February 16, 20251 yr Can an optical drive - a BD RW - be connected via the SATA on these PCIE LSI cards? Or would it need to be connected to the SATA on the mobo?
February 16, 20251 yr Author I would expect it to work with any SATA AHCI controller, Asmedia, JMB, etc, but not with LSI HBAs or similar SAS controllers.
February 25, 20251 yr just purchased this hba and seems to work but having a weird issue. has anyone had issues with the web gui only working for about 30 seconds before not being able to connect? other then that the server appears to be functioning

February 28, 20251 yr I have an UnRAID server where I’m looking to cut LSI 9300-16i and 9300-8e HBA’s (flashed to IT Mode) connected to 25 SATA hard drives down to a single HBA to free a PCI slot, and I’m wondering if the Broadcom 9500-8i HBA along with SAS expanders will allow me to do this without creating a bottleneck. My plan would be to connect this 9500-8i to a PCIe 5.0x8 motherboard slot, and then use a single port 8X SFF-8654 to dual port 4X SFF-8643 cable to connect this HBA to an Adaptec AEC-82885T SAS expander located in the same PC case as this HBA. 4 of the internal SFF-8643 ports of the SAS expander would connect to 16 SATA hard drives located in the same PC case (Fractal Meshify 2 XL). The 2 external SFF-8644 ports of the SAS expander would connect to the same 2 external ports of another SAS expander of the same model, located in a different PC case (another Fractal Meshify 2 XL). That 2nd PC case currently contains 6 SATA hard drives, but that number will grow over time. The 2 SAS expanders would be connected to Molex only for power and not connected to a PCI slot on a motherboard. Would the 9500-8i HBA be able to run that many SATA hard drives without creating a bandwidth bottleneck, and do you know of any issues I might have or of a better way for me to get by with only a single HBA? Thanks. Edited February 28, 20251 yr by zoiks66

March 12, 20251 yr I have added a svnxingtii 9207-8i HBA (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BXPWJLM6?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title#productDetails) to my ASUS Prime Z790-V AX WiFi DDR5 Motherboard (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D12KQPJP?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title) and it is not showing up in the bios nor the drives. Are there any special changes I should look for in the bios to make it work? FYI, when I first set it all up on this new build that I moved all drives and thumb drive over to, Unraid saw the 5 drives that were attached to the HBA. In fact, I even installed a second parity drive... Unraid did it's thing and both parity drives are green, but they are plugged into the motherboard, not the HBA. But over night, all the 5 dives that are on the HBA are missing. Thank you in advance for any help. tower-diagnostics-20250311-2206.zip

March 12, 20251 yr Im just putting a new build together (Strangely going from an old Dell server to a custom build tower (Fractal Design R5).. Unsure on the Mobo yet (I may well use my older X570M pro4 Mobo which has 2 PCIe 4.0 x16), however have just managed to pick one of these up... LSI 9400-16i SAS HBA IT Mode (SATA,SAS,NVME). SAS 3416 Chipset, PCIe 3.1 x8 Images attached... Its a system pull, and does bare all the hallmarks of a genuine card. Seller tells me it's been stripped of the bios. It comes with 2x SFF-8643 cables and also two SAS cables, which by my reckoning should allow me to be able to run 8xSAS and 8xSATA if needed. Anyone forsee any issues with this card at all please? Thanks

March 14, 20251 yr Could stuff like this be recommended? I don't find any recommendations for cards that can controll over 6 disks in this thread - i could be wrong but it would be nice to cover something like 10 disks. LSI SAS 9300 16I HBA-kort, 12 Gbit/s SATA SAS Port HBA

March 20, 20251 yr I bought a pc without looking up a lot of info and am installing unraid. Seeing some weird things when copying data. I guess my SATA card is not the best one? I need about 10. https://www.delock.com/produkt/89384/merkmale.html

March 20, 20251 yr Thank you. I am using a setup without parity and with a large cache; is the negative impact of a port multiplier mainly due to writing between disks. In my case it will mostly be sequential? Just to better understand how quickly I should look for alternatives.

It will be mostly visible during a parity check or disk rebuild, or writes with turbo write enabled, also, they have a tendency to cause timeouts and other errors, so it may not be just a performance issue.
March 20, 20251 yr Alright clear. I am indeed seeing it transferring my data and setting up first time. 30secs full speed 10sec lagging. ordered a new one. Too bad, the first one was expensive as well.
April 24, 20251 yr Recently upgraded my unraid to an Asrock X670E Pro RS. Got everything booted up, but am not seeing any of the sata ports from the controller (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09BMBPZLZ?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_10&th=1). It worked perfectly in my old build, but not showing in bios at all on the new AM5 build. Not sure if maybe its an issue with am5 vs am4, or it being a pcie 4.0 slot instead of the pcie 3.0 i had before. Any suggestions on a new controller? With it not even showing in bios, im thinking it may be a hardware issue as it was randomly disconnecting even in the old unit.
