I can confirm that the USB-reader provided with the Samsung Pro Plus series works with unraid 6.9.2.

Like this one.

I used it with an Sandisk Max Endurance micro-sd 32gb.

I manually installed it with the windows USB tool on the Unraid website.

The USB-reader got accepted when i asked for a trial version within 6.9.2.

I test the FCR-HS4, and impossible to boot.

I'm currently using a SanDisk SDDR-B531-GN6NN micro SD reader. The micro SD card I'm using with it is a SanDisk 32GB "Max Endurance". Had no issue installing unraid on the SD card or registering my licence key to the card reader's GUID.

I like this SD card reader because of its a small form factor, barely stick past the case's recess for the MB i/o shield. It's small enough that it's even suitable for being installed internally using an internal USB port if you're using a server mobo or a USB header to USB A adapter like this or this (I haven't bought or used either of the adaptors linked, they're just examples not recommendations).

We’re you able to install Unraid using the Unraid usb tool or did you need to manually install Unraid ?

I used the usb tool. I have couple more of that SD card reader and used them to double check. The USB tool detected each one as having a different GUID and let me install unRAID to each of them.

I also used SanDisk SDDR-B531-GN6NN micro SD reader with a SanDisk 32GB High Endurance microSD card. Downloaded the flash backup zip from the Unraid UI and used the Unraid installation/creation tool from the website to install the zip. Transferred my license from old USB Flash drive and everything is up and running.

I've also used the microSD reader that comes with the Samsung Pro Ultimate, and it works seamlessly. In fact, I believe the readers included with both the Pro Plus and Pro Ultimate series are identical.

So far, I haven't encountered any issues with it, and I perform regular backups, so I'm not particularly concerned about the device failing.

Just got this reader and card and it is working perfectly.  I already tried switching between two cards by running the usb creator and then copying all the files from a previous card and it works.  Very easy.

I was a little worried about the card just being open to the back, so I cam eup with a 3d printed enclosure for the reader with the card.  Basically turns it into a full usb drive that I can but the zip tie and swap the card out easily enough.  I'm just using some rubber sstrips right now to secure it inside the enclosure but at some point I will use something like Sugru to perfectly mold the inside of the enclosure to the reader with card.

Can you figure out a way to take the temperature inside the enclosure? I'd be afraid of cooking it.

Hmm,  Hadn't thought too much about it.  I can do a test using a temp probe.  I'll put a small hole just big enough for the probe and see what temps I end up getting.  The Sandisk industrial card is rated up to 85C and 190TB lifetime.  I think it should be fine.  Worst case I will design the enclosure with holes in the top and bottom so it has more of a bumper appearance but lets the actual top and bottom of the reader breathe.  I'll report back once I get this data!

What about the reader? Same?

I found one place that says it is rated to 60C, but I have no idea if that is reliable since it isn't listed on any spec sheet.  I have a second reader and card coming this weekend.  I will do a test using my enclosure do a sustained write sequence to the card to reay heat it up and stress test it and report back the temps it hits inside the enclosure right against the reader.

I did a few tests writing to an sd card constantly for 30 minutes and inside the enclosure never hit above 50C.  Obviously not a fully scientific test, but encouraging at least.  I would be surprised if modern hardware like a card reader can't be good to at least 60C for extended periods.

And this should only happen with the Unraid flash USB if the syslog is set to mirror to the flash drive.  Otherwise, the only writes should be an occassional configuration update.  Mostly, the Unraid flash gets read on boot and is not accessed a lot after that.

Been running it now for a week and everything seems to be going great!  I can get a couple extra of the sd cards to keep on hand in case one dies and no worries about needing to change keys!

I just got the SanDisk MobileMate and it came like this; with bent pins:
image.thumb.png.f51d48e54c3f556caacf37b5f90f7584.png

So the microSD cards sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, depending on weather the contact want's to work or not.

Judging by the comments on the Amazon product page, it seems that it is not an uncommon issue, so I'm definitely not getting this usb adapter again. Any recommendations of a good card reader with unique GUID?

I really do not understand why SanDisk would make such a weak contact mechanism.

PS: I've been reading this thread and I can't believe people are still buying and recommending this shitty adapter. Read the bad comments on Amazon, for god sake. This card reader could damage your cards and even your PC if you are very unlucky. Terrible recommendation guys.

This is just unbelievable. I just got the SanDisk QuickFlow and it came like this:
image.thumb.png.10706014390da06daae072b4ebd74fa8.png

And, as you might suspect, it does not work with any of my microSD cards. I'm either the unluckiest person on the planet or these devices are shit.

I'm still using the same mobile mate from 2021 that I referred to in my post up thread. I also have a couple others I bought around the same time that I use for work. They haven't ever had any issues and none have bent contacts.

The vast majority of the reviews on the Amazon page for the mobile mate are positive. Pretty much all high volume products on amazon will have some amount of negative reviews about manufacturing defects that slipped through QA. Based on the fact you had this defect in two different SKUs, sandisk has either had an uptick in QA issues or you're just super unlucky.

The main purpose of this thread is to identify what card reader models have unique GUIDs for licensing purposes not determine the chance you'll receive a faulty unit. We as individuals can only report on our own experiences. If you actually go back to what we have written in this thread you'll see all we said was that it worked for us, just like you have reported the issues you've had. It's up to all the lurkers reading this thead to take these individual reports and determine what to buy for their own unRAID setup.
