I need a remote access solution, to my home network....any recommendations?

Featured Replies

Ok,

Mostly on the weekdays, i work in a different city, and all my systems (unRAID...etc.) is there.  In the weekends, I'm not available there, and back to my home city...

Sometimes I would like to remotely access my network there, and check the status of downloads, or apply some settings...

What is a good, best remote solution?

I tried a while back, Go To MyPC, but It was kind of slow.

www.logmein.com, pretty good. Works in a browser, so no need for setting up ports etc. So you can use remote access over the internet with this to a pc at home, and on that pc you could telnet or browse to your unraid server etc.

VPN to your router?

if your router does not support vpn...

since you are running ESXi, you could toss WHS2011 on the server and use that to log into. you could then have access to files and remote desktops of your windows boxes.

Microsoft supplies you with SSL/TLS encryption and dynamic DNS via godaddy.

I would use a very complex password though to stop brute force, it not 100% foolproof nore is it 100% perfect, but is pretty secure way to do it.

I'll give logmein a try before subscribing....it not good enough, I might look into Johnm's recommendation...

Logmein is the way to go. I use their "free" service which is just a plain remote connection and it works perfectly all the time. Many options for video and very configurable. I've tried just about every remote type software that is out there and Logmein has to be one of the best I have ever used. Listen, you don't need to install an entire server to get remote access. That's way overkill if you ask me.

Logmein runs through your web browser but you also can run it through it's own program call Ignition. No browser needed. I use Ignition right off of a thumb drive, so whatever computer I am using just plug in the thumb drive and then I have access to all my remote computers I need to log into. Very nice. I don't need to install Ignition all the time.

+1 for Logmein free. I has served me well for years.

quick question about logmein free,

Is the logmein free speed capped?

I have 100Mb at my desk at work and 50Mb at home.

The last time I tried logmein free, I could not transfer faster then a few Mb/s

I using a Cisco ASA 5505 at home for a VPN, I get 45ish Mb/s file transfer.

Ok, you are confusing a couple of things. When people say remote access to a computer they are speaking about seeing that desktop on their computer screen and operating that computer as it was in front of them. Right now you are talking about transfer speeds with files. That is more of an FTP type thing and nothing to do with remote access. I would not doubt that Logmein has special caps and/or tolerances for straight pumping files across their network. That's why there is FTP and other means to transfer files. If you just need to transfer files then you don't even need remote desktop access. Just look into setting up an FTP server or something. There are plenty of free ones and all you need to do is a little port forwarding. The Logmein full pay service does have file transfer capabilities but from what I have experienced it is much slower then traditional FTP speeds.

I have been able to use an old router to do this, I installed dd-wrt on it and set it up to do vpn pptp.

The whole action took supriseingly little effort and I now have full access to my home network.

I have my iphone setup with:

Qouch: for sabnzb, sickbeard, couchpotato

Transmission remote for my torrents

Genie timeline app to monitor genie timeline which backups my pc at home

Telnet lite to telnet into unraid when I need to.

Airvideo and oplayer to use my media

Istat and ipmi light to monitor the hardware side of my server

Filebrowser to view my shares

And ofcourse the unraid webpages with simplefeatures.

All of this works within my home network and therefor also when I vpn into it from any location.

The whole router setup took me an hour to setup and start using. Dd-wrt also significantly improved my indoor wifi reception as a bonus !

I have a couple DDWRT routers set up. Would it be possible to share the link or references you used to get this running?

Thanks, regardless!

Another vote for logmein here. I use it to get to my work computers from home to check schedule and lab results, and to get to my home computer from work, to manage stuff there. I just use the free version.

I use SSH to my router and tunnels to access my computers beyond the router.  I'm using public/private key files that are password protected to authenticate SSH connections.  If anyone wants to hack it they'll need my keyfile that I control, and the password for the key file.  It works pretty well for accessing anything that only needs a couple ports open (VNC, access to web servers, etc).

Thanks, really appreciate it. Don't know how I missed that. I love having projects that make things easier!

PS: I'm currently just using Remote Desktop to get to my computer outside of the network. I changed the port and open or closed, depending on when I'm using it, as with DD-WRT you can access your router remotely through the web.

So logmein vs VPN.  What about logmein Himachi VPN?

I'm guessing that everyone is just using the logmein remote control from one windows computer to another.

As far as I am concerned I do not think both are equal...

You would use logmein if you want to access one box within your network (and then ofcourse, you could set that box up as a steppingstone to everything else).

Personally I like the concept of having dd-wrt dedicated for that job.. As far as everything is concerned as soon as I vpn I am part of my home network..

I do not want to have my windows box on all the time, I have unraid for that. And since there is no easy way to use the unraid box itself as a vpn endpoint I need some low power alternative to take over the role.. DD-WRT does that for me.

I prefer the VPN method.  I have DDWRT set up on my router and once i connect and establish the VPN it is like I am sitting in my own living room connected to my wireless router.

I couldn't agree with you more; I think that this is probably the best way to have things set up. With this my last project is a (secure) guest network with the lowest of priorities. I already have my network setup internally to let my wife's devices win the bandwidth war :). Now I just need to set it up to let other people get on (with a password, of course... just not *my* password) and still use the priority I have going.

I'm currently using the free Hamachi mesh VPN from logmein given how easy it was to setup on four different OSs and without having to make an account on their site.  But, when I get a new router I will be moving to DDWRT VPN.

The free version looks to be on the way out given they have reduced the number of machine on a single VPN to 5 and how hard they have made it to find information on the free mesh version. Another draw back is that it is slow, didn't matter that much when my home connection was slow, but with a faster connection it is now noticeable.

Hamachi in gateway mode works great, however I couldn't get it to reliably work on unRAID.  It was doing something wonky with the virtual network adapter.  In the end, I ended up creating a Win XP VM in my ESXi setup solely for Hamachi (couldn't get it to work on Windows 7 either... so strange).  The issues I experienced were only in gateway mode, but that allows access to your entire home network without installing Hamachi on every machine.

This DD-WRT for your router, can this be used along side another router? Right now I use a Dlink 655 router and have had nothing but GREAT luck with it and speed. It has been a flawless router and will not give it up until it dies. How would I add the ability to setup a VPN tunnel to my home network? I do have a couple old Linksys routers....

If you check out the forum link I copied in a few posts before you will see that that was just what I did.. I have left my provider access router in place and have linked the DD-WRT behind that. Only thing that needs to be configured on the router on WAN side is VPN passthru (and most of the time that is allready on.

I also did not want to mess with my access-router, so same situation as you, it really works great.. I also made the switch and am now using the DD-WRT router as my home wifi access point (dd-wrt can be tweaked in a lot of ways and I have significantly increased my inhouse wifi coverage as a bonus to the pptp..

Since I already have converted my providers router to modem only and have my own DD-Wrt router perhaps I just need to enable it, or flash the correct open-vpn build for my e3000 linksys.

Was your network done like this?

Internet -> Providers Access Router -> DD-Wrt VPN Router -> Home network?

or this?

Internet -> Providers Access Router -> DD-Wrt VPN Router -> unRaid box

                                                          -> Home Network

Unraid is still on the internet router, but that is because I have been lazy in moving it, it needs to be on the intranet router (ddwrt).

Setting up pptp on ddwrt is ridiculously easy, just do it !
