  1. Regarding using 'external storage' to set everything up, would i just first create an unraid share (e.g. named onecloud) then use the SMB/NAS instructions from that guide? Easy as that?
  2. Thanks gfjar, appreciate the prompt and detailed reply! :-)
  3. I know its christmas but can anyone shed some light? :-)
  4. Hey bp just thought i would offer my 2c. Watch your drives closely over the next few weeks as a machine that has been sitting for that long will probably lose at least a drive, if not more. My machine was offline for about 6 months and lost 3 over a period of a couple months after being put back into production. It happens :-(
  5. It's a bit hard to understand without seeing it in person but I think that sounds right. The top two fans are probably manual control and the front fans could be split onto a single header and controlled via software (if you felt the need) but to be honest for case fans, most of the time they just run at a constant speed which is fine. I feel your pain with the Aus heat.. it's been a hot summer and we're barely in it yet. The office I'm in doesn't have aircon and with up to 3 PC's on at once and the afternoon sun on the window my drives are hovering around 40 as well..
  6. Hey guys, I'm currently running 5.0.6 and thinking about moving to 6.0b12 to take advantage of docker & in particular owncloud but I have a couple of questions.. Is it possible to create an OwnCloud user share for the data? In this thread, people were mentioning "slow sync" etc. If data is stored locally, what is there to sync? Does the plugin have updated documentation on getting everything setup since the testing in this thread? Is the mySQL plugin suitable for use with OC? Has anyone tested this? Is it better/worse/buggier than the alternatives? I have limited linux knowledge & solid IT knowledge, how time consuming & difficult would you say everything is to setup? I don't really want to spend weeks configuring everything if I can avoid it, I just don't have much spare time right now (study/new job, etc) Sorry for all the questions, just trying to decide if this is the right option for us. Looking for a cloud solution as an alternative to OneDrive/DropBox etc. for photos and I think OC is going to be the way to go.
  7. Here's the manufacturer's page (give the images a few seconds to display): http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/node-series/node-804
  8. Wow, sorry- I didn't realize AMD had a multicore Sempron. Looks like a good setup.
  9. While it might be tempting to go with more horsepower you'll really pay for it in terms of $. In your case I'd probably avoid an Atom board and go for something like a Celeron or i3. Core i3s are surprisingly powerful and power-efficient but don't support virtualization so are a good choice for a non-VM unRAID with a little headroom for transcoding or whatever down the track.
  10. I'm curious as to why you paired 16gb of ram with a Sempron? Why so much ram with a CPU that doesn't support virtualization? Also I would be cautious with that controller card.. while it says Linux 2.6x, a quick StartPage search (I'm ditching google) revealed uses dual chipsets to get 8 ports based on the Marvell 88SE9705 and I didn't get any search results for that chipset at all on this forum so I'm not sure if it has even been tested. Chipset ref: http://www.sybausa.com/productInfo.php?iid=1433 If you need an 8 port controller card, an M1015 would probably be a better choice though I don't have experience with these personally so I'm not aware of their limitations. Your case only supports 8 drives officially, unless you're planning on getting fancy with your drive mounting I'd go with something cheaper like the Adaptec 1430SA which is tried and tested (I even have one myself) - this will give you 4 drives onboard and 4 drives on the controller card: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adaptec-AAR-1430SA-PCIe-SATA-Raid-Controller-/331387439242?pt=US_Computer_Disk_Controllers_RAID_Cards&hash=item4d283b088a
  11. +1 - SSD arrays are the future! A future where I have money
  12. I accept no responsibility for said reboot but do empathize with you Looks good though, how are you finding working in an ITX case? I've built a couple but not a lot.
  13. I'm not sure exactly, I've swapped out the drive for now as it got even hotter (47 degrees) and was performing badly- the replacement seems to be OK but I haven't had time to test it properly yet, job interview/study/running around. I've moved the replacement to a cooler position as well, I'll run a few independent tests on the drive I pulled out (and get it hot first) and if it looks OK maybe I'll keep it for something else. It's probably just getting tired.
  14. Pics or it didn't happen. Kidding.. but seriously.. got any photos? It's why everyone comes to the UCD thread! :-)
  15. I spoke too soon once again :'( After an hour or so of heavy copying, back to 28-30MB/Sec and cache drive is at 46 degrees. I have a spare certified repaired drive here (same model) I might try as a replacement in the interim and see what happens. Syslog attached. syslog.txt
  16. Well, I don't know what caused it but I'm going to have to call this solved again for now. Yesterday I realized the BIOS date was wrong on my server (mobo battery is dying). After correcting it I shut everything down and today it starts boot-looping. I removed the flash, re-ran make_bootable and checked over the BIOS settings again. I noticed the controllers were in IDE Mode instead of AHCI.. probably since the last time the BIOS reset. I re-configured it all, rebooted and all looks good now. Over 100MB/Sec writes again. Bad luck, bad flash, bad bios reset.. who knows. Fixed
  17. This is definitely a network issue and based on the consistent speed probably not a cable. When you say router, is it a gigabit router? Most routers in-built switch is 100MB/Sec. Check the specifications online if you aren't sure. To check your link speed, assuming eth0 is your network port, type: root@Tower:~# ethtool eth0
  18. Just to add to this- it seems that my cache drive writes while working again have significantly decreased in write speed. Previously I was getting ~100MB/Sec and now I get around 30MB/Sec. The data is being written to the cache drive (not the array) according to my mapped share and the unraid webUI (# writes).
  19. Cache drives make unRAID so much better in my opinion. Plus the option of using a RAID volume as a cache drive is even better (such as mirroring or striping two SSDs for use as a cache volume). One thing I would recommend is also mapping your cache drive in Windows so that you can watch the usage as you perform writes. I find this useful in knowing both a) the mover is functioning as intended, and b) watching the usage of the cache drive on "big write" days when a few hundred GB might need to be moved. Screenshot example attached.
  20. Hey guys, So a reboot seems to have fixed this but I thought I'd dump my log since it was really weird and kind of out of the blue. I was copying an MKV across to my unraid box and as I shut down a VM my desktop was running (which shares the same network adapter on my desktop) as if almost perfectly timed my copy bombed and as far as I can tell my cache drive became read-only. I was left with a 0byte file on my cache drive and no longer able to write. I was able to delete the file from the cache drive then rebooted the server then everything seems to be good again. Any ideas on what might have caused this? Is my cache drive on it's way out? Syslog (from webui) + cache drive smart report attached. syslog_tail.txt smartctl.txt
  21. I just had a look at the board and my guess is so you can fit a dual slot GPU in the bottom PCI-E slot. It is a very silly position nonetheless.. :-)
  22. But i want it nowwwww..... Seriously though. Sexy.. but will unRAID support it?
  23. I don't know enough about iTunes to be of much help sorry, but a quick google yielded this which may be of some use to you: https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bd62ee3d-a933-4cad-ae9b-fd38adc994c0/whs-2011-and-itunes-105?forum=whs2011 It's not directly related but the comments reference windows shares and symbolic links.
  24. What bk said, 5.0.6 is the latest stable and is a good upgrade from 4.7. Version 6 is nearly at b11 ("nearly") but I wouldn't hold your breath for a stable release until some time next year.
