Where is the Roadmap?

Featured Replies

An unRAID OS development website has been created which includes The Roadmap.

In the future this site will also host community-contributed Plugins and a separate Developer's Forum.

Please use this thread for comments related to the Roadmap.

Edit: the road map got all crumpled up and has coffee stains, a few burns, and spiders nesting in it.  I need to create a new one...

Now thats what i am talking about.

Let me be the first to congratulate on this huge step forward

Edit: when you get a minute can you perhaps write down the procedure for getting something into the roadmap. For instance ext3. There are multiple threads on this already do we really need to have another thread suggesting it or is there a feature request / voting system coming? :)

This is a very nice development. :) Kudos to You for a great leap forward in transparency about what is to be expected, even if Roadmaps may change over time.

On the actual content, I do not see anything within the area of usability of unRAID as suggested in several threads in here over time. Maybe some is intended to be left to 3rd pard development through plugins, maybe some will be relieved by the help system? As both are anticipated for the next beta, I hope and believe this is the case.

I do believe, that small key usability improvements will make some of the initial steps quite a bit lower, and the support forums less loaded with trivial issues.  ::)

Congratulation!

This is indeed a huge step forward. This is what unRAID needs "transparency" !!!

I like it. Would like to see hot insert and possibly remove added, but understand it takes time.

Daisy chained servers is a cool feature!

Very nice to see some of the ideas in the planning stage!  Really like the spindown of hot drives (I think I requested something similar a while back), and espeically the driver rewrite (we need to order up a BIG snowstorm - not too hard in Colorado, right ;) ).

Joe L. will love this one in beta3 ("Misc"):

- add 'Restore' functionality, and get rid of 'initconfig' shell command

2011 is going to be a great year for unRAID!

Hmmm... seems to lack a search function?

Other suggestions:

Roadmap for version "Never" << does this mean never or not assigned but happening. confusing

misc < wherever possible avoid general or bundled tasks. a good road map is an extension of a todo list allowing the predictions of % complete etc to be vaguely correct

ETA < no one will ever expect an ETA to be correct but it doesnt mean there is no value in having one. As it stands version 5.1 could be due 2025 or 2011.

I realize it is early days yet so these comments may only reflect the newness of the road map project

Joe L. will love this one in beta3 ("Misc"):

Many of the popular add-ons are there only because of "misc" stuff we've explored over the years.  It seems that the roadmap for upcomming releases in 5.1 and onward will include some features that were promised long ago.  (email alerts of abnormal status, UPS support) With any luck some of the work can be leveraged and natively incorporated.

"Misc" in 5.0b3 is OK by me.

Just don't name the new button to replace the "initconfig" command "restore"   Name it "Initialize Disk Configuration" and give the affiliated text a good verbal description of what it will do.  Put it in an "Advanced" screen.  That way users of unRAID are far less likely to press it when a disk is disabled thinking it will restore their data.   I never asked the old button be removed, just labeled better.

2011 is going to be a great year for unRAID!

It is starting out that way. ;D

Wow Tom, you've been busy.  THIS is what I expected was going on all along, that you do indeed have a management system in place and are actively developing with it.  The problem up to this point has been transparency.  Until now, none (or maybe a few) of us new anything about what was planned, what has made the cut for a future release, and what the progress is.  Simply exposing this high level look at the scope of planned releases will do wonders to boost confidence and encourage deeper discussions about planned functionality.  It definitely will stop a lot of the sniping that has occurred over the past year in the forums.

It also gives us a better insight into your sense of humor.  For example your ending comment about "Driver Rewrite" and improving write speed by 50% - "This is one of those projects to be done while snowed in for a week with no internet access."  I love that.  :P

How do you want (or do you want) us to submit ideas / suggestions on the tasks you have identified, such as the help system options you have outlined?

"Never" means that it's a feature request that has come up from time-to-time but I don't see it ever being implemented for unRAID - I could be talked out of it, but has to be real compelling.

Bundled tasks - agreed, it was late & the ball was about to drop & I just wanted to get it done  ;)

ETA - well, you know ETA for a software project is notoriously difficult.  But this is generally how I approach unraid development.  First, I am a user of the system.  I have my own home theater set up, and is the reason why the project started in the first place.  So if there is a feature I need for my own use, it's gets done pretty quick  ;)  On the other  hand, if I'm not going to use the feature at all it tends to kinda just sit there  >:(  If the feature requires additional hardware (like >2TB drive support), then it might get delayed until I figure out the best h/w to purchase.  8)  If an existing customer requests a feature it tends to get bumped up the list.  :)  If someone is predicating their purchase on a certain feature it might jump several places on the list  ;D

Comments and suggestions are always welcome, right in this board for now.  The development site has a commenting system, but I plan to open that up to plugin developers only - I don't want yet another site open to spammers  >:(

Please feel free to post a "Usability" topic here.

I completely understand the anti-spammer sentiment.  Might I suggest you (or your new mods) create sub-threads under the appropriate development threads for the planned items that you have identified as necessary in future updates, say one version ahead of the current beta?  If you do that, it will be easier to traverse and filter, and it will give the non-developer group (the rest of the unRAID community) a voice, regardless of how much you actually heed the suggestions.

Limetech, the new roadmap page looks nice and gives us a nice peephole into how things are going.

Is there a way for cross-referencing features? It might be nice to link the never Multiple Arrays to the future Implement P+Q redundancy or Diagonal Parity scheme.

I do have a question related to one of the never features. Are you up to discussing the general idea about this feature? I'm interested in what or how you think the speeds could be improved. Driver Rewrite

The search function is in the "tasklist"

That only searches summaries...

It might be nice to link the never Multiple Arrays to the future Implement P+Q redundancy or Diagonal Parity scheme.

I thought this as well, but didn't want to push.  Or maybe you could just notate in the "Multiple Arrays" the alternatives so it doesn't look like a completely dead topic, just a dead-end development option that has other solutions.

the new forum and roadmap are a good idea the Implement P+Q redundancy what are the ETA of it are we talking 2012 or 2011 I know it hard to tell a ETA but whit a years to take from  ;)

the Support daisy-chained servers look also nice to have

This has been missing, great idea!

I miss in the list support for larger arrays and SAS cards?

Also a hot standby drive to be used as drive replacement immediately after a drive failure?

Also the RAM based disk that would be useful for YAMJ is missing:

I'm just guessing here, but it's likely Tom hasn't put every wishlist item into the roadmap.

Aiden, hopefully :-)

There is a discussion happening now on the best way to deal with this. Have faith and hang fire for information :)

It's pretty amazing to be one of the first adopters on unRAID to finally see a Raodmap. IIRC there use to be a form post here or there back when it was all done on AVSForum...

Look at the progress on the Roadmap!!!
