I have the same issues:

I even have more issues at the moment. I cannot connect to ANY Chromecast device from Roon. I see my phone, PC, and Node2i, but Chromecast devices don't show up in Roon.

  • Can you nuke the Docker, delete appdata, and start over? you enter credentials via a Roon client after connecting to Roon core. If I recall. It will have to rebuild your server.

The idea behind Docker is that the software has everything it needs to run all inside its own walled garden. You specify a few little holes it has to see through in the docker config page on the unrai

Roon on laptop and Roon Server on my NAS have been great since install up until this week when we had fibre internet installed which meant new Genexis e600 router. Now Roon on laptop or phone will not connect to Roon Server.

Server and laptop are connected to router via ethernet, unmanaged switches and powerline adapters. Can connect to internet fine, JellyFin has not been impacted by change just Roon. W11 Laptop can see NAS on Local Network fine.

Attached here log from Roon on laptop and Roon Server screengrab. Anything else I can attach to help?

Hello! Can I please ask, what can be the problem behind?

I have Roon installed in the docker @ Unraid, steefdebruijn/docker-roonserver (latest version).
Client is Win11 machine, playing to Topping DX1 and sometimes the playback stops, saying that "Roon has lost the control of the audiodevice". If I'm playing through antoher output, Arturia Minifuse 4, from the same Roon Core, I've never faced (at least I don't remember) such an issue. Sometimes it's quite stable, and can play for an hours without a stop. And sometimes it stops just every minute or so.

A part of the log is here:

What can be a reason for my issue?

This appears to be an ongoing issue, it's been going on for a couple of months now. It'l interrupt the music session, roon client will say "looking for roon server" and then after a couple of seconds, sometimes up to a minute, itl refind the server, because the docker has restarted on its own. I then have to press play again to resume my listening sessions. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason behind it, it happens randomly throughout the day, high/low disk usage, high/low internet usage, nothing seems to affect when it happens.image.thumb.png.c69e402343061934ca7df0c82423bb6f.png

This may be an issue with Roon: https://community.roonlabs.com/t/investigation-ticket-in-sudden-device-disconnection-and-music-interruption/272107/33

I personally have zero issues with the docker or Roon and have these errors in my log as well. Playback is never an issue for me.

I really appreciate the existence of this docker on Unraid. Roon server has run well for me on my Asustor NAS, on a dedicated machine before this, and now on my Unraid server, which helps me preserve power, shutting down the machine I dedicated to Roon server.

I'm behind CG-NAT, but with Tailscale both Roon and Jellyfin work perfectly from outside my LAN.

Thank you very much! I really hope this container will continue to exist.

Roonserver is not recognized between restarts. I have to de-authorize my old server, configure Tidal, outputs and so on - every time Roonserver has been restarted.

Looking at the template it sets up folders in /mnt/cache/appdata - something that the plugin "Fix common errors" complains about.

Changing the template to make Roonserver use /mnt/user/appdata has solved the problem. The clients connect seamlessly to the server the way it's supposed to be - also after a server reboot or docker restart.

I don't know why the docker is set up that way, but it was problematic for me. I even tried removing the docker via Unraid and deleting the folders manually. That doesn't help when the problem is recreated every time the docker is installed.

I'm running Roon Server in a using this docker container on an Unraid Server.

For about the last week Roon has been telling me there is a Roon server update, but an option to update the container to the new server version has not appeared.

Should I attempt to upgrade the server via Roon remote as I used to before I started to use docker or should I wait for the devs to update the docker container to the new version of Roon server?

Thanks,

Peter

I'd love to get some support on this Docker

Same issue as others, Server starts and is detected by the client. When I press connect it spins for EVER and does not connect. I thought I had it fixed by logging out of my Roon account and restarting the Server, this helped a bit. Log capture is below. Not date code so I cannot tell if its writing at the top or bottom

Now, it just spins and nothing, This is my final attempt to get this working then...a different platform. This was one of my key motivations to rebuild my server 😞

image.thumb.png.acdb35a3b00283ecc541c652fecbf8dc.png

Hey @foraye don’t give up to easily! Especially if you built a full server for this. I plugged your screen shot into ChatGPT:

Thanks — I can see the log clearly.

From the screenshot, it looks like your RoonServer Docker container is caught in a repeated cycle of:

Initializing

Started

Not responding

Error

Some things worth noting:

• There’s a ps: command not found error in /app/RoonServer/Server/RoonServer line 56. This could be important — it may indicate the container environment is missing basic utilities (like procps or ps), which the app might expect.

• The repeated logs like GetLockFile, Nope, we are the only one running, etc., suggest the container is trying to start but crashing or hanging before fully coming up.

Suggestions to try:

1. Recreate the container (without deleting the app data):

• Stop the container.

• Remove it (but do not delete the RoonServer appdata directory).

• Re-pull or reinstall the container from Community Applications or Docker templates.

• Check that your volume mappings (especially /app and /tmp) are correct.

2. Check your RoonServer appdata directory (likely /mnt/user/appdata/RoonServer/):

• Sometimes corrupted settings or cache files can cause startup crashes.

• You could try moving that directory temporarily and letting it create a fresh one:

mv /mnt/user/appdata/RoonServer /mnt/user/appdata/RoonServer_backup

Then restart the container to see if it behaves better.

3. Inspect resource usage:

• Is your system low on RAM or CPU?

• Run htop or check the Unraid dashboard to make sure the system isn’t choking when RoonServer tries to start.

4. Make sure nothing else is binding to the same ports that RoonServer uses. It may look like it’s “running,” but failing to bind might cause it to crash silently.

5. Try running ps inside another container:

If ps is missing in this container’s base image, you might try running a quick container like alpine or debian and checking if ps is available. It may help confirm if the base image is stripped too lean.

Want me to help you write a quick shell command to backup your appdata and try a fresh start? Or want to dig into the Roon forums to see if others hit this exact bug recently?

I am not a software programmer or expert in these things. But I can try to help. Does your docker settings screen look similar to the settings on page one? Did you do any searches on the Roon forums? Have you tried nuking it and starting over?

I ended up forking Steef's contianer and updating it myself. Pretty easy to do.

Edit: It seems like folks are using Photon a bit more with this and seeing less memory growth over time. I'm experimenting with this in my own system.

Edit 1: I'm finding the Photon container I linked above excellent. I actually created my own repo for this (private right now since I'm not a developer just an IT guy) but used some github actions to automate a monthly rebuild of the container to keep things up to date. @xthursdayx if you're more knowledgeable about docker I'd be willing to collaborate on getting this container up to date. The davidsinko container I forked is a drop in replacement for Steef's. All of the bind mounts are the same, just change where it pulls from.

Edited by mackid1993

If anyone wants to try my container feel free to switch the template to mackid1993/docker-roonserver:latest.

It's based off: https://github.com/davindisko/docker-roonserver but uses github actions to push new releases on the 1st of the month so Photon OS and all dependencies that are installed stay up to date. You'll find lower memory usage over time than with the debian container. If the maintainer of this repo would like to work with me on updating this template I'd really be interested. @xthursdayx @rutherford

hey @mackid1993 thanks for the fork and the updated stuff! I see a couple of modifications you mention in your post: photon os, and better memory usage: that's great.

I thought containers would continue to deliver the latest version of software, and only needed to be maintained if there was a problem.

If the suggestions you've got are good, send them over to Steef guy, and see if he will mix it right in. That change would certainly hit everyone right away. Or maybe there's a reason it hasn't been done already.

I'm a know-nothing when it comes to this stuff, so forgive my ignorance! I appreciate you guys who can make dockers!

So I was in contact with someone on the Roon forums. It seems that Steef either no longer uses Roon or chooses to no longer maintain his container with the latest security patches. While Roon gets updated the base OS as well as things like ffmpeg don't. Hence the need for a fork that will be actively maintained.

This is my github repo if we can get someone with the power to update the CA template involved: https://github.com/mackid1993/docker-roonserver

If the current docker isn't being maintained any more, I'd be interested in trying yours @mackid1993, but want to be able to use it from within Apps, rather than modifying the docker parameters to point to your repository.  Not sure how that gets done, but I'll be following.

Thanks for taking an interest in keeping this docker up to date.  I'm new to Roon within the last year, but went all in with a lifetime membership.  Being able to run roonserver on my unraid box is really slick!

Wanted to say that I couldn't resist - I've updated to mackid1993/docker-roonserver:latest, and restarted my docker.  Working fine, so far... :-)

Let me know how it goes, I'm hoping May 1st we see an update pending. The idea is this will keep the base OS and all dependences Roon requires on linux at their latest versions without me or anyone having to do anything since I have a github action rebuilding the docker. The big problem is I am a docker newb and just an IT guy, I did this with trial and error and chatgpt. I really need the help of someone in the Unraid community to make sure this is all done correctly so we can get the template updated since Steef seems to not be updating his container any longer. Ideally we can have a fork of this container maintained by the community here as I've talked to Steef in the past and he isn't an Unraid user, so if anything specific to Unraid pops up, he isn't able to help us.

Totally understand.  I'm an IT guy too - but no experience with dockers other than installing and configuring.  Usually with the help of SpaceInvaderOne videos...

Curious - the logging for roonserver is pretty sparse - not even any date/timestamps.  How will we know if/when the update happens?

ChatGPT can be helpful, but for me it typically gets me in over my head, and then switches models because I've used up my 'free' allotment.  The models get dumber by the hour, and before I know it I've f*cked up my networking or something... xD

The container will update in Unraid, like a new version of the container will be built by Github actions and then pushed over to dockerhub with a new tag and latest being updated, so in the Unraid UI you'll see an update to roonserver on the 1st of the month when it's set to push. This container uses Photon OS which is a very slimmed down linux distro maintained by VMWare. The dockerfile installs  bzip2 cifs-utils alsa-utils wget icu xz from the package manager and then pulls down ffmpeg and moves it into PATH. So when the container rebuilds we will get the latest versions of these packages as well as the base OS. I was having some weird transcoding issues with Roon ARC and part of my thinking was Steef's container was really out of date.

This guy made the container I'm using: https://github.com/davindisko/docker-roonserver

I just made a new repo and added the github actions to force a rebuild so it doesn't go out of date. His container is based off of Steef's so it's a drop-in replacement on Unraid. His Dockerfile is also very easy to understand so any issues that arise should be very easy to fix. It should be very set and forget.

@mackid1993 I’m new to Roon and running into a frustrating issue. No matter which Docker image I use (currently using yours), the Roon Windows client crashes every time I try to add an artist to a playlist.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a TIDAL playlist or a Roon one, the crash happens consistently.

Just wondering: is this something you’ve experienced too, or could it be something specific to my setup?

I have no idea. That sounds like a Roon issue. Roon doesn't support docker so they may or may not choose to help you.

@KingHawk I can reproduce that crash. It looks like a Roon bug. I don't really use playlists but perhaps try setting up a temporary server on a PC or Mac and see if you can reproduce the issue. If you can then let Roon know.
