With the recent update, v0.9.7.12.407-db37d6d, my hard drives no longer spin down.  I confirmed that my lib updates are set to daily, etc.  When I check to see what files are open, thus preventing the hd's from spinning down, it's Plex.

Anyone else having this issue?  I did not have this issue with previous releases.

Ok, thanks - that's good.  So when I check for open files, it clearly shows it Plex and I have no clients running.  Could there be a setting on the PMS that I missed that could prevent them from spinning down?  I already changed the lib update to dailey.  For most settings, I left everything at defaults, but perhaps something got changed.

Thanks

Did you ever move your Plex library to your cache drive? If you did, that should be the only drive spun up.

yes I did,

Lib dir:  /mnt/cache/plugins/plex

tmp dir is:  /tmp

next question?

Can you post the results of "lsof /mnt/*"

Sure, here you go.  This morning I found that only the parity drive was spun down., where as before this last update I would find all drives spun down.

Thanks!

Plex looks like it should only be keeping your cache drive awake. Something is keeping a connection with those users shares alive and if those shares span all your disks that is why they are all not sleeping. What devices do you access your server from?

Ok, powered off every possible client in my house, yet I am unable to use the webgui to spin down all drives.  Most will spin down, but they come back and with the same Plex entires in the "lsof /mnt/*" command.

This must have something to do with the recent version upgrade.  Is there a way to track down what is causing this?

What's keeping them spun up is this:

smbd    7631        root  cwd    DIR  0,13      128 2190433320963 /mnt/user/movies

smbd    7631        root  25r  DIR  0,13      608 2190433320964 /mnt/user/Backup

smbd    7631        root  30r  DIR  0,13      128 2190433320963 /mnt/user/movies

smbd    7631        root  32r  DIR  0,13        96 2190433322934 /mnt/user/Kidmovies

smbd    7631        root  33r  DIR  0,13      160 2190433445031 /mnt/user/mac

smbd    7631        root  34r  DIR  0,13      128    8590076673 /mnt/user/pch1

smbd    7631        root  35r  DIR  0,13      136 1219771055630 /mnt/user/pch2

smbd    7631        root  36r  DIR  0,13      304    8590076674 /mnt/user/Win7

smbd    12892        root  cwd    DIR  0,13      128 2190433320963 /mnt/user/movies

Something is using those user shares, thus keeping the disks those shares reside on spun up.

I really don't think the issue is the most recent version of Plex because I'm running it and my drives are all spun down.

Use fuser to determine what processes are using those shares. So for instance "fuser -mv /mnt/user/movies" will show you what processes are using the "movies" share.

Then type "ps -ef | grep " and the proccess ID numbers (PID) of the processes that are using them. Ex: "ps -ef | grep 18833". The results will show you what processes are using those files.

well it looks like elan is thinking of stopping the unraid fork

- We've seen numerous issues with unRAID systems over the years, crazy hanging stuff related to kernel bugs, network performance issues, etc., which tempt us to stop supporting the platform.

not sure what he is talking about but find it weird

I just ordered a new processor so I could run Plex!

Thanks!  I will investigate further and determine if Plex related or not.  If not, then I'll move this to another thread.

Thanks again for all the help!

Need some help with PMS on unRAID if anyone can. Have installed the latest tgz file in the boot/extra folder, rebooted and all up and running without a problem (using the standard settings). However upon reboot of unRAID PMS loses all settings and comes up with the user agreement page with no libraries or channels.

Has anyone come across this?

Set 'library directory' and 'temp directory' to something else than your flash drive

Ok, I need a little more help, in over my head here.  Given I still think it is Plex, I'll post here.  If we can confirm it's not Plex, I'll move to a more appropiate thread.

Just to keep things simple, I first hit the "Spin Down" button on my unraid server webgui.

Using Putty, I issued the following command;

fuser -mv /mnt/user/movies

The results were;

root@Tower:~# fuser -mv /mnt/user/movies

                    USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND

/mnt/user/movies:    root      4102 ..c.. smbd

                              root      24812 ..c.. smbd

                              root      24815 ..c.. smbd

I then issued the command;

ps -ef | grep 4102

Results were;

root      4102  7014  0 Feb13 ?        00:00:35 /usr/sbin/smbd -D

root    18916 17951  0 13:00 pts/0    00:00:00 grep 4102

I tried another PID and got;

root@Tower:~# ps -ef | grep 24815

root    19220 17951  0 13:01 pts/0    00:00:00 grep 24815

root    24815  7014  0 Feb12 ?        00:00:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D

None of this tells me anything, LOL

It would seem I need to drill deaper, but how?  Oh, and after a few mintues, all drives but the parity spin back up.

Thanks!

smbd is the samba daemon. Something on your network is trying to access those shares. Plex doesn't use samba to build it's library since it's on the same server. Disable the Plex service and see if you still have the issue.

Ok, I disabled the PMS on the Settings page, and the drives still do not spin down, or stay down.

Perhaps this has something to do with the new updated samba (new version in v5 rc11).

While not Plex specific, do you know how to tell which clients(what) are making these connections?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if it's related, but I've noticed that one drive reports as spun up and in unmenu it's spun down with RC11 (I upgraded from 4.7).

Here's the thread I posted about it.  Could it be the same issue?  Are you also running unmenu to check both?

I doubt that it's plex related because doesn't it run as root:unraid-plex isn't it?  Also with my issue one drive should not spin up, both should because that's how it's set up as shares, and Plex is using the shares, not the individual discs.

Plex has been running great after sorting out the permissions issue, but that was associated with my upgrade from 4.7 and my apps drive.  Love the interface, very easy to use.

Just a shame that WDTV doesn't have a native app. :(

Most likely not related to Plex, but still working on it.  I do not use unmenu and do not want to.

I do run Simple Features, which really needs to be updated after rc11, so that could be part of it.

I setup a path for Transcoding to a folder in the cache drive and it helps the playback considerably. There is still some hiccups here and there ... but much better.

Plex web interface > Settings > Transcoder > Transcoder temporary directory

Plex web interface > Settings > Transcoder > Transcoder temporary directory

cool, I just set mine to  /tmp

What did you set yours to?

Don't know how much space it needs for this but /tmp is in RAM

How are people dealing with the issue of mtime not being updated? I want to be able to delete the media on the unraid server and have plex recognize that the file is deleted and update as such.

I have my shows mount at /mnt/user/TV Shows

When I want to get rid of a show I just go in and delete the file from my Windows box through a Samba share. However, Plex does not update when that happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
