cooling and you can run this low rpm
  20. A little tip for the CPU: The Intel i3 2100T is the energy efficient version, 35watt TDP versus 65watt for the 2100 without T. and also the clock frequency is lower 2500, instead of 3100mhz When the server will idle for most of the time, i would install the T version and when needed you have more than enough cpu power. The T version gives you lower power consumption and less heat, so you can install lower rpm fans for cpu, case etc , more silence for the living room. The i3-2100 is better available and a few € / Dollar cheaper in most shops, but for the little difference i would choose the T version for your 16 drive build. I see a lot of shop links/url to Afuture.nl !!! a new Dutch Unraid user maybe?
  21. My Centurion 590 with 3 x XX500 5 in 3's ,, I ordered them from Xcase.co.uk and they are Norco SS500 lookalikes,rebranded, clones. http://www.xcase.co.uk/hotswap-stoarge-kit-p/hddkit-xx-500.htm http://www.dumpyourphoto.com/files2/64076/IvwJesbZn8C.jpg
  22. i bought one of these WD20EARX yesterday, is pre-clearing at the moment, but seems to be the same in firmware as my other WD20EARS it's a WDC WD20EARX-00PASB0 51.0AB51 , keep you guys posted for further results
  23. Try Iperf (package install on raid server) and you should install a java package on you pc: you can test the max troughput of your network. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=10771.0 but for what i'm reading on this forum your speeds with that set-up are quite normal
  24. ;D , No it's not bad,, i only noticed the big difference writing speeds with a single disk windows environment. i thought something was wrong,, but now realising that it's not so bad at all with a WD-Green as a parity drive. did the test,, Win7 pc directly to G-bit router with patchcable of 2 mtr, and UNRAID server directly with patchcable of 2mtr ,, i did noticed some improvement in write speeds, but not much. i had to pump over 3TB of data and that took ages ,but even SATA to SATA would take long, now that's done.
  25. Both Joe and Spectrum thnx for the tips and explanation, My main desktop is a X58 mainbord , i7 920 , 6GB DDR3 and sata 2 7200 rpm disk in combination with a onboard Gbit Nic (Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20) It's connected to the G-bit router with a 2mtr Cat5E patchcable to Wall-socket > 8 to 10mtr's cat5E in the wall > out of the wall in garage to the g-bit router. I will try a direct cable, without the wall-socket and try another desktop. will post results
