  1. 64GB DDR4 Unbuffered ECC 3200mhz ram (Kingston 32GB KSM32ED8/32HC x2). I wanted ECC ram that would work with non-server parts (Ryzen AM4). I purchased them at exactly the right time, because with the ram blow outs they're over double the price per stick than what I paid for them, currently.
  2. Hearing all the woes some people have had with USB drives, makes me think I've been pretty lucky. My original USB (Verbatim Store N Go 16GB) is still going strong (touches wood).
  3. Many of us don't even use arrays to begin with anymore. Just ZFS pools. I had no issues with it. Though, these days I just make UnRaid a Docker Swarm worker and then deploy Swarm services to UnRaid from the manager VM. Works fine. But native compose integration makes sense.
  4. Wowie. Never thought I'd see the day we can rid ourselves of the ol' USB boot drive.
  5. Hey guys, Thank you for the ZFS expand addition. Just tried it out for the first time today and it is absolutely painless. Just open a slot in the pool, add the drive, and start the pool back up and that's it. Lovely. Gave it a go on a small pool first (3TB drives), but am confident everything will work great with my larger pools.
  6. But they work fine in them, regardless, in my experiences. Have two shucked Barracuda Pros (10TB) in one of my ZFS pools right now that have run for half a decade+ without skipping a beat. Yeah, the majority of my drives are Exos / WD Red Plus/Pro and such. But if the price is right and the Barracuda Pro is CMR, go for it.
  7. Have also ditched XFS for a full ZFS-pool setup. Is there any real downside to just making the unraid cache disk a virtual disk using space from the SSD hosting your Proxmox VMs? I could pass the whole SSD through, but if I could just give UnRaid some of the space and make the rest available for other VMs, that would be better.
  8. Anyone know if it's possible to see the Adaptec cards temperature from within UnRaid? Running UnRaid as a VM on Proxmox and have passed through the entire 71605 controller. Everythings working perfectly, but have no idea what the cards temperature is (not too worried, but just curious). Edit: I mean the temperature of the actual controller, not the HDDs that are attached to it (their temps show just fine).
  9. I don't know about guy guys (and gals), but I'm a sucker for ordering used SFP+ NICs for my servers. Being an Aussie, most affordable used NICs are either really old or modified in such ways that you're not even sure if the product is genuine or not (typically from aliexpress). This is particularly true for the beloved Mellanox Connect X-3s that have served me well over the years, where they will work, but you simply don't even bother looking into updating the firmware - not that there have been any firmware updates since ancient times. Lately, I've seen a few Intel X710-DA4 FHs pop up on ebay for reasonable prices ($110-120AUD), and I took a chance. I was happy with the Connect X-3s 10G (my Mikrotik Switches are 10G), but was in the market for a 4 port card. The card arrived with a manufacture date of 2019, and all the right Intel stickers and markings. I plugged it into a Windows 11 machine and the card was detected right away and the firmware updated without a hitch. Have tested it with UnRaid and Proxmox and everything is working as expected. Card doesn't run too hot and I haven't had to add a fan or anything like that. So yeah, it has been a refreshing and enjoyable experience with this card so far. Have just ordered a second one for another machine.
  10. I've just moved to virtualise UnRaid under Proxmox. So I've just got rid of all docker containers / VM within UnRaid, so will have to fix those shares. Pretty much going forward - UnRaid is going to be used strictly as a NAS, with other VMs and machines accessing my UnRaid Media share via NFS (mainly NFS docker volumes). I see. I'm only really making this topic because I've had those disks in the same hot swap enclosure for years. Granted, it was in a Lian Li PC-P80B case with 5x14CM fans blasting away (3 right in front of the enclosures) - but I thought I would have noticed such a sound before, since my head was directly next to the Lian Li during that time. I think you're right in that it is probably harmless. Annoying, but harmless. I've moved everything into rackmounts, and will soon be sitting further away from my server. Just to add: My Seagate drives were racking up the usual extra load cycles that they're known for (especially the Exos), so I ran through the Seatools to disable the EPC, etc, as detailed here (and that pretty much halted the load cycles in their tracks): Haven't really messed with any other setting. Yeah, this is my first time using an Adaptec Raid (in HBA mode) card. So I also wasn't sure if it is something to do with this - since I've always used an LSI 9201-16e. Apart from going into the Adaptec menu to change to HBA mode, I've left everything else standard.
  11. Hello, Recently moved my build into a rackmount case, swapped out my LSI 9201 HBA for an Adaptec 71605 (with brand new store bought Silverstone cables), and hooked everything up. Everything has been going well, but I have noticed that when I'm sitting idle in UnRaid (as in, not doing a parity check or transferring files) one or two of my disks are being pinged every second. It's like I'm sitting in a room with an old clock. At first, I thought maybe something was wrong with the drive - so I did extended SMART tests on all of my drives (within UnRaid), and also loaded up Seagate's SeaTools to run more long tests on my Seagate drives, with every drive passing with flying colours. I then noticed that the noise synced with the HDD activity LED on my disk enclosure (SilverStone FS305-12G), holding my array drives (2xBarracuda Pro 10TB, 2x Exos 10TB, and 1 WD Red Plus 12TB (Parity)). The disks in my second FS305-12G, holding a RAIDZ1 ZFS pool (All 3TB WD Red CMR drives), never get pinged with this activity, so it has something to do with activity hitting the array. I've tried to capture a video of it, not the easiest to hear since there are a bunch of case fans blasting away. Activity is currently focused on my Barracuda Drives (Disk 3 and 5 in array). Any idea what could be causing this? Thanks (Edit: I've included one of the SeaTools Test Result screenshots, but all of my Seagate drives had the same results, and the lone WD Red Plus 12TB in the array passed an extended Smart test within UnRaid) tower-diagnostics-20250421-2355.zip
  12. Got around to setting this up - worked pefect on UnRaid 7.0.1 (after changing to SeaBios). Ended up with 4 cores / 8GB ram will change if required. Removed cache drive as well, since all UnRaid will be doing is storing data - will remove all docker containers and VMs from UnRaid itself. Thanks again for the guide.
  13. Sounds good + I offloaded Plex and its friends (tautulli, etc) to a N100 Mini-PC (Beelink BQ-12) a while back, so that my AMD processor isn't having to worry about media transcoding. Cheers
  14. Bit of a necro here - but I was a bit hesitant on this card because of all the talk of heat issues and such, especially coming from an LSI 9201-16e which ran cool with no fan. I must say, I am really liking this card. It's slim, well-built, and it seems many more legit cards are available compared to LSI in this price segment (Adaptec are less-prone to counterfeits compared to LSI, in general). I crudely strapped a Noctua fan on this using a cable tie (Noctua 40mm fan with included low-noise adapter are not audible over the other case fans despite its small size). To get the card working with UnRaid, it was as simple as pressing ctrl+A for the boot menu and changing the mode to HBA. Recommended.
  15. Can you better define 'lost' - are they failing SMART tests? Are they powering up but not showing up in UnRaid? Are the disks simply not powering up at all? Is/was your array a single parity XFS array? or are you dabbling with ZFS? I'm assuming when you've moved into the new case that you're checking both ends of the SATA power connection - disk/enclosure and PSU. I only say this, because I've also just moved my gear into a new case (see signature) and sometimes you think you've plugged something into the PSU and it just ain't so.
