While we wait for LT to add this feature I've been playing with multiple btrfs pools with the help of UD plugin for some time with, while there are some limitations it's been working great, I wrote a FAQ entry for anyone who wants to try it, but note it's work in progress, it should be safe but use at own risk:

I will definitely check it out! thanks!

BUMP for inclusion in unRaid 6.6!!!!!!!! (please)

  • 3 weeks later...

I would Love this as well!

The option to have multiple (as in more than one) cache pools and select what cache pool is used for a share would be very beneficial!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Another +1. It would be quite nice to have a cache pool just for VMs and docker containers.

  • 1 month later...

+1 for this.

A week ago I had to make a vm to create a software raid of unassigned devices to pool together a bunch of drives so I could back up a server up to itself..... super needlessly complicated....

or we could have more cache pools and things would be awesome to the max. TO THE MAX! Think about it, @limetech, we're taking about THE MAX here!

I'm super keen on this (still) purely to have a pool dedicated to VMs.

Wouldn't need to involve the mover and assuming your using btrfs, snapshotting VMs could come into play.

In this case it could also allow an option for VMs  pool to start independently of the rest of the array, bonus for those utilizing a VM for networking purposes (thinking pfSense for starters).

The NVMe use-case mentioned previously is very applicable.

Mainly it is order of magnitude difference in performance that drives this feature request.

+1 to this feature.

+1 feature request.
didn't make it to 6.6.0 😢

Im a bit bummed we can’t even get a wink, nod, or swatted with a paper and told not pee on the rug in relation to this.

+1 to this! I would love to have a fast cache pool for my VM's and Docker, and then another cache pool for my user shares to cache to.

THANK YOU ! Although it is clearly a 'MacGyver' trick to fix the issue, being able to set up cache pools through UD is already a pretty good option. In that comment you also said that LT was already planning to add such feature innately to unRaid however I haven't been able to find any source regarding that. May I ask if you have more informations regarding this subject ? After all, it stands to reason to ask such possibility especially with the possibility to create VMs and dockers and the like where most users would prefer to have each VMs / docker cleanly separated in order to avoid stepping on each other's performances and space.

Sorry can't point to a specific post but Tom mentioned several times that multiple cache pools are on the roadmap, thought can't tell if it's going to happen on the next release or v8, but it should be soon™

That's pretty good news. I suppose you don't have any speculation on the 'soon' delay ? (I mean, everyone got a definition of 'soon'... Like how my mom use to say 'in 5 minutes' but 4 hours later she's still not there xd). Still, pretty nice to know it's on the roadmap \o/

No, sorry, soon™ is a running joke in the community, it can mean a few days, or a few years.

And we're currently at 1.5 years.... every day a little closer.....

I don't even understand why Unassigned devices isn't already integrated instead of a plugin given how integral it is to obtaining seriously increased functionality

Amen!

This would be great, I guess I run a normal setup where dockers would be on a pool with SSD disks and I would then want another pool with HDD disks

  • 3 weeks later...

This would be great for SSD vs HD vs M.2 drive pools.  :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Would love this feature, cant believe it's not done already.  What hardware workarounds could I use for an SSD or NVMe mirror raid?

  • 3 weeks later...

Just throwing my 'vote' in, would also love multiple cache pools.

I would dedicate 1 pool to just VM's and then have another pool act as a write cache pool for the storage array.

we all bump

for useful features and integrations we all seem to agree are something beneficial to the wider unRaid community
