The CPU died and got replaced under warranty, I now have the latest 'safe' BIOS but the system keeps throwing kernel errors and crashing. It could be memory, it could be the HBA, it could be the motherboard. Who knows? It is a nightmare and I can't swap components around as I simply don't have any spare components because I didn't buy two systems...like a normal person.

 

Long story short a new PC might be the only way out of the current hole - it will be more cost/time effective than replacing one part after another. My whole beef is that I don't want to go to AMD, and I also don't want to go back to an i7 from the 14th gen as that pretty much puts me back where I am now. So I'm pretty darn stuck as Arrow lake is new (and I might be swapping one set of bugs for another) and it's not fully supported by Unraid (e.g. no transcoding).

 

So I have no idea what to do now. Arrow Lake? Take my chances with the older generation with problems I'm already having? If I do go Arrow Lake I have to pay a premium an then buy an Arc GPU on top of that.....

look forward not back was my motto, all im currently losing is the igpu whilst gaining better thermals and power efficiency , and eventually the igpu will roll out down the track, the arc a310's are cheap and transcode well and in the scheme of things was the cheapest componont of this upgrade.

For some reason The only Intel Arc graphics cards on the market here are the Intel Arc A750....there seems to be nothing else....it's crazy.....

 

Right now I'm running memtest again....2 passes in, still nothing. It's not definitive unless it fails, so you are ending up in a position where it it "might not be" the memory....I hope it isn't my LSI HBA. 😞

 

In the meantime I'm pulling together a price for an AMD-based solution and soon a Intel Core Ultra solution....

Hopefully the LTS version of kernel 6.12 will be announced very soon, as the stable released a couple of weeks back, and fix any compatiblity/driver issues with 'Arrow Lake'"/15th gen, including the GPU. That is if Unraid decides to throw in the most recent LTS kernel prior to launching 7.0, but I reckon odds are good they will.

I'm very hopeful that the next beta / rc of Unraid 7 adds support for the 245K, right now I have added my Arc A380 to compensate, although no iGPU / dGPU still worked fine to transcode Plex, barely saw CPU usage go up

 

I also got an Asus Z890M but my Network is scuffed and I get no internet on it (`eth0` missing, and any other interface that is not `bond0` or `lo`) if anyone has any ideas then please tell, I've updated BIOS and done a lot of troubleshooting.

Got a 1gbps card installed just to be able to use it for now

Have you tried looking here? The board should be using the RTL8125 chip as I understand it.  If you install that driver plugin, it might fix the issue. I'm new to Unraid so just throwing it out there/yet to try it myself...

 

 

Are you happy with the board/setup otherwise?

The 8125 nic on the asus z890-p does not work in unraid 7 b4 , its seen and loading the 8125 chipset drivers made it work , I'm using a tx401 nic so had nothing to lose

This worked!

 

It disabled my external network card but it enabled my on-board to work!

 

I am enjoying everything so far, even had my first test-run using my UPS backup today by accident while I was at work, it lasted 22 minutes before shutdown, and that's with the setting to turn off 10 minutes before power runs out.

Linux Kernel 6.12 is now the latest LTS version (EoL Dec, 2026). I hope it will be included in Unraid 7 before final release, let's see. Everything should work directly out of the box with Arrow Lake and 6.12.  It should also offer better performance on both Arrow Lake and Zen 5.

I am also curious whether it is still possible to switch to 6.12 LTS. I actually see almost only advantages here. Limetech would have the latest LTS kernel at the start and would not have to backport the 6.6 used. OpenZFS has also been on 2.2.7 since yesterday and supports the 6.12 kernel.

 

Of course, I don't know how much effort Limetech will have to put into switching to the 6.12 kernel. It would certainly be welcome. We've been waiting so long for Unraid 7 that one more month won't make any difference 🙂

 

Just received my Motherboard (ASUS Z890M Plus WiFi) and been doing some quick and dirty testing to gauge the best settings with regard to performance/watt for the Intel 245K. 

 

Based on the data below, I will set PL1/Pl2 to 55W.  If you want to maximaze performance/watt as much as possible, the way to go is likely 40W-35W. 

 

Total power usage (ASUS Z890M Plus WIFi, Intel 245K, Cooler Master GX III 750W ATX 3.0, 990 Pro 4TB, 2x48GB Crucial 5600 1.1V, 2xNoctua 62mm, 2xNoctua 120mm) : 

• Idle PL1/PL2 55W: ~45W
• Full load on all cores with 55W PL1/PL2: ~82W 
• Full load on all cores with 159W PL1/PL2:  ~160W 

Note that this is on Windows 11 with WiFi enabled and I've not changed any other settings other than PL1/PL2 in BIOS. I will try and lower idle usage by tinkering with more settings. Also, I'm yet to add any of my HDDs to the build.

Note that single thread performance starts to suffer at 30W or below in GB6!

Running 7.0.0-rc.2 now. Forgot to disable Fastboot in BIOS->Boot at first, so the darn thing wouldn't boot after the first reboot Just displayed a black screen and couldn't connect, sigh. Took some time figuring out why.

 

Another issue was installing the RTL8125(B) PCI Drivers through the apps repository to get the NIC working (ASUS Z890M WiFi Plus). If you have no other NIC/ethernet adapter available, you can just download the PLG file and put it in the /configuration folder on the USB stick, should do the trick.   

 

And of course the GPU, as already reported, won't work until the kernel is updated. Can boot shell etc, but not show the GUI on host device. Also HW transcoding obviously won't work and nor will GPU stats display anything and so on. 

 

Otherwise, everything seems to be running well as far as I can tell (🤞).

It transcodes with my Jellyfin docker on stable, but need the beta version of Emby.

OpenZFS 2.2.7 released in December which added support for 6.12 Kernel, plus ZFS 2.2.7 is the version included in Unraid 7.0, so in theory ZFS should work.

But, unfortunately looks like Unraid 7.0 released with kernel 6.6.

Any word on if they are actively working on upgrading the kernel to 6.12?

I'm really not sure, to be honest this is the first time I've even paid attention to what Unraid is running that close. My old hardware was a 4th gen I7, so I had no issues with needing bleeding edge support.

What is the power consumption like with 'Arrow Lake'?  

There seems to be 245T/265T/285T 35W CPU's coming, not like they will be much cheaper. Am I right in saying by setting the PL1/PL2 in the BIOS you can get the same lower power consumption results?

Also stability for those running on the 6.12 kernel with 7.0

Hi guys, I have been following this thread since the start. I have an old Skylake based system and considering going for the core ultra series but I want to make sure it will work as it will be my one and only system.

 

Can someone forward me the new kernel files so I can give it a go on the my existing system before pulling the trigger on the Arrow Lake mobo and CPU.

Just for testing only 2 apps - Plex and qBitTorrent 

 

power draw in idle from the wall (all system idle, hdds no spindown- zfs) -90-110W

 

unfortunately i use TrueNas  Fangtooth Nightly (developer build) because of  6.12.9 kernel - i don't have the b...s to compile the Unraid kernel

I can confirm with the 6.12.9 kernel Plex works as intended with 245k - hw transcoding tested 9 4k HDR to 1080p with tone mapping - no sweat - (lazy to try more) 

 

 

very nice upgrade from my old 13500 (more for my self esteem than a real necessity  )

I'll keep the rest of my stuff on Unraid 7 - plex content can be remade (i have a backup anyway) - the other stuff not entirely 

 

Lets hope that Unraid will upgrade soon to 6.12x (please guys  )

I'm also interested if you could share your custom kernel with 6.12.9 with me? I also just got a 265k and am hoping to try testing it out before completely switching. Hopefully the 7.1 beta hits in a couple weeks that SHOULD include this kernel so that we don't need go this route for too long
