  1. My card arrived today... My Ubuntu box recognised it without making any changes ( running 2.6.31-19-generic ) Performance looks ok, 10k 146g SAS drives are reading at about 90mb/s.
  2. I've got one of these cards coming (out of stock) so I'll probably try and get it running in a test box with unraid. Also have some SAS drives to play with too. Not sure how fast it will be anyway, read some bad things about the current linux drivers. Actually I read some bad things about the windows drivers too so it might potentially end up on fleabay.
  3. Cabling tying different SATA cables together can cause problems with crosstalk too apparently.
  4. Same with my samsungs... they always start below room temp.
  5. I wasn't any less careful back when my main storage was FreeNAS. Daily smart checking, weekly md5 checks. I'm sure the forums skew perception of the product anyway, I'm guessing the majority of users just set it up and forget about it. The only reason for them to come here is if they have a problem.
  6. what version of unraid? Safari used to crash on me too with authentication enabled but it doesn't seem to now. I'm running 4.5.1.
  7. Not sure about that UPS but plenty of people using APC UPS's :- http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1528.0 just use a script to shut down the server when the power is out.
  8. yes. icy dock 5-in-3 and 4-in-3 both have molex which obstruct right angle cables.
  9. limetech mentioned an upcoming v5 in one of the Beta threads... no dates or solid info however.
  10. Since it caused my unraid server to lock up every time I used it "working fine" is relative in this case. All my testing proved is that it worked fine with the 3 drives I had available in a different system.
  11. I'm going to get either the chenbro or a Hi-Fi style case I think, still undecided as to whether he wants just a NAS or a media player with storage.....
  12. Good find.... now to see how much for shipping to the UK. Can't find anywhere that has it in the UK. EDIT : $243 shipped to the UK.
  13. Looks like its just a disk enclosure to me... need a suitable PSU and maybe some modding to put a motherboard in it. Heres a UK supplier selling the same box :- http://www.span.com/product_info.php?cPath=19_1001_1051&products_id=4778
  14. Not true. This is a particularly good deal at the moment (there are a few left): http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/600745/2tb-hdd-for-less-than-100-inc-vat-d 2TB for £84.99 ex. VAT. Yup Aria have the same price too, free shipping if you sign up to their forums http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/2+Terabyte+%282TB%29+Hitachi+7K2000%2C+32MB+SATA+?productId=38391
  15. I also recently searched long and hard for a cube style case with 3 external 5.25 bays and came up with nothing apart from the tranquil PC box. I think I will probably end up buying something Hi-Fi style but I wanted my friend to be able to add a drive without too much hassle.
  16. I tested this again by the way, a 1.5tb Samsumg, 2tb Hitachi and a 500gb Seagate. It ran through a full parity check fine and I tried the disks in various positions on the controller (just accessing data on disks) and didn't manage to get it to hang once. All the same I think I'm going to ditch it, get a 4 port PCI-E card and then upgrade the smaller disks in my system with 2tb ones, that would give me enough room for the next year at least. Hopefully something better will come along by then.
  17. hmm going by my power costs it would take 10 years for a 1tb drive to use its own price in electricity based on 7w 24x7x365 but the point is still valid once you compare 20 1tb drives to 10 2tb drives.
  18. Seems others are using this card with these drives without issues :- http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1476667
  19. Think I have a spare Samsumg somewhere, maybe if I get time this evening I'll try doing a preclear using the SuperMicro card.
  20. hmm funnily enough I had Samsung 1.5gb (HD154UI) drives attached when I had issues with it, I've tested the card in another machine and it seems fine, not got back around to putting it back in my main box yet.
  21. smoothwall? Pretty sure you could get an old Cisco box to do the job from ebay, just need a box with a WIC-1AM and whatever other interfaces you need. You wont like configuring a Cisco if you never used one however
  22. pretty sure the WD marketing team would be the first people to tell us if they could fit more data.... they are operating in 512B emulation mode so I'm guessing they don't look much different to any other drive.
  23. load up the slots with CUDA cards and you've got your very own supercomputer... shame the slots aren't double width apart really most of the fastest cards seem to be double width. Added bonus you'll no longer need heating in the winter...
  24. Having unraid connected to two different networks with two different cards wont cause any issues. (assuming of course that both networks are different subnets).
  25. Pretty good price. My Only concern would be cooling but otherwise it looks very tidy.
