I understand your point as a dev. But you could formulate that as in "to be able to help or debug, I need specifics. I would be good to tell us exactly what was not working as you expected". And as a rule of thumb, remember that for most people "does not work" usually means "does not work as advertised". This plugin aims at showing us file activity. I would be 90% ready to bet that what he meant was that no file activity was showing for him in the Web UI. The tone of your reply certainly discouraged the original poster to reply, and it would most probably set quite a few others off too. I'd love for this community to avoid going the "TrueNAS" way and discourage new people to contribute

Thanks! This was the quick and easy fix for me, as I thankfully had a KVM plugged in (Sipeed really nice and cheap). Worked a treat!

If you want to use ZFS features, simply create an extra pool, outside of the main Unraid array (or no Unraid array, as it is now possible with 7.0 and later)

I think there is a misundertsanding on the premises of this. There is no "hybrid" anything. A pool in Unraid can only be an unraid pool for the main, and either ZFS or any of the BTRFS supported raid modes (raid 1, raid 0 for instance) on the other pools. Having an individual disk formatted as ZFS brings nothing there. It will not be a ZFS pool and none of the features of ZFS will be available. They are not "mini ZFS pools".

the legacy might be that your zpool was formatted with an earlier version of ZFS. Maybe an earlier Unraid version (I had ZFS on 6.12 already) or imported from TrueNAS or an y other ZFS supporting system?

yes, to this day (dec. 2024), the "Tips and Tweaks" plugin still thinks that anything which is not the main unraid array is "cache". Yet we have had support for extra pools for a while now... :(

That's a very good question. I see for instance that some of the edit features supposedly available are not (for instance, rotate is a must for me) and I haven't seen any update of this container in a while

Amen! I'm happy as it stands. I don't want to have a code based on one of those constantly updating distros! I like my peace of mind as it is. Nothing stops anyone from downloading one of those distros and customize it if they want. I'm happy with Unraid as it stands

Then configure your ZFS pools manually. I did have on my previous setup a raidz1 of several drives, one of which was not the same size (2tb larger, so 3x8TB and 1x10TB, all added as raidz1). You have to do so on the command line, using the "force" option, as otherwise, basic checks tell you you can't create the zpool If you want to mix and match drives with different sizes, you can do so on the unraid main array... So asking for something else at this stage, given that you can do what you want with a little effort, is asking "too much". It is in no way "reasonable". When and if ZFS supports mixed sized drives, I'm sure we'll get that built-in too.

Hi, Welcome to Unraid! Regarding the "many disk errors", you might want to check what's going on BEFORE you do any type of migration to a new system. If there are actual issues with one of your disks, no amount of changing the host NAS OS will clear that. You might want to double-check your SATA cables, as old cables are known to cause "recurring" issues on otherwise good drives. don't rely on software to compensate for bad hardware that said, your ZFS pools can be imported on Unraid. But you might want to have this one as a sseparate pool. You can't do the "and expand" part you were referring to. ZFS arrays can't be expanded yet. I know it's work in progress, but not available yet on Unraid afaik. I'd recommend you keep a "performance" ZFS pool for the VMs and other performance applications and move your movies and other media to the main Unraid array (using your new drives with parity then I guess). As for case space regarding storage, browse the forums here, you'll find plenty of examples. Also, do not underestimate how much easier it could be to replace several "small" drives (like your 6x2TB) drives with much less larger drives. Less drives means less space required in the case. Many here like the Fractal Design cases. Still fairly affordable for a high number of drives (I have right now 17 drives in my Fractal Design R5 server). I chose that over a rack or other "semi-pro" options. As much as I would like the hardware, this is still a home server and I am fine stopping the server and switching it off to replace a drive if need be.

After leaving my Calibre docker off for a long while, I tried to start it and add a new book, but I was getting constant and immediate "Server Error". No logs (log didn't have time to even start). Not sure what happened there. After reading a bit here, decided to try changing the network from Bridge to Host and bing... eveyrthing working again. On Unraid 6.12.10 (and probably the last time I ran Calibre before was still with Unraid 6.11). I typically only run Calibre Web as I prefer this UI to browse my library, but adding books, converting, etc. is still only withg the main Calibre docker

and is your server on a UPS? or connected straught to an outlet? It is not unheard of to have voltage variations at either peak or low usage times on some lines. A variation in power could trigger a failsafe in your power supply, then trying to "protect" the PC by shutting it down

Hey, On the (I suspect we're both talking about nvme) SSD size, they now go up to 8TB Larger exists, but in professional products. HDs are out of the question if you travel frequently. It's not a matter of if, but when they will inevitably fail [Murphy's law dictates it will be at he worst possible moment of course] As for X-Rays in airports, they are often accompanied by other imaging systems than pure x-rays and yes, it can potentially flip bits on SSD. Also consider that SSDs need to be powered up once in a while. If you keep them unpowered for a long time, data *will* degrade. It would help it you would share what you want to do with it. I still have the impression some info is missing. Why the need for a lot of storage while on the go? Whjy does it needs to be fast? (if not, remote access to at-home NAS is really best and safest)

Very much agreed. Nextcloud is nice and simple to use.... that is while it decides to work. All it takes is one docker update and you're playing Russian roulette with your data. I am not counting the number of times that Nextcloud failed updates messed up the setup and I had to either spends days troubleshooting, or reinstall. Since I moved away from Nextcloud, Im a happy camper with FileBrowser. Does excatly what I want and has never failed me yet.

For me, it doesn't make any sense to have a "mobile NAS". SSDs could easily ghet data corruptions while going to checkpoint controls... and hard drive would most certainly fail miserably after a few airport trips too. They are NOT meant to be transported all around. Also, how would you get port redirection for any services or dockers in hotels? If it's just mobile storage, a single USB SSD will be plenty enough for your needs. For the NAS route, dind a friend with a nice connection and offer to pay the electricity usage of it, then you're set wherever you are

The built-in AMD grqaphics are definitely not that great when transcoding 4k. 1080p should be fine though. As you have the hardware already, I suggest you simply test unraid and see how this fares for your transcoding needs. Note that Plex doesn't offer transcoding in its free version, you need either a paid plan (subscription) or the "unlimited" version which costs way more than it's worth.

Hi all, I have been experiencing some (what looked like) "random" file deletion in a share. Basically, I have a "downloads" share where several dockers leave their download files (whether torrents or otherwise). Had no problem whatsoever before 6.12. This was on a separate cache pool having a unique cache drive. I was moving files manually when and if required. Since 6.12.14 (and now .16), I have been having issues with files mysteriously disappearing from that folder. Whenever they were torrent dowload results, I still had a ".fuse_xxxxx" file leftover as the file was still being "in use". The "new" download share is not on 1 drive, but on its own separate cache pool of 3 zfs drives (3x1TB nvme as raidz1). that pool was set with Cache as main storage and array as secondary... I was foolishly thinking it wass good as things would thenm silently get transfered to the array on a regular basis. It turns out that the mover process, when running, does NOT transfer to the array. It simply DELETES the files. So (to me),, it seems thast there is a bug either in the mover process, or in the way ZFS pools are handled. Could it be they are not considered as "disks" instead of "shares" and we are hitting the old do_not_copy_from_share_to_disk bug? (or something to that effect, I recall there was a situation that could result in data loss). In any case, if I disable the second storage media and leave "cache" on its own without storing on the array, files deletion stops. Anyone could confirm and/or help so we can narrow down the issue for sure and get that fixed? I am sure that under no circumstances the mover should be in a position to lose data, regardless of the choices of the end user

If it's mostly for you only, you might even consider something that doesn't really need transcoding then, if you are happy top download to your device what you would be playing (phone I suppose?). If you got a decent enough upload bandwidth, maybe just VPN in and then enjoy your content the same as you would on your LAN. That means that any setup would do. And what you chose on PartsPicker is way overkill for any of that. One last word on the drives: 12TB @ $219 seems a bit high. You would be able to get less drives at a better ratio. Like the current Seagate Exos 18TB, very often around that same price or barely $10 or $20 more. Plus, they have a 5 years warranty (WD Red Plus only 3 iirc)

One of the most important points here will be: who will be accessing your media content (only you, or friends and fanilly), over which system (Internet, LAN only, etc.) and using which devices (tablets, phones, smart TVs, etc.) Because if you have many people accessing content remotely on not-so-great devices (phones or old tablets for ex.), you might require transcoding. And it doesn't come for free for Embby. Only premium users (so with paid subscription) will have that. If you want 100% free, you need to consider Jellyfin. If you want easy, Plex (here again, transcoding doesn't come for free). Getting the content is the easy part. Making sure others can easily access it (Plex app on their TV? Something else? Does the TV has a "private" appstore that doesn't have an Embyy client?) is quite another. So think about the whole setup and sofwtare side. The hardware part is the easy one to solve.

Nice set of photos and nice build. If I may add... if you place your NVME controller in the first PCIe slot, you would have enough space wuth a custom bracket to hold 1 for sure, maybe 2 extra drives there

Hi, and welcome to the rabbit hole of building your own system! Yes, that workstation would be an excellent starter system. You can easily add more drives down the line at no to low extra cost. Same for extra DRAM. Power usage should be fairly modest too. 2 warnings though: • Dell PCs are typically not "standard" (in that line, using BTX motherboard and same for proprietary PSU). That means that geting more power to more items will have to go through adaptors, and if anything wrong happens to the motherboards, you cvan't just "buy a new one" • When and if you want to "upgrade" anything else than RAM and drives, that will mean at the very least purchasing a new case+a new motherboard + a new PSU But again, if you got a good deal on that bundle, that's a good starter system

Hi all, I know it's an "old" thread, but in 2023 in the UK, the kW is getting really expensive (£ 0.28 for me, and that's one of the "lowest" prices. It recently went above £0.58 for a period). I really need not only several power plug, ut a way to monitor them to actually make the appropriate changes (or not) in my equipment (so not just unraid) Any input and/or help from those having something in place would be great

Adding the drivers did it for me on a fairly modest USB-C to 2.5GB/s adapter (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0CCCWJ9MQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Installed the Realtek USB drivers, rebooted the server, then went into the Network settings and switched my eth0 for the new adapter and left the "old" gibabit internal one for eth1. One more reboot and everything works like a charm! Pretty nice upgrade for £27 and using a port rarely useful for a headless server anyway (and saving some PCIe lanes that way too)
