January 1, 201115 yr I can't wait but someone explain to me why it is better? I have a Mac also but I just don't understand why its better? I have my Mac mini connected with ethernet and my macbook pro is wireless both are connecting to unRaid with SMB. Will this make the connections faster?

AFP is the Apple File Protocol and is better supported by apple. AFP support should allow for backup via Time Machine to the server without having to trick Time Machine into doing it.
January 2, 201115 yr Connections should be faster. OS X has an old version of SMB with poor performance.
January 3, 201115 yr Time machine support is an important feature. It keeps me from going to QNAP :-)
January 3, 201115 yr I have two macs which are the primary two computers that will use my unraid. I am about ready to start setting up my shares, should I go ahead and do it now or wait?

Set up with 4.6 and you should be fine. when AFP support comes to 5.0b3 it will be beta and probably will need to be tweaked. Unless you feel like being on the bleeding edge and possibly running into problems I would stick with 4.6.
January 7, 201115 yr AFP has a much better performance than SMB (however I am wondering what it would be with unRAID)?
January 7, 201115 yr I'm also hoping AFP solves the iTunes gapless playback issue I get everytime I update iTunes...
January 11, 201115 yr i had the same issue with the gap less playback taking forever when my itunes library was on my unraid. Eventually I just gave up and went back to having my library on my laptop. :'(
