    How much UPS?

Have not tried this with non APC UPS but I can confirm that master/slave works. I have the UPS data connected to my unRAID box and my PC is also running apcupsd but it is set to get the data over the network from unRAID (router is also on the UPS).
  2. I went ahead and registered at yamaha just so I could read your receiver's manual. On page 53 of the English pdf it mentions playing from a NAS with DLNA. There is a DLNA package for unRAID. You won't get the iTunes user interface this way, but it should work. On page 58 of the English pdf it shows that you can play music from an iPad with iOS 4.3.3 or later if it is connected to the same router as your receiver. So, if you can work out how to play music on your iPad from your unRAID then you probably can play it on the receiver using the iPad as the player.
  3. I tried to download your receiver's manual but yamaha wanted me to sign in. Since the receiver does DLNA you might try searching this forum and other places for DLNA to see if you get any ideas.
  4. I have a mini-ITX in my system, with 4 SATA on mobo and 4 SATA on 1430SA. No hardware issues since I built it about a year ago. I don't expect to ever need more.
  5. Probably the logitech extender is needed to convert logitech rf into the appropriate ir, but there are plenty of ir extenders on the market and I would think they would probably work since in that case the remote would just be sending ir. Google ir remote extender. I also have a dinovo mini. It is definitely rf of some sort, don't remember if it's bluetooth or some other wireless protocol. IR only works with line-of-sight, although sometimes reflections allow it to hit the receiver with some obstructions. Most of my components are behind frosted glass and IR works just fine.
  6. Also, a touchscreen is certainly cool, but you kind of have to look at it to operate it. Other Harmony models have real buttons that you can operate by feel without taking your eyes off the TV. Maybe something to consider.
  7. Just looked at the 1100 on Logitech site. I'm sure it does IR. It also has the capability to control hidden IR devices with an RF extender. Most devices only do IR so if it did not do IR it would not be able to control most devices. My HTPC has Wake on USB, so if you can get that to work a Harmony should work to wake your computer if it is using a USB IR receiver.
  8. Once you get a Harmony set up you won't want to use anything else. Even though lots of remotes will control multiple devices, you have to constantly tell them which device you want to control. With the Harmony it knows what device to control for each command. I don't know about the 1100 but I have a Harmony 880. It doesn't do rf but the ir works fine with the ir receivers commonly used with Windows MediaCenter, and I have successfully used it to control XBMC. You can find more info on the logitech forums or the xbmc wiki or forums.
  9. You might be able to use the old "screwdriver in the ear" trick to hear which drives are spunup. Put the tip of a screwdriver on a drive and the handle in your ear. I think there is a way to make unRAID spinup or spindown individual drives from the command line. Do a search.
  10. I have been running 3 of these since I first built my system last May with no issues.
  11. I'll let those more experienced help with unRAID specific advice, but here is an old trick for locating the source of sounds: Put the tip of a screwdriver against the component and the handle in your ear. If it is the component making the sound it will be obvious. If not move on to another component.
  12. Yes, you could even get a single drive hot-swap bay for it. (like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817990001 ) keep in mind that motherboard combo is limited to 6 drives. (unless i overlooked something) Yes that is true - so I could look for a mb with 5-6 sata and use the add on card. There is a place at the bottom of the external bay for a 2.5" drive, so you can put 8 drives in this case (7 x 3.5" + 1 x 2.5"). Check out my specs. I have this case with a 4-port mobo and 4-port SATA card. I have hotswap in the external bay to use to backup critical data to another bare drive for offsite storage. I use the 2.5" spot for the cache drive. Currently I only have 4 of the 3.5" internal bays filled.
  13. I've been using TreeSize for years as well. No financial interest in DOpus. I just occasionally pay for things that I think are worthwhile, such as unRAID. If you want free stuff for Window 7 check out these lists over at sevenforums: FREE Great Programs for Window 7 Free Native 64-bit programs There are even some interesting free file managers in those lists that I might consider if I hadn't already paid for DOpus. Another free one I use that is on one of those lists is Cobian Backup
  14. Here are some great Windows file management utilities that I have been using recently with my unRAID. These are all freeware: ExactFile This will make and check md5 files that are compatible with md5deep. Duplicate Cleaner Find and remove duplicate files. Lots of options for matching and selecting what to remove. DeltaCopy Rsync client and server. Not free, but couldn't live without it, unRAID or not: Directory Opus Anyone else found anything good?
  15. I'll let someone else help you with the installation, but as for Windows rsync, I use DeltaCopy, which provides both client and server.
  16. I am using DeltaCopy as rsync server on Windows.
  17. Speakers and room acoustics are where the big differences in sound come from these days because most quality electronics are practically equivalent as far as sound quality goes. In other words, there are a lot of good choices <$400. I would concentrate on getting the inputs, outputs (plus spares), and other features you want and not worry too much about sound quality. A lot of manufacturers have the user manuals online these days and I always start there when I want to compare features. Here is what I am using now and it does what I need. There are plenty of others.
  18. I used the free version of True Image that came with a Seagate drive I bought to create images of 2 desktops and a laptop soon after I got my unRAID build up in May, and this week I was able to restore one of the desktops after the boot drive failed.
  19. It's been 2 months since my first post and everything has been great. I added an Adaptec 1430SA to my initial build to get ready for expansion. Then, to test it I added an old 160GB drive and put some files on it. When a newegg deal for 2TB HITACHI 5K3000 came up, I got one and tested drive upgrade by replacing the 160GB. It worked! I have also added a hotswap bay which I am using to backup critical data for storage offsite. I have had 2 monthly parity checks now, so I am attaching the syslog for certification of the motherboard. Thanks everyone syslog-2011-06-01.zip
  20. VBR is really the way to go with modern codecs, and mp3 @ VBR 192 is probably overkill for quality. See Hydrogenaudio where they test these things scientifically You should archive lossless not because it sounds better but because it can be converted to any other codec and you are effectively starting from the original instead of converting lossy to lossy
  21. dBpoweramp Batch Ripper Also, you should rip to FLAC for archiving. If anyone is interested in yet another obsession, this one related to the technical aspects of digital music, check out Hydrogenaudio
  22. I just added an Adaptec 1430sa to my build to prepare it for future expansion, and attached an old 160GB drive to it for testing. Precleared last night and everything seems OK but have not added it to the array yet. I've seen comments about disabling the BIOS on this card but no details on how to do this. The mobo BIOS doesn't seem to have any way to disable the Adaptec BIOS, and if I go into BIOS setup for the Adaptec it doesn't have anything for disabling it either. Does "disable" just mean make sure it is not setup for RAID? It is already reporting JBOD which I think must be the default and the only possibility since I only have one drive attached to it. I also notice in the syslog that this drive is "sata_mv" instead of "ahci" like the 4 drives on the mobo. Just want to make sure I have set this up correctly. Here is the filtered syslog for this drive from unMenu: Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: scsi7 : sata_mv (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: ata7: SATA max UDMA/133 mmio m1048576@0xf9f00000 port 0xf9f22000 irq 19 (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: ata7: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: ata7.00: ATA-7: ST3160812AS, 3.AHL, max UDMA/100 (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: ata7.00: 312581808 sectors, multi 0: LBA48 NCQ (depth 31/32) (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: ata7.00: configured for UDMA/100 (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: scsi 7:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA ST3160812AS 3.AH PQ: 0 ANSI: 5 (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sde] 312581808 512-byte logical blocks: (160 GB/149 GiB) (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sde] Write Protect is off (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sde] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sde] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: sde: sde1 (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:08 unSERVER kernel: sd 7:0:0:0: [sde] Attached SCSI disk (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:10 unSERVER emhttp: pci-0000:02:00.0-scsi-0:0:0:0 host7 (sde) ST3160812AS_5LSB9HLW (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:10 unSERVER kernel: md: unRAID driver 1.1.1 installed (System) Apr 26 23:27:10 unSERVER kernel: md: import disk0: [8,16] (sdb) ST2000DL003-9VT1 5YD1A5DL size: 1953514552 (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:10 unSERVER kernel: md: import disk1: [8,32] (sdc) ST2000DL003-9VT1 5YD1C5H9 size: 1953514552 (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:10 unSERVER kernel: md: import disk2: [8,48] (sdd) ST2000DL003-9VT1 5YD17WWD size: 1953514552 (Drive related) Apr 26 23:27:10 unSERVER kernel: md: recovery thread woken up ... 23. Just ordered one of these on buy.com A little cheaper than newegg and free shipping.
  24. Thanks. Not only did this work, but your explanation helped me understand what was going on. The process that was preventing unmount was mysqld. So, do I need to manually kill mysqld every time I want to stop the array, or is there a better way?
