  1. Yeah I see them for sale here in the UK for £230 which is over double the price of other 2TB drives, since the only benefit for me would be faster parity checks I don't think I'll bother.

  3. I can't find the article now but we had this on some Redhat servers at work.... anything below 10ms would report 0.000ms maybe this is something similar. Seem to remember it being something to do with 64bit registers as it only happened on their x64 boxes. Also here is the effect of having to arp.   4. First ping the machine will have to arp for the mac address too so this can be misleading.

  8. No, its my parity drive since I first setup unRAID so these are definitely new.
  9. and you can test individual drive performance with hdparm :- root@Monkey:/boot/smarthistory# hdparm -t /dev/sdf /dev/sdf: Timing buffered disk reads: 250 MB in 3.01 seconds = 83.13 MB/sec root@Monkey:/boot/smarthistory# That might help you identify where your bottle necks are.
  10. Pretty sure wholly is right, Standard 32bit PCI bus is shared. Also remember that when you do a parity check it has to read every single byte of every disk... with lots of disks that takes a long time whatever hardware you are using. Mine takes 15 hours, 4 drives on a PCI card and 6 on the motherboard. ( 25mb/s )
  11. Well I ran another Parity check and another reallocated sector appeared. 3 Parity checks 3 new reallocated sectors. Think I'll buy a new drive and then thrash this one with the pre-clear script until they stop appearing.
  12. Raid 0 might improve performance using cheap hardware..... of course if its painful to rebuild your setup it might be more hassle than its worth.

  14. 1st drive I've ever owned thats developed reallocated sectors without me doing something stupid to it. The drives from my old windows 2000 file server have 40000+ hours on them with no errors (well apart from one I dropped ).
  15. ahhh now I see, the tunables on the settings page... those have nothing to do with system memory afaik.
  16. I guess he means the default settings of unRAID are optimised for 512mb of RAM. Can he change them to something more suitable for 4gb of RAM. If thats the question then I think the answer is.... you don't need to change them, it does it automatically. Someone correct me if I'm wrong
  17. Just a shame its my parity disk really. Means I have to swap it to get peace of mind regardless of whether I RMA it. I've got a few other of the same model with similar runtimes, none of those have any reallocated sectors.

  19. I have a Samsung HD154UI which has had 2 reallocated sectors appear over the last month... anyone know if I'll be able to RMA it? Its still under warranty but I guess they could argue that its normal.
  20. Someone needs to buy one and find out Some people are suggesting the 1TB ones format to 931mb which is the same as a standard 1TB drive afaik. Since the western digital website seems to make no mention of increased capacity for these drives one would assume we have to wait for a firmware which removes the 512b emulation mode before the additional storage is realised.

Apply for some jobs... get certified.. many claim that they are useless (technical people) but the fact of the matter is most management in IT fields are just as useless so they see certification as a good thing usually. Real world experience is what you need so if getting certified can help you get a foot in the door then why not do it. Definitely include anything that might be deemed useful to potential employers in your CV. Foot in the door jobs tend to be Helpdesk or Desktop support.... I started in Desktop support and now do Cisco routing, switching, SAN, Content Delivery, Firewalls, IDS, VOIP... in fact pretty much everything Cisco. I don't have any certifications or any academic qualifications. I guess as with any career you can't expect to walk into your ideal job straight off the bat, you'll need to slog it out doing the 3 finger salute like the rest of us did, if you are smart, join the right company and speak to the right people (most important maybe!) you'll soon find your way into a job you enjoy. Oh and with regards to doing the certifications you mentioned they are probably all possible to do using self study guides based on your past experience..
  22. I'd also suggest good quality locking cables. cheap ones can cause a lot of headaches.
