  1. what you mean with "losing all my data"? are you running other VMs on esxi too now? BTW, no need to move from ESXi , all new features of v6 should work with your current config too..
  2. see here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=26790.msg234667#msg234667
  3. i'm not tested this, but if i remember correctly from other threads, PLOP boot may take 5 or more minutes?
  4. not sure for power at idle, but may be this combo: X10SDV-8C-TLN4F (http://www.supermicro.nl/products/motherboard/xeon/d/x10sdv-8c-tln4f.cfm) or cheaper one X10SDV-F (http://www.supermicro.nl/products/motherboard/xeon/d/x10sdv-f.cfm) guys on other threads are very happy with this
  5. as i know, you can boot from flash with PLOP or something like that only.. and this approach is much slower than VMDK boot. as i mentioned in another thread, use unassigned disks plugin to mount VMDK and copy files after update - no need to mount it outside unRAID VM anymore
  6. Yes, you can, look at this plugin thread (http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=38635.0), you can't mount VMDKs with first releases but it's corrected now by the author. thanks again to gfjardim for this great plugin
  7. With new unassigned disk plugin update process with VMDK is much easier now update with unRAID GUI, then mount your VMDK, and copy new files over and you are done..
  8. No, i think i will wait for some time to v6 final or more with production server upgrade, not decided jet i can setup test server with x9SCM-iif, but this will happen in the middle of the next week maybe, i'm not at my lab now.. but i'm sure, you can find v6b15 install(on limetech git? ) and give it a try.. Uldis
  9. i was running unRAID v6b15 with ESXI 5.5 on X9SCM-iif for a long time without any problems, just switched my motherboard to x8DTH-6F this week and no problems with USB with this mobo too, just looked at my syslog to confirm.. if this is an ESXI problem, i'm running esxi 5.5 initial release(ESXi-5.5.0-1331820-standard), not upgraded it jet since first install.
  10. You will have to use the UEFI boot method then. Sounds like your MB like the SuperMicro X9SCM is not compatible with firmware flashing via dos boot USB stick. Before I accidentally bricked it I used a SuperMicro C2SBA+II to flash mine via the USB boot method. I have seen others post the UEFI boot method works on a X9SCM MB but I've never used it so cannot help. i have an SuperMicro X9SCM-iif and reflashed two M1015 cards via UEFI without no probs about two years ago - works like a charm
  11. This is the serial ID, the same unRAID uses to identify the disks. You can set different mount points if you want. How do you set a different mount point? look at OP on the Video
  12. i tried setup free Hyper-v on my test server to compare with esxi and i have no luck at all with them - looks like pure MS Xenserver gets to me more better result.
  13. Do you pass through your USB boot drive Steven? me not, just follow the Atlas thread and all should be fine i'm booting my unRAID from VMDK..
  14. when i was setup my esxi, i followed Atlas thread - was on version 5.1 and 5.5 now.. i think there are a very little or no changes at all
  15. If you've got an 8TB data drive, then it won't make ANY difference in your parity check speed whether you use another 8TB drive for parity, or a RAID-0 array. The RAID-0 array would help a bit with multiple simultaneous write operations to the array; but won't have ANY impact on parity check speeds. i just wanna share my own experience: since i added Raid0 as parity, my write speeds to array are now at full speed of data disk involved, so i can saturate GBit network easy - that is a huge difference compared with single hdd as parity.
  16. are you transcoding too? for me, when i set up my plex first time, transcoding accours, and plex used all available CPU cores - and when there are no CPU power available, weird things started happening like video/sound twitching and so on... look at your system with htop or top to see what happening when plex is running.. i then started use plex profiles for my video players, and problem was gone.
  17. just 2 cents from me too: - you don't need huge size vmdk - mine is 8GB only - notice that version upgrade wont work automatically via Plugins page - you will need to do additional step after every upgrade - mount your boot drive( unassigned disks plugin helps there ) and copy over bzroot/bzimage from your flash..
  18. Could you explain this in a little more detail? are you familiar with Atlas thread? there are lot of information how to work with esxi.. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=14695.msg138465#msg138465 or another thread about, with already prebuild VMDK images http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=26639.0 but you can create your own very easy.
  19. Jim, you need to pass USB for unRAID, but notice - Steven's unRAID are booting from VMDK(mine too ) - it's a more faster boot method than from USB, and you cant boot from USB directly, then you need Plop or something like that..
  20. Strange. The VMDK doesn't seem to be visible to unRAID. Can't find it via 'fstab -l' nor with the Unassigned Devices plugin. Edit: StevenD, I noticed (in this thread) you ran into the same issue not seeing the drive. How'd you overcome this? are you using this approach? http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=20392.msg234649#msg234649
  21. so, i'm trying to setup my rig, at last See bottom..
  22. thanks for sharing your choice:) this little board looks very tiny.. i'm asking your experience cos i'm on something similar situation - all works fine for me on my setup, but all 4 PCIe slots are with cards and i cant add more - currently have 2xM1015 + Dell PERC H710P + Intel 4port Gigabit network card. i'm experimenting with 10Gbit network too, may be wanna to add Brocade CNA adapter too.. have two of them already if i add one of them to my setup, then i will need pfsense VM too.. so, i'm looking for larger board with more PCIe slots. it's hard to decide where to go. may be i will stay with used older X8 Dual Xeon bord cos of price.. any other advice welcome
  23. for me, it looks like your old server #1 Mobo+CPU will work better IMHO.. ok, E3 have less cores but that means nothing when you demand on high CPU usage, plex server transcoding for example can you explain a bit in deep why you chose this new Xeon combo?
  24. Hi Jim, what a new server will be used for? except unRAID of course:) i have very similar setup as your current server #1(except with Norco 4224 case) and i'm using unRAID on it on Esxi quest.. plus other 4 VM's - two win, two linux .. and everything working like a charm
  25. Hi Zeron, How about update to v6 RC? looks like no choice to new update to every new linux kernel version..
