Plex Media Server

With the recent update, v0.9.7.12.407-db37d6d, my hard drives no longer spin down.  I confirmed that my lib updates are set to daily, etc.  When I check to see what files are open, thus preventing the hd's from spinning down, it's Plex.

Anyone else having this issue?  I did not have this issue with previous releases.

I just noticed that the latest version (plexpass users only for time being has this fix: - Fix a case where we didn't allow the host system to sleep.), so hopefully that should clear your issue with drives not spinning down.

That's great news, as this has been driving me crazy.

If I understand correctly, I just need to wait for the next PMS update, correct and that update has fixed the problem?

I finally got my Plex client & server working. The bad thing is every time I reboot I get the following errors which prevents me from starting the Plex server.

export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8

export LANG=en_US.UTF-8

If I delete them out of my exportsettings file and i can start the Plex server once again. Does anyone have an idea of how I stop this from coming back again?

Thanks

I thought you already ruled out Plex being the cause. You still have the issue even when Plex is disabled.

I was having the same problem with both lines reappearing in exportsettings even tho' I'd deleted them. I resolved this by drilling into PlexMediaServer-0.9.7.12.407-db37d6d-unRAID.txz and finding both lines in a file and deleting them from there. Can't remember what file and something in the back of my mind tells me it could have been two files where I deleted both lines.

If you want I can upload my file to dropbox for you to test...

Me too.  I tried disabling, but not uninstalling.  Not sure how PMS works because it still was "installed" but disabled.  I guess it could be doing stuff in the background.  I guess I can try renaming the PMS package file and reboot, thus not installing it at all.  I just hope I don't lose my settings.

I too was focusing on the samba until I saw the post by Ockingshay, which sounds like my same issue.  I think it's either the new samba or the recent PMS version.

Yes, just wait for the build to hit mainstream. If you haven't already, i recommend installing the PMS updater pkg to allow easy updates.

On a side note, my programming skills are useless, but is there any way someone can combine both plex and the updater in one pkg? seems silly to have 2 icons when (if possible) it could be in the same tab for neatness.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi guys, I'm having a maddening problem!

I previously posted a similar problem but at the time I believed that the problem was related to a separate program.  so i'm now trying to fix a slightly different problem:

I have plex running on my unraid system and things are going well.  for example, all tv shows work flawlessly

Movies are my problem, and it's a weird one-  after downloading a movie with sab (also running on unraid), i can refresh my plex library so that it sees the movie, and play it fine.  so what's the problem?  a few hours later, i go to play it again and get an error message saying the file is 'unavailable' and that i should check file permissions.

When i check permissions through Putty, i can see that the movie file is showing permissions such as:

-rw------- 1 nobody users 7038598033 2013-02-21 13:37 veto-theterminators-1080p.mkv

I THINK this means that basically no one can have read access except 'nobody'?  i'm trying to understand permissions.

I CAN play this file from my PC just fine, and plex sees it fine, but plex won't play it.

If i run fix permissions through unraid, and re run plex, it works fine again (but this takes HOURS) and i'm concerned about the wear and tear on the drives.

This NEVER happens with tv shows (i'm using sab and sickbeard, along with sickbeard post processing script, all running on unraid)

It seems like something is changing my file permissions on downloaded movies after a certain amount of time.  i wonder if its related to my cache drive- in other words plex sees it on the cache drive, and plays it fine, but after the mover script runs, permissions are changed somehow?

Can someone point me in the right direction to resolve?

EDIT:  just noticed that sab is running as user: nobody.  should i try to change this to root, or other?

hi Grither

look in SAB config/folders

look what permission you have set there

mine is set to

sabfolderperm.jpg

and i have never issues

Hmmm thanks. That field was blank for me. My sab downloads have worked with everything else including plex (at first until they stop working)

Will change to 2770 and test. Thanks for the suggestion

Ps how did you determine thst value?

update:  tried your suggestion, and seems to be working!  i'll keep an eye on things though... part of my problem is that when i initially download, it works, and then hours later the permissions seem to have changed, and it stops working

will keep monitoring

Hey guys,

I'm a massive noob here but I recently got myself a server and have been fiddling with unRaid. Currently it has 6gb ecc ram and a 3tb drive. Nothing else.

I'm having a few problems with plex though. I can set it up fine and stream things to my ps3/phone but whenever I restart my server my library disappears and I have to re-enter all the options. I have read this is because my library is being stored on my ram and I should change this to be on my main drive.

This is where I get stuck though. I'm not sure exactly how to change the location og my plex library. I tried to change the settings.ini file in my boot drive but then the server stops running. Also Ive tried changing the library location from the unraid menu but this section seems to be uneditable which is why I'm rather lost here.

A point in the right direction would be appreciated, thanks.

you need to disable plex before you can change the location..

Just had PMS hang for a bit so I stopped and started it via the SimpleFeatures plugin. Noticed this in my log:

Is this normal? I know most of the other plugins run as nobody and I've been using PMS for a few weeks now, so it seems strange that this would change now.

If not, what should I do to fix it?

Thanks!!

In addition to what I mentioned above, I'm having trouble playing videos on my Roku (seems to hang during transcode) and I'd like to update to the latest plexpass PMS. But the plugin doesn't seem to be getting the latest plexpass release (I did enter my info). Shouldn't it be installing 9.7.14 if I've entered my plexpass info?

Read and follow these instructions:

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/42513-0963-for-unraid/

Download latest Plex from here:

http://www.plexapp.com/getplex/

There is a txz file linked especially for unRaid under the NAS button.

***don't delete your old txz file until you uninstall old version.

For my setup I have Plex installed to /mnt/disk1/plexdata

Or something to that effect. But you specify that in the gui after doing the txz install through the shell.

Thanks kderlee.

I installed via benni-chan's plexupdater plugin. I take it that's not the best method anymore? It seemed nice because I could update PMS via SimpleFeatures.

I Should follow the instructions at the link you provided for updating and then delete the plexupdater.plg right? Are settings maintained through the update?

Thanks again.

Yes, don't delete your settings folder, and when applying the new Plex, point it at the old settings folder. It wouldn't hurt to copy the contents of your settings folder somewhere else just in case.

Yes the simple features is nice, but not the most current when it comes to Plex. You said you wanted the most current, not unlike myself, so this is my solution.

I would like to know the reasoning behind why not to use the updater? I use it just fine. I stop PMS, then run the updater and it retains all my data.

Just curious.

The updater doesn't seem to grab the latest build of PMS even though I have given it my plexpass credentials. I'm having trouble with playback on my Roku and I'm hoping that updating to the latest PMS will solve it.

I'd actually prefer to stick with the updater, but I have even stronger preference for a working Roku...

Updater found the update for me:

It's not your plexPass credentials but the username and password used in the forum post

Hmm, now everyone knows the username/password to the exclusive plexpass releases area...
