Are you using the GPU passthrough method ?

yes, of course, hardware acceleration is important in macos, as said without a gpu passthrough (only vnc) you will not get any acceleration.

Edited by ghost82

Have you ever had the bug that I encountered? I either have a black screen through GPU or while using VNC I get a glitched display.

No, because my gpu is natively supported, it's kepler. Your gpu is not supported, macos has no builtin drivers and you cannot install nvidia drivers for your gpu in mojave+, that's why you have blackscreen.

About glitches with vnc I think that it's because there's no hardware acceleration, if you check in the about macos menu you will find that your system is running a basic video card without video acceleration.

Btw what do you mean by "glitched"? Did you check your vm xml for the correct paths to ovmf files?

Edited by ghost82

Yes I did and by glitched I have like 5 smalls stretched displays showing up on the VNC page

Like these?

Check:

Yes I have that

For everyone wondering about Nvidia GPU that are still supported (natively / no drivers needed) in MacOS High Sierra, Mojave and Catalina:

Nvidia Kepler Cards that are Natively Supported: (GT 630 through GTX 690 may have issues)
GTX Titan (GK110)
GTX Titan Black (GK110)
GTX Titan Z
GTX 780/Ti
GTX 770
GTX 760/Ti
GT 740
GT 730
GT 720
GT 710 (DDR3 versions)
GTX 690
GTX 680
GTX 670
GTX 660/Ti
GTX 650/Ti
GTX 645 (GT 645 is Fermi)
GT 640 (Kepler edition, GK107/208 core)
GT 630 (Kepler edition, GK208 core)
Quadro 410
Quadro K420
Quadro K600
Quadro K2000/D
Quadro K4000/D
Quadro K4200
Quadro K5000
Quadro K5200
Quadro K6000
Quadro NVS510

I recently bought a used Nvidia Quadro K4200 and tested on Mojave and Catalina. Card worked flawlessly in passthrough mode (still does in Catalina).

I've had Radeon RX580 before but for some reason I've had problems with it in Windows, Ubuntu, Mojave and Catalina with random resets (of both server and the card). With K4200 no problems whatsoever, working like a charm in all OS's named above. Just wanted to share this with you.

I just successfully converted my Macinabox Catalina daily driver VM from Clover to Opencore, because my VM was crashing at the very beginning of  boot most of the time.

I used https://github.com/Leoyzen/KVM-Opencore. Thank you @Leoyzen! I just replaced the EFI folder with the one on this repository.

Then I used the guide https://khronokernel-2.gitbook.io/opencore-vanilla-desktop-guide/post-install/post-install/iservices to get iMessage working.

The last snag I ran into was after following that guide to the "T" my VM would no longer connect to the network. That was fixed temporarily by using vmxnet3 for a virtual Ethernet NIC.

The boot problem is exactly the same under Opencore. I've read that under Opencore you no longer have to use a patched OVMF, but I'm not sure how to convert that. Tried just changing

You are not pointing OVMF_VARS to stock one.

Update: attachment removed, please read here:

Wow @ghost82 thanks for posting those files. But for me it just hangs with no error in the logs.

EDIT: Actually maybe I read the release notes wrong this issue https://github.com/Leoyzen/KVM-Opencore/issues/8

says the stock one doesn't work.

Tried doing MacinaboxCatalina and see the distorted 4/12 screens (don't know the technical term for this video anomaly) during the boot of the MacOS recovery stage.  Maybe I should try High Sierra?

EDIT: Actually maybe I read the release notes wrong this issue https://github.com/Leoyzen/KVM-Opencore/issues/8

says the stock one doesn't work.

Opencore works with stock ovmf files.

Try this:

It worked for some people.

With your EFI, the chooser comes up but choosing my boot I get the error: OCSB: No suitable signature.  Security violation ..

Recovery boots fine, though.

ok, that config.plist should have SecureBootModel set to Default; you should mount the efi in unraid and change SecureBootModel to Disabled.

Thanks, that brought it right up. And with stock OVMF CODE and VARS.

Seems pretty snappy.

Audio and iServices still working, that's great.

Boot-looped a few times before it came up, though. Is that normal?

No, not normal :D

Without logs no crystal ball :P

I'm jocking, try to setup target 67 or 83 in the config.plist: it will save a log file in the root directory of the efi partition at each boot: when boot loops happen just check the relevant log to check what it's going on.

You need debug opencore and kexts to have full logs: if you're using the image I uploaded you are ok.

Ok, I've go logs.

Hmm. The logs seem to be identical(except for timestamps, etc) on successful and unsuccessful boots.

Does Opencore stop logging after control is handed over to the kernel?

Here is the log.

The last line is something to do with SMC

mmm there's nothing wrong with this log...

Apparently the restart happens after loading the os by the bootloader: how does it happen?kernel panic?

Edited by ghost82

It happens right at the point the control is handed over to the OS.  It is not a kernel panic I checked for that many times.

Hey, you helped me find the solution!
I turned off the watchdog timer in config.plist and now it just booted 9/10 times without hiccup. The one time it didn't boot was a hang with all cores on 100%

I guess my VM was just booting too slow and timing out.

Thanks for pointing me to the debug options.
