cinereus
Whenever I browse my ebooks share with Windows Explorer over SMB it loads incredibly slowly to start with and about 70% of the time hangs the whole explorer.exe process for minutes until it becomes unresponsive. This happens whether I'm browsing the share root which has zero files and just six folders in. It also happens in my ebook folder which has fewer than 300 items in and a total size of just ~6 GB. Weirdly, if it doesn't hang and crash, it then works fast and perfectly. All my other shares mounted in the same way over the same connection from the same unraid server using explorer work completely normally. What could be making this happen? Quote Link to comment
cinereus
Any ideas? This one share is completely unusable most of the time. Quote Link to comment
itimpi
Have you got any unusual characters in any of the folder/file names? In my experience using characters like colon, asterisk and question mark for instance can cause problems as they are reserved characters at the SMB level. Quote Link to comment

I had a directory with a "¬" character in it. I have renamed it and things are much smoother now! Thanks. If this fixes it I'll be so happy as I've been dealing with this for two years now! cinereus
Annoyingly this has started happening again even without the ¬ directory Quote Link to comment

tjb_altf4
Try turning off the 2 "privacy" settings in windows explorer folder options. This worked for me when having similar issues years ago 1 Quote Link to comment
Frank1940
Also try this. Go to the share in Windows Explorer. Right click on it. Then select Properties from the dropdown list. Then look for the Customize tab. Set it up as follows: What this does is stops Explorer from trying to populate 'things' like thumbnails of photos, etc. 1 Quote Link to comment

cinereus
Afraid I'm still getting the same issue. Sometimes even moving the mouse over folders is enough to crash it. Quote Link to comment

Frank1940
Thought perhaps it was a lack of RAM (=<8GB). This does not look like your problem. I googled the following windows explorer crashes when accessing network drive and got quite a few hits. (You may have already gone down this path...) Are you using a mapped drive or going in through the Network 'folder' in the left pane of Windows Explorer? Edited July 10, 2022 by Frank1940 Quote Link to comment

cinereus
Unfortunately I'm still getting this issue Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
This is usually a Windows problem, can you try with a different PC, if you don't have another one see if a friend or family member can lend you a laptop for testing. Quote Link to comment
cinereus
On further testing this is also now crashing Krusader every single time. Both Krusader and Explorer crash when trying to navigate to this share and this share only. Quote Link to comment

JorgeB
There's nothing abnormal in the log, and kruzader crashed? You can post the container log to see if there's something there. Quote Link to comment
