  • ok, never thought of that (yet)   noted, and yes, no deal breaker ... just have to think about how to tag either Docker or VM ... will leave a note here.   thanks for the feedback

  • Yes , only unbinding than reboot makes the gpu free than I attach it to VM and than it works for VM only and cannot be used for docker containers . To make it work for docker container i have to bind

ok ;)

now to explain (and in this only works since the latest major update), your usecase is actually to use a "external" pool device (puffer) which is not in the Standard Share integrated, so non Standard usage.

/mnt/user/Daten/ serves only data from /cache (cache pool device/s) && /user0 (array disk/s)

you mount /data <> /mnt/user/DATEN in Plex, so your "Puffer" device is not in scope for Plex, never was and cant be working like this, well, it works when i switch "live" as long as you dont stop, restarting a stream ... thats what you experience now, Plex starts "new" reading from /mnt/user/DATEN/ which only handles Cache and Array but NOT Puffer (sep. pool)

i hope so far so clear ;)

now, your usecase to use a sep. pool device as caching device, needs some modifications ...
but possible now since version 20250127

you should 1st read the 3rd recommended post, there its explained what the requirements are to use it like this.

basically for regular mode only (which you are using now)

1/ install mergerfs plugin

2/ create a new Share inside mergerfs including your Puffer as 1st and user0 as behind devices >> described

3/ WARNING change Plex to use this Share instead /mnt/user/DATEN/ WARNING >> read docs

then you have the benefit that this plugin will use your Puffer device && Plex can make use of it ... after a restart stream.

otherwise there is no way as Plex cannot see your Puffer device ... works only as long as your playback runs now.

Thank you alturismo for the possible solution using mergerfs. Seems not to be the simple and fast way, Maybe one day I will have a try.

Switched back the chache mover plugin to "cache" and it workd well.

I will go for a cache pool with the two nvme's to increase/combine them.

im considering another approach to get a "sep pools" working without using another plugin with virtual Share/s.

Idea for now

requirements, Plex setup direct access single devices like this samples

/mnt/disks/whatever_ssd/media/
/mnt/user0/media

or (even better and more common)

/mnt/disks/whatever_ssd/media/
/mnt/disk1/media
/mnt/disk2/media
...

as there are many users using this layout anyway for a better "keep" spindown behaviour on refreshing plex ...

Idea now, abusing the ignore functions in mediaservers ...

so when we have a cached file in scope of mediaservers, after switch, scan (2x now in mediaservers), place a ignore, rescan (now we have only the cached version left), so now mediaservers will only use the cached version.

once the plugin cleaner job runs, all vice vers to get the "disk" version back in scope and keeping watchstate ...

hurdles

- wiping manually from cache, pool, ... shell the plugin look for ignores and free them again ... ?

- file mode single episode on Shows ... would ignore the complete season, show, ... depending on layout.

- not properly setup ... may ignoring complete sections ;)

- .. may more

this is just an idea as mediaservers behave different using 2 copy's in scope

plex - 2 files in 1 Media (but ordering is 1st in ... so disk version will stay until i rescan rescan rescan ...)

emby/jelly - 2 files, 2 media ... lottery which is taken ;)

thats why i would have to use ignore to get them out of scope ... but ...

just an idea as different approach to mergerfs usage.

Cache mover works great for me 95% of the time, absolutely love it Alturismo. I've noticed lately that the below is coming up more and more often in the logs and not moving the media file that's playing. Haven't changed any settings and I could play something else and it could work perfectly, any suggestions?

Well, this means the played files are on your cache pool drive, even only there ... so nothing to-do ... or ?

No the files are only on the array and not on the cache

Also it seems that the reports from Plex or Cache Mover don't like special characters

yep, thats true and known, i have a complete fix already for regular mode, but currently not (yet) for mediaserver mode

this is also mentioned on page 1 that special characters can break ... function ;) sorry to say ...

then we can quit for now here, i may looking further therefore but will release the regular mode fix sooner.

i hope i finally solved that special characters point .... you may can give a try with "only" mode on mediaserver ...

Test Scene was

Feb 16 18:16:39 AlsServerII root: cache-mover: msm: CHECK: /mnt/cache/Media/RECORD/TVRIPS/F1 ᴸᶦᵛᵉ/Season { [ ] } +- 0 äöÜ/F1 ᴸᶦᵛᵉ - E1382 - GP Katar_ Sprint -+ [] {} äöÜ.mkv

and finally it does work (also in Mediaserver "only" mode) at least here ;)

in terms someone testing it, please let me know if we are done now.

i still recommend to consider folder / file naming layouts including [] {} ... ;)

The Cache Mover plugin is reliably triggering a segfault in the `shfs` process for me when it tries to switch an open file from array to cache (which obviously takes out the entire array and requires a dirty shutdown).

I had it configured in 'regular' mode,  and cache copy mode set to `file`. I'm guessing the issue is probably linked to this - the error in the log mentioned something like `"-" is not a valid path`. Sadly didn't think to save the log before I rebooted each time - and I'm not going to test this any further as the forced reboots are too much of a ballache.

I updated my settings to add the plex media server info, previously didn't and i didn't have many issues without it.

Since adding them if I try multi nothing happens within the log, only mode it updates the time without moving anything and regular mode gives the previous file changed issue

@Eoini1kenobi I been having the exact same issues. When Cache Mover released, it worked without any media server details. I use Jellyfin. My media subfolders are named "movies" and "tv" just like yours. I have tried "only", "multi" and empty modes to no avail. I get the same errors.

ok, totally understand and sorry therefore.

if you ever want to try it again and may debug the issue, there are 2 ways (and may check the logs for infos)

1/ use "close" mode instead switch mode, this wont go deep in the processes and wont "stall" shfs in terms ...

2/ pm me, i can show you the way out in terms this happans without a reboot, but needs some terminal ...

sorry and thanks for the notes, logs would been nice to see why this may occurs on your sys.

thanks, i look into this why its saying cache only file (which obviously is not the case), thanks for the screens.

as its msm mode it clearly fetches the correct pathes, but somehow ... i look into it and report back.

this is more FS related or Mediaserver behaviour related, usually why i added the mediaserver option as jelly, emby pretty often, plex (transcode, ...) sometimes releasing open files on disk.

5 hours ago, jleach said:

Jelly was the main reason why i added this as Jelly is pretty much pre loading its file in junks and pretty much releasing it.

may a question, wait time, if i make this "optional" like "keep empty" so we bypass this behaviour on regular mode too ... but would result in, when u short open a video from array "whyever" and that would be while cron runs, file would directly be copied ... i added this "to make sure" someone watching.

same here, i look into the mediaserver issue 1st why files are marked as cached even they are on disks.

thanks for the feedbacks, i try to reproduce it.

@Eoini1kenobi @jleach may i ask what FS you are using on pool / array devices ?

xfs, btrfs, zfs ?

@Eoini1kenobi and btw, your file names has brackets which was a known issue, and it looks like you didnt update the plugin yet, i pushed yesterday a update therefore ... may test Mediaserver mode with the current version before we try to debug further.

I'm using xfs. I'll update tomorrow and test, apologies I missed that update! Regarding the special characters, I saw that during the initial setup however with like 95% of my files that typically follow a similar pattern it works perfectly. Even now I could open another file that follows the same or at least a very similar naming structure and it would probably work perfectly, I'll try get logs with it working/not working tomorrow. Would it be worthwhile to change the file name to remove the brackets and any other characters to see if it works?

i hope i finally solved that special characters point .... you may can give a try with "only" mode on mediaserver ...

i hope not (anymore) ;)

before it was mandatory ...

my test scene had many extra chars included and now worked fine yesterday after some modifications.

/mnt/cache/Media/RECORD/TVRIPS/F1 ᴸᶦᵛᵉ/Season { [ ] } +- 0 äöÜ/F1 ᴸᶦᵛᵉ - E1382 - GP Katar_ Sprint -+ [] {} äöÜ.mkv

but i still say, its a bad file scheme ... most common from ARR apps

i still recommend to consider folder / file naming layouts including [] {} ... ;)

but thats my personal opinion ;)
