Intel Socket 1151 Motherboards with IPMI AND Support for iGPU
Thanks for sharing, @Hoopster. One thing I did with the ipmi plugin for my fans pulling air across the hard drives (and into the case)... I do have it linked to HDD temp, but I set the minimum percentage to a higher level (currently 70%, since my Noctua fans are pretty darn quiet). That way I'm always getting adequate airflow into the case, and only bump it up to above 70% when the HDDs need additional cooling. So far I've found this to be the best balance for my case and temps.

@Burizado yeah, it’s 50% of RAM. Re: LAN ports, I have not, and everything I’ve read is it’s not worth the hassle. Too many complications for extra bandwidth that’s not needed 98% of the time. Not saying you shouldn’t try, but I’ve never felt the need to. My drives don’t exceed gigabit anyway—even my SSDs.

@Hoopster Sure thing. I've attached it since it's pretty big. I did not setup the GUI link within the container setup yet, so I just manually go to my IP:port. Edit: Yes, I did passthrough the GPU, but I'm not entirely sure Rosetta is using GPU at this point.

@Hoopster I saw that you were experiencing lockups. I can't speak to the original container, but I manually installed the new linuxserver boinc and ran it all last night on 4 cores/8 threads. Luckily no lockups for me so far (knock on wood). I did do the pinning and the recommended settings, as well as setting some manual processor limitations within the app. Maybe try the new container? This is me right now:

@Burizado Glad you got it sorted! Personally I switched from /tmp to /dev/shm for transcodes only because with 64GB I can't imagine needing more than 32GB of transcode space. Still not sure what best practice is (it used to be /tmp), but its been working well for me. Curious, how are your temps with your bigger Noctua tower cooler? My CPU temps seem to bounce all over the place. Idle in the lower 30s, but under any load it jumps around between 40-80C. Could be my smaller cooler, or the fact I used a thermal pad instead of paste. Or maybe because I have Smart Fan Control for most of the fans. But I'm interested to get some more datapoints on this processor. Thanks!

v4-preview branch working for anyone else? Mine seems to have bombed out in the last few days. Tried starting fresh and still getting an sqlite error 14.

Similar to this user, I did need to change the setting from auto to onboard graphics.

Intel Socket 1151 Motherboards with IPMI AND Support for iGPU
Everything has been smooth sailing here! Digging this setup knowing I have the power when needed, but even with multiple Plex transcodes and QSV, the CPU sits pretty idle the majority of the time. Only two items that have stumped me so far: 1. The mobo temp stays very consistent in the mid 20C-range. However yesterday I got a notification of critical temp, and saw that IPMI was reporting the mobo temp at 87C degrees. The server was completely idle, CPU temp was 31C, and the fans were operating as normal (which I have set to be operating at 75% of full speed at a minimum. Had to reboot the server to correct and haven't seen the same since. Stuck sensor, maybe? 2. Despite having IPMI plugged in via its dedicated port, I am not able to access the HTML5 IPMI GUI from the server itself (when at work I utilize Guacamole to RDP to a Win 10 VM or Firefox container). Not a showstopper since I can connect via openvpn to my router if needed, but it is odd. I thought that would only be an issue with a shared LAN/IPMI port.

@Burizado Thanks! Yep, I contacted ASRock after I bought the combo to request the beta BIOS. They replied fairly quickly with a link to download. Also, while not directed to me, both VT-x and VT-d were enabled by default in the BIOS. The problem I made was configuring the BIOS first then flashing. Some of the settings didn't seem to stick (explicitly enablling the onboard graphics, for example). I'd recommend flashing first thing, then configuring. Flashing is super simple. Throw the binary onto a flash drive, plug it in, and select the option for Instant Flash during POST.

It's not... whatever Dynamix temp is polling for CPU temp is not what IPMI is reporting. I did find another option (coretemp instead of cpu temp) which is closer, but still doesn't line up with what IPMI is reporting for CPU temp. Dunno.

Migration complete! The most challenging parts stemmed more from booting back into unRAID and making sure my device assignments were correct (the first time none of my SSDs showed up. Seems I had a bad breakout cable, so I had to swap it out. Luckily I had an extra one). For some reason unRAID also thought I had an unclean shutdown (I didn't), so I had to cancel the parity check. I'll probably kick it off again in a day or two once I've had time to play around with everything. So far all seems to be running well! The IPMI on this board is fantastic--so much better than my old SM mobo that required an outdated java client. Idle temps look great so far with the Noctua NH-U9S paired with an IC graphite thermal pad instead of thermal paste. It was a bit of a gamble on my part, but everything I've read said it really only loses about 2C compared with high quality paste, with the benefit of it not having a limited lifespan like paste. So far so good. @Hoopster did you have to do anything special to get the Dynamix temp plugin to detect the "array fan speed"? All I get is "Not used" and am not presented with any options. Also, oddly, it is constantly reporting 32C. The sensors it detected were coretemp and nct6775. Even when stress testing my CPU with a video encode, it stayed at 32C, whereas the IPMI support plugin showed it hovering between 70-74C. Looks like our cpu coolers are both performing well! Also, are there vulnerability mitigations that I need to disable in the BIOS? Despite my having installed the plugin, I still seem to have some enabled. Looking forward to playing around with everything some more in the coming days. Super excited about this upgrade.

Pretty sure if you edit the container and access the advanced settings, you can change the webgui URL to your liking.

@Hoopster Oh nice. That’s super helpful. Thank you kindly! Truth be told I’d probably rarely hit 100% if ever at all. I run a couple VMs and a lot of containers but given the 16 threads and QSV I think there’s plenty of headroom with this processor. Ok, now I’m leaning toward the Noctua... I think I’ll give it a shot tomorrow when I get my delivery!

Decisions decisions. Picked up 2 cpu coolers: the same Be Quiet that Hoopster used, and the Noctua NH-U9S (with the intention of returning one of them). Noctua support seemed to think that the NH-U9S may not be enough for this processor. I can't find any documentation that says the 2288G peaks at 230W... but now I'm leaning towards the Be Quiet since Hoopster has had good results. Any thoughts?

@Burizado, I purchased as-is then messaged the seller letting him know I was waiting to make payment until he let me know what to do about the extra RAM. Later that evening he messaged me asking to complete the auction payment and he would send a separate PP invoice for remaining amount (which he did about a day later). I think he's just busy--there were times prior to my purchase when I'd ask a question via ebay and he would be very responsive, then answers to follow up Qs would be fairly delayed. My combo should be arriving tomorrow!

I purchased one of the new combos and upped the RAM to 64GB. Hoping it ships early next week. Thanks, Hoopster, for posting about your experience and guiding me through this process!

Wish I pulled the trigger when you posted about this. I reached out to them asking if they were going to offer a similar package and they told me memory is 1-3 months out and much more expensive. How's your combo working out??

Hmmm... interesting. I've tried with Chrome, Brave, and Firefox to access the Firefox docker via Guacamole. Don't think I have any configuration or extensions that would cause this (though I did perform the trick you referenced to open new windows in a tab, but that's about it). I'll keep playing around. Thanks!

Another weird question--if I try to access the unRAID GUI web-based terminal, I can't see the text output or my own input. It's just a grey box with a visible cursor and nothing else. Any ideas of how to get the terminal to properly display? Thanks in advance!

Djoss actually answered a similar question of mine here. Working great for me--new windows are opened as a new tab, which can easily be closed.

Watching this thread! I am looking to upgrade my server as well and am in the same boat of wanting both ipmi and igpu for quicksync. Please keep us posted!

Has anyone seen Guacozy before? Looks really interesting! Wonder if it can be run alongside this container to use the existing guacd service. https://github.com/paidem/guacozy

[Support] Djoss - Firefox
Weird/basic question, but does anyone know of a keyboard shortcut to switch between or close Firefox windows? In the unRAID gui, for example, if I click on a docker log, the window goes full screen and I have no ability to just close that individual window (or navigate to something else) that I am aware of. Thanks in advance!

WireGuard quickstart
Thanks for the quick writeup! I was scratching my head for a good 10 minutes until I realized I had to toggle Inactive to Active. Not sure why my mind read that as clicking inactive would inactivate it. Once I properly toggled that setting, my phone immediately connected. I can access my network devices by IP address, but didn't have any luck by local hostname. Not sure if its a config issue on my router (pfsense) or just how it is with Wireguard. No issue with that though when connecting via openvpn on pfsense. This is a great method to get secure access to your server/network without much fuss, and am looking forward to seeing how the implementation progresses! I think it will help a lot of unRAID users!
