Damn I ordered one of these to use with my C2SEE hoping to be able to control the fan speed from the motherboard too....

Also, since I could no longer use the backplane to power the fans, and the C2SEE only has 5 fan ports, I had to get a PWM Y splitter.

In order to use the fan shroud in this case, I had to get a new heatsink for my processor. I couldnt use the heatsink/fan that came with the processor.

Steven, is your mobo and its requirements of having to use all 4-pin fans the primary reason for your switching out all of the fans and wires, or is that necessary in general to quiet it down?  I have the same case on its way, but don't plan on pairing it with a SuperMicro mobo... just wondering what I need to be preparing myself for...  Thanks1

I have decided to wait for a sale on Norco 4020. Even with having to buy a powersupply the cost per drive bay will be about the same for a 15 drive array and lower if I decide to put more than 15 drives in the array. I also think there is a higher probablility of being able to buy more of the same thing for about the same price in the future if I want to expand further.

 

I do agree that even at $300 this is a good deal but no longer think it is the lowest cost route for a server with hot swap drive bays. If I already owned one and needed to expand I would certainly grab one or two.

One more thing...

From what I understand, if your mobo has 4-pin fan connectors (as mine does), you must use a 4-pin fan or you cannot slow it down.  I verified that I couldnt do anything with the 3-pin fans that were in the case.  

 

As a bonus...I opened up both of my SuperMicro 5-in-3's and they had 92mm 4-wire fans, but were hooked up to a 3-pin connector.  So, I replaced those with the 3-pin fans I took out of the case.  So, now I have two extra 4-pin SuperMicro 92mm fans.

Now I am thinking again.

At $200, it was a great deal. At $300, I'm on the fence about another one...especially since some folks are reporting that it doesn't necessarily come with all the necessary cables. However, I do really like having 760 watts of redundant power if I need it.

Really the Norco case is not a better deal at all. While the prices might be close after shipping and the Norco case has a total of 20 bays to the SuperMicro's 15.

 

Norco makes the cheapest cases I have ever seen (both cost and quality). The fit and finish of the cases just don't stack up (although I must admit the 4224 that just arrived is a large improvement over the 4020 I have at the office). Their back planes have had a tendency to snap (broken 3 so far), everything in the case is stamped metal with sharp edges, and they still seem to be learning how to engineer their cases (120mm fans took how long?).

 

What they do have however is great customer service, I have yet to have an issue with Norco that doesn't get resolved in just one phone call. I can't say the same for SuperMicro, but then I've never needed to call them.

 

Quality wise they are not even in the same boat. Not to mention the SuperMicro is coming with 3 redundant power supplies, rack rails, etc...

 

The Norco is a New case and the SuperMicro is a "Used" case.

 

The "Deal" is the SuperMicro, unless you need more drive bays.

got the unraid-fan-speed.sh script working.  I was even able to dial down the top speed of the fans in the script to 200 and my temps never went over 38C during a parity check.  

 

If it's not too much trouble could you please point to the source for the unraid-fan-speed.sh you're using?

 

I've searched around* but I didn't find a definitive match.

 

Any specific comments/lessons learned would be greatly appreciated.  I'm using all the same hardware (below)

ok so I ordered the case and plan on using the suggested SUPERMICRO MBD-C2SEE-O board.  Since I will only need 15 sata ports, whats the best combination of sata cards to get there.  I plan on buying 1 of the Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 cards, but is there a different card I can use along with the 6 onboard spots that is less expensive than the Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8?  Or is the savings not worth it? 

 

Second question is does this board require any special to hook up to the fans?  I saw some folks were talking about swapping cables etc.  That sounds like a lot of work and I would like to keep things as close to stock as possible.  I am loving this case so far!

What about cables from the backplate to the SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8?  And I am guessing it is standard sata cables to the monoprice card.  I just want to make sure I order all the correct parts ahead of time, and I am sure others may be interested in the same build.

Yes those are the same cables I use with my SASLP. Check around, it should be available cheaper.

Started my build tonight. I went with the following:

 

1. Supermicro  X8SIL-F MB ( I recieved rev 1.02 from Amazon) this case was supposedly designed for this board, but I had some set up issues

  a. 8 pin connector from the power supply is to short to reach the mother board power connector. I had to order an extension cable I went with this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036ORCJY/ref=oss_product

  b. The rear fan cables are to short to reach all but one fan connector on the motherboard. I ended up ordering this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002G1YNQS/ref=oss_product

2. I3-530 CPU

3. Supermicro SNK-P0046P Processor Heatsink (passive)

4. 4GB 1333MHZ DDR3 Ecc CL9 Dimm (KVR1333D3E9SK2/4G)

 

Build quality seems excellent, but the stand offs do not match with this board perfectly. I had to put a plastic spacer in the hole around the sata ports, and the corner where the sata ports are has no mounting whole making the board slightly flimsy when plugging in the cables. Best bet is to support the board from underneath while plugging in the cables.

I was unable to start her up as I am waiting on the cables to arrive. Did a parity check while I was at work in hopes of placing the drives after the build. Well I guess I can hold off until the weekend.

Have the exact same problem with that board and the Norco 4220 case.

What did you guys use to extend the ribbon cable for the power buttons etc?  Does that ribbon fit on the motherboard directly or do we need to use that CBL-0068L cable?

I used the CBL-0068L, but I would prefer to extend that 16-pin cable or find a longer one.
