  1. I have the File Integrity Plugin setup and working. Thank you for all the work that you've put into this. I have a very simple setup with 8 data drives, 1 parity and a cache drive. As part of getting to know what the tool does I have set up to check one of the data drives each night. And it does what I expect for the most part. No errors are reported. But I am puzzled by the fact that the checking process appears to cause writes to the disk being checked (and an equivalent number of writes to the parity drive). I would have thought that the checking function would be read-only as far as the data drives are concerned, reading the data each file, calculating the hash, and verifying against the previously stored version in the extended attributes. Is this behaviour of writes to the data disk expected? Thanks.

  3. That's perfectly plausible. When the software was originally forked from Firefly (as it was then known, with much of the development up to then focussed on serving content to Roku's SoundBridge products) one of the less reliable aspects was the web UI. Although I found it pretty usable, those doing the fork stated at the time that they had issues with the way much of the program was coded, citing memory leaks amongst other issues. My recollection is that much of the web UI was stripped out when the fork was created. I assume there's now been some effort into putting something back in place. Looking at some old source code from around 2007-ish, I can see that the password that I gave was correct for the version prior to the fork. Sorry for the misdirection.
  4. If I remember rightly the password used to be mt-daapd and the username was left blank, but my memory's a bit rusty and I don't use this software any more...
  5. Has anyone managed to have this server streaming successfully to a Roku SoundBridge? The original Firefly server did this very well - I used to run it bare-metal under unRAID 5 - but I an not having much luck with this Docker based implementation. I have set up the path to the share containing my music, which is found and scanned successfully. Whenever I try to connect to the server with the SoundBridge I get the error "Failed to set ownership on logfile: Operation not permitted". The server then restarts and rescans, as per this clip from the log. [ LOG] scan: Scanned 16600 files... [ LOG] scan: Scanned 16800 files... [ LOG] scan: Scanned 17000 files... Since forked-daapd creates the log file, I am not sure why it is complaining about not being able to change the ownership (and why should it do that anyway?). Not sure where I go from here... (and I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to docker).
  6. Check the cables first. For a basic server 430W is normally fine with more drives than you have provided it can handle the peak startup currents for all drives at once. I have had a few glitches over the years - it has always been power cables or SATA cables that were responsible.
  7. Almost all Atom CPUs are 64 bit capable, even the much older ones (but not the very early single core N270). From what I can find the D2701 looks like a very close relation of the D2700 and would be very well suited. (http://ark.intel.com/products/59683) This is an interesting way to re-use a nice piece of hardware.

Depends upon your level of paranoia Sent from my SM-T560NU using Tapatalk One possibility is that if you have some rogue software somewhere on your network, not only might it modify / encrypt your files, but it could also be sending information "back home". My view would be that I would want the server to have share access blocked until I had a chance to get control of things.

    It should shut down the UPS completely. The way it is supposed to work is that before UNRAID shuts down, the APCUPSD software issues a kill-power command to the UPS which also has a time setting (maybe 60 seconds). This allows for UNRAID to complete its shutdown before power is removed completely by the UPS shutting down to prevent excessive discharge of its batteries. The other thing for anyone to remember is to adjust the APCUPSD setting so that the shutdown process begins with enough battery power left for it to run to completion. It's also normal to set the PC's BIOS to allow an automatic start up when mains power is restored. I don't think the ups shutdown works on the cyber power ones. It certainly doesn't work on mine and others reported the same. All other features work, though. My mistake. Thanks.

  11. I quite like those $40 cages. Yes - you would need to add cooling, but on the plus side, you get to choose the fans. Some cages come with fans that are either too small, or too noisy, or both. By being able to choose you get to optimise the fan according to your needs and budget. In addition, the fans look like they're relatively easy to fit and replace later if needed. On the down side, you are responsible for all of the cabling to the drives, although I note that the seller that you linked to also sells some nice-looking power cables that span across five drives which would probably help.
  12. The point is that I, and probably others, would worry about it. Yes, there's a two year warranty, but the fact is that they specify a two year warranty constrained by a ridiculously low power on hours figure, bearing in mind that they also promote (in the first document quoted) the drives as suitable for home servers and NAS devices, which are typically powered 24/7. It simply does not make sense. I would generally prefer to buy drives and other parts where I know for sure what I am getting.

According to this document... http://www.seagate.com/files/docs/pdf/en-GB/whitepaper/7200-drive-spec-comparison-gb.pdf it means 2400 hours when used for 8 hours a day, five days a week and also "on as needed". So, 60 weeks in total, apparently whether it is spinning or not (I would love to see a meaningful definition of "as needed"). Are there any Seagate lurkers here that can enlighten us?

I'm in the process of migrating my server to a Sharkoon T9.... http://www.sharkoon.com/?q=en/content/t9-economy It's not especially high quality, but good enough for my needs with 9 full width slots available. You may have to bend the tabs to accommodate drive cages (for some cages you don't need to), but the metal is pretty thin so should be easy. In fact I am planning on just breaking off the unwanted tabs by rocking them back and forth a few times with a pair of pliers. Four tabs took me about five minutes, so it'll be under half an hour to break off 24, leaving only those needed to support three cages. Edit: Just bought a second one to re-house my back up server. Office will look much tidier soon.

  16. SOrry. I am the yank mod on a large UK server and forums where the atmosphere is a bit lighter. No offense was meant I apologize if it offended you. No worries - I figured that this was most likely just a cultural diversity thing. You did not offend me personally - I am used to inter-nationality linguistic glitches. That would also cause me a problem. Even worse when it comes from someone in HR. Back on topic - should I splash out on one of these new MicroServers? I don't *need* one, but they look so neat. I am sure I could hack one up to at least seven drives and maybe eight at a pinch...

Anyway, it is comparatively rare that we get rebates in the UK compared to, say, the US where they seem to be a very frequent occurrence with some retailers. I refer to the many posts on this forum that highlight such offers.
  18. Sorry.... You seem to be under the impression that this is a Windows support forum. It isn't. unRAID is (normally) a stand-alone file server based on Slackware (Linux).
  19. Add Aria too. They are more often that not cheaper than Scan. Check the super specials for the best prices, sometimes with free delivery. And Ebuyer too. Been using them for years - along with Scan. Good service and no complaints.
