February 6, 201115 yr I am beginning to rip dvd and blu rays for my unraid server that is being built. I plan on using a PS3 for one room to stream from server. I have some tivos also but have not decided on the streaming device in the other rooms yet. I have ripped a few dvd's already using DVDfab and ripped them into VOB files. I then go back and merge all the VOB files into a single VOB. I would like to get some opinions on what file type to use before I get too involved in the ripping process. I am also ripping cd's and putting them in FLAC. I wonder how much lower quality 320kb MP3 would?
February 6, 201115 yr Author Yeah I have been reading a little bit today and hearing a lot of suggestions of MKV.
February 6, 201115 yr It's really a personal preference on how you rip your shows/movies. I rip in native video_ts folders for movies. For TV series I do the same as you creating single vob files per episode using dvdshrink. With the software use for playback (wmc7 + media browser) I have no reason to rip in any other format.
February 6, 201115 yr Author What programs are you using? I am using DVDfab and it rips into multiple VOB files and I need to go back and merge them.
February 6, 201115 yr I use DVDFab in "Main title mode", and convert the files with Handbrake to a mkv file. This way I get a single file containing only the movie and the languages I want ( usually German and English). And the files are acceptable in size, about 2 gig for a DVD and 8 gig for a Blu-ray. Only problem is the time it takes to convert the files... must be my crappy CPU, an E8700. My next machine is an i7, for sure.

I don't compress mine so I can't say anything about the quality of compression in DVDFab however.

February 7, 201115 yr I rip mine to iso. I wrote a utility to automate the ripping/conversoin to iso. You can check it out here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7045.0
February 7, 201115 yr Which MKV do you use? Not sure I understand the question but here goes. I use DVDFab "BluRay Ripper" to rip BluRays directly to a single ".mkv" file. It does no re-encoding just a copy from the .m2ts files(usually is multiple files) to a single ".mkv" file. Although lately (since version 8.0 came out) I've been ripping to a single ".m2ts" file. I haven't bought the DVD portion. At least not yet but when I expand the options on the "DVD Ripper" it looks like it should rip to single files there as well. For DVDs (which I don't buy any more - if I can help it anyway - just BluRays) I'm still using AnyDVD and CloneDVD mobile to rip to single files.

Would the mkv file be an exact copy of the movie? Does mkv stream well to most streaming devices?

But I do remember setting size to BD-50 which I assume is a dual layer BluRay since there is a BD-25 as well. I used the maximum for this so that NO compression would be needed - probably similar for DVDs.
February 7, 201115 yr Are you guys running PS3's that are mentioning MKV's? Since thats what the OP is going to be watching them on. I normally use DVDFab as well to MKV or I use MakeMKV, but I'm watching my files on a XBMC setup.
February 7, 201115 yr Well I don't use DVDFab ripper to produce my MKV files, because a) there is only one audio track possible (at least as far as I've checked that) and I absolutely want german AND the original soundtrack (believe me, some movies are almost unwatchable with german synchro speakers). But what absolutely keeps me off the built in conversion is that my DivX player tells me that the mkv file is not playable without any additional codecs. I fear that XBMC might get hickup too. For now I rip the files with DVDFab an Handbrake is running on some computers to do the math. Believe me, if you ever thought "well, my computer is fast enough for the work I do daily", it is not fast enough for rendering videos. Just laughed out loud when I checked my old Athlon 3000+ - I get avg FPS of 5. A DVD takes 8 hours to be completed ... well, but it saves me 2 hours on my faster PCs. Just wondering - is the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T faster than the quad code i7's at Handbrake?
February 7, 201115 yr I use DVDFab to make iso's but I also convert the movies for iphone with handbrake. Handbrake uses 100% of all 4 Phenom cores like no other app I've seen. I also happen to have a laptop with an intel i7. The i7 in a notebook runs at 1.6 Ghz (hard to believe isn't it). It's about the same time for encoding. A desktop running an i7 full out would no doubt beat mine hands down. Handbrake would max both of them out to 100% on all cores and I'd bet money the amd 6 core would produce more heat than an i7. For other normal daily use I can't tell the difference between my i7 and my Phenom x4.
February 8, 201115 yr We rip "main movie" with DVDfab for DVDs - or use the DVDfab to extract main movie from blurays and Ripbot to convert the stream to MKV. The quality of the DVDfab MKV's product was suspect on certain movies. A YAMJ index shortcut on a HTPC desktop works great for playback using Arcsoft TotalMedia 3 (PowerDVD can't play from video_ts.ifo) or the VLC player depending on content. We're using the 5150 skin to display 8 X 3, so 24 movies per page on a large LCD TV. Select a movie and the next page gives a larger image along with details and a "play" button. Take the time to tell Windows how to open each file-type and it works seamlessly... A friend of mine created a script that "reads" the html created by YAMJ and appends "video_ts.ifo" any time file:///N:/Collection/??/VIDEO_TS/ is found. Running the script allows pointing to the .ifo in each DVD folder, and it skipps the avi;mkv;m2ts;mp4;etc that YAMJ configures correctly.

February 8, 201115 yr As uncompressed Blu-rays are taking a lot of space (only the main movie is about 13 [star Wars Clone Wars] to 26 GB [Casino Royale]), I have to compress them. But as far as I've noticed the quality does not suffer. I compress the Blu-rays with CF 20 in HandBrake, which leads to files sized 3 [star Wars Clone Wars] to 9 GB [Hellboy]. Uncompressed my library of Blu-rays would be 9 TB, compressed it seems I can store about 2-3 times more movies. 9 TB doesn't sound to much, but if you consider that my DVD library is huge too (I currently fill 16 TB with DVDs alone) and I want some place to store my bacups and audio files to, size matters. BTW I've noticed that streaming my compressed mkv files needs a lot less bandwith. Can any one confirm that streaming compressed via WLAN of the same movie works with compressed files and doesn't work with uncompressed files?
February 9, 201115 yr BTW I've noticed that streaming my compressed mkv files needs a lot less bandwith. Can any one confirm that streaming compressed via WLAN of the same movie works with compressed files and doesn't work with uncompressed files? To stream raw uncompressed Blu-ray files your wireless at needs to shift around 50Mbits/s (video+audio) of raw data. Now if you have compressed your Blu-ray files then the amount of data that needs to be sent will be much less than 50Mbits/s, depending on your compression settings. Now the 802.11 n standard theoretically has the ability to stream up to 150Mbits/s. However, in the real world the actual performance is determined by many environmental factors. Thus, some people's environment will allow the streaming of uncompressed Blu-ray files, and other with the exact same equipment may not be able to. If you cannot stream uncompressed, then there are methods out there to help improve your wireless performance.

I checked and this is what I use for BluRays and DVDs (or would use if I had purchased the DVD ripping): BluRay copy - full disk (to ISO): BD-50 so that no compression is done BluRay ripper (to m2ts): passthrough so that no compression is done BluRay ripper (to mkv): passthrough so that no compression is done DVD copy - full disk (to ISO): DVD9 so that no compression is done DVD ripper (to VOB): passthrough so that no compression is done I also select all the audio tracks on these so that I have all those options as well. I haven't purchased the BluRay 3D ripper yet.
